Divine Mercy Sunday Today’s Readings First Reading: All who believed were devoted to the teachings of the apostles, the communal life, the breaking of the bread, and prayer (Acts 2). Psalm: Give thanks to the Lord for he is good, his love is everlasting (Psalm 118). Second Reading: God has given us an undiminished inheritance, safeguarded for us in heaven (1 Peter 1). Gospel: The risen Christ comes to his disciples with peace and the Spirit. The absent Thomas doubts (John 20). Readings for the Week Monday: Acts 4:23-31; Ps 2:1-9; Jn 3:1-8 Tuesday: Acts 4:32-37; Ps 93:1-2, 5; Jn 3:7b-15 Wednesday: Acts 5:17-26; Ps 34:2-9; Jn 3:16-21 Thursday: Acts 5:27-33; Ps 34:2, 9, 17-20; Jn 3:31-36 Friday: Acts 5:34-42; Ps 27:1, 4, 13-14; Jn 6:1-15 Saturday: 1 Pt 5:5b-14; Ps 89:2-3, 6-7, 16-17; Mk 16:15-20 Sunday: Acts 2:14, 22-33; Ps 16:1-2, 5, 7-11; 1 Pt 1:17-21; Lk 24:13-35 Saints and Special Observances Sunday: Second Sunday of Easter (or Sunday of Divine Mercy) Tuesday: St. Anselm Thursday: St. George; St. Adalbert Friday: St. Fidelis of Sigmaringen Saturday: St. Mark Scripture Reflection Those of us who flatter ourselves that we have a “realistic” view of the world may listen to the first reading today and say, “Get real!” when we hear Luke’s account of the early, Elysian days of the Christian movement. All seems to be rosy, lots of wonders are performed, everyone shares selflessly, they eat together in “exultation,” and the Lord added to their numbers? Well, who wouldn’t be attracted to a group like this? From the wind that swept through the upper room at Pentecost as the Spirit of God blew over the face of the waters in Genesis, and the fire that appeared over each disciple as the light appeared at the dawn of creation, Luke’s intent in Acts is to show a new creation, a restoration of creation’s original goodness through the working of the Holy Spirit. It is the Spirit who continues to make us into the Body of Christ. We may occasionally, like Thomas in the Gospel, say, “Get real!” but our ultimate reality in the Spirit is to work continually to make our Christian community a new creation, one in which others will find God’s joy and beauty. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Archdiocesan Family Prayer Loving and faithful God, through the years the people of our archdiocese have appreciated the prayers and love of Our Lady of Prompt Succor in times of war, disaster, epidemic and illness. We come to you, Father, with Mary our Mother, and ask you to help us in the battle of today against violence, murder and racism. We implore you to give us your wisdom that we may build a community founded on the values of Jesus, which gives respect to the life and dignity of all people. Bless parents that they may form their children in faith. Bless and protect our youth that they may be peacemakers of our time. Give consolation to those who have lost loved ones through violence. Hear our prayer and give us the perseverance to be a voice for life and human dignity in our community. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Our Lady of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us. Mother Henriette Delille, pray for us that we may be a holy family. Amen. St. Catherine of Siena Parish Prayer God, Our Father, we thank you for our parish community of St. Catherine of Siena. Thank you for the many blessings that you have given us, but especially for calling us to serve as disciples of your son, Jesus Christ. As we gather today, we ask that you send your Holy Spirit to guide us in everything that we do. Transform our hearts and lead us closer to you. Help us always to seek to be a parish that is Centered on Christ and Ablaze with Love. We ask all of these things in the name of Jesus, and through the intercession of our Blessed Mother. St. Catherine of Siena, pray for us! St. Michael the Archangel Prayer St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Since you are unable to receive Jesus in the Eucharist during Mass, we will bring Jesus to you. On Divine Mercy Sunday, April 19, Fr. Tim will be processing through streets in the portion of the parish that is south of Metairie Road, with Jesus in the monstrance, and blessing anyone who is outside their house on the front lawn. We did a procession on Palm Sunday through the streets in the parish north of Metairie Road. We planned to do another procession on Easter Sunday but postponed it due to rain and wind that were forecasted. As the procession passes your home, you are invited to kneel if you are able, and Fr. Tim will bless you with the monstrance. Please be sure to maintain

proper social distancing and do not invite people to your house for this. The route and estimated times for each portion of the procession will be posted at scschurch.com/procession by Friday, April 17. Check scschurch.com/procession on Divine Mercy Sunday for a link to real time tracking of the procession.

New Parish-Wide Emails Fr. Tim and Fr. Andrew had been working toward being able to send parish-wide emails to help ensure that everyone in the SCS community receives monthly news updates. The COVID-19 pandemic, however, freed up time such that they have been able to make parish-wide emails a reality. At this time, a weekly email is being sent to all parishioners. Once the COVID-19 pandemic is over, an email with parish highlights will be sent once a month. Please call the church office if you are not currently subscribed and would like to begin receiving the emails.

An Act of Spiritual Communion My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

Letter from Archbishop Aymond Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ: Easter 2020 will have its own unique chapter in history. Throughout Holy Week and Easter Sunday we usually gather in our churches to celebrate the Solemn Liturgies. This year is indeed different as we endure the coronavirus and are called to small group gatherings and to social distancing. Though we cannot gather in our churches, we are called to enter into prayer and walk with Jesus in his suffering, death and resurrection. These days call us to spend additional time in prayer. Choose a Gospel account and reflect on Jesus’ journey to Calvary and the tomb. In the midst of that prayer we also hear Jesus say, “If you wish to be my disciple, take up your cross and follow me.” Matt. 16:24 I have heard some ask, “Is this coronavirus God’s punishment on the world?” No, the God who loves us is not a God of revenge or condemnation, but a God who calls us to be converted to his love and mercy. God allows tragedies to call us to a greater dependence on him as the God of our lives and promises that out of this darkness he will bring hope and new life. Many in our community are suffering physically and emotionally. We ask God’s healing for the ill and eternal rest for those who have died from the virus. There is anxiety as we wonder about the future, our employment, finances, school, basic security and care for our families. In the midst of all these questions, Jesus says, “It is I, … do not be afraid … peace be with you”, as he said to the disciples after his resurrection. We must open our hearts and see him, standing outside the tomb offering to bring light into our darkness. Please remember health care professionals and all who serve us at this time. May our church bells ringing at 6:00 p.m. daily be a sign of our prayer for those who risk their lives for us. A special word of thanks to our clergy who have provided opportunities for us to grow spiritually. To more than 300 people who were to enter the Church at Easter, through Baptism or Profession of Faith, we eagerly look forward to welcoming you into our family of faith in the near future. May the peace of the Risen Christ bring light into any darkness you experience and hope in this time of uncertainty. Wishing you the blessings of the Risen Christ and a remembrance at Easter Mass, I am Faithfully in Christ, Most Reverend Gregory M. Aymond Archbishop of New Orleans
