Teaching the Spirit of Mission Ad Gentes: Continuing Pentecost Today

Statement of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops

The Great Call of Apostleship In his last words to the apostles, the Lord Jesus Christ gave them a mission: “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you” (Mt 28:19-20).

“Jesus Christ—the Word made flesh and Son of the Father—has an absolutely unique role in the salvation of the world. Similarly, the [Catholic] Church . . . uniquely contains the means of continuing Christ’s saving mission” (Bishop Joseph Fiorenza, Statement on Dominus Iesus, 2000).

Christ’s instruction to the apostles was a great call to those who became the first bishops and the first missionaries of the Church. They were told to go ad gentes—that is, “to the nations,” to those who did not know Christ—and to proclaim the Gospel. Because the apostles were faithful and obedient to Christ’s command, his Church has grown and flourished.

The responsibility for fulfilling that mandate passes on unchanged to the bishops and to all the Catholics of today. The word “catholic”—that is, “universal”—embodies God’s purpose for his Church. He wants to extend it to the farthest corners of the earth. He wants to show all people his love and mercy.

Missions are those “particular undertakings by which the heralds of the Gospel, sent out by the Church and going forth into the whole world, carry out the task of preaching the Gospel and planting the Church among peoples or groups who do not yet believe in Christ. . . . The proper purpose of this missionary activity is evangelization” (Ad Gentes, no. 6).

However, this mission is far from complete. There are many young churches that need missionaries to develop and grow. There are many dioceses, eparchies, and countries struggling with poverty, persecution, oppression, war, and im-mense suffering that need missionaries to witness to the light and love of Christ, bringing hope for the future.

The Church can never “withdraw from her permanent mission of bringing the Gospel to the multitudes—the millions and millions of men and women—who as yet do not know Christ the Redeemer of humanity” (On the Permanent Validity of the Church’s Missionary Mandate [Redemptoris Missio], no. 31, original italics). Therefore, all Catholics, by reason of their incorporation into the Church at Baptism, should fully partici-pate and cooperate in Christ’s ongoing mission “to the nations.”

We, the Catholic bishops of the United States, commit ourselves anew to supporting the world mission effort, and we ask all Catholics to join us in this venture. World Mission and the Teaching Ministry In order to strengthen this mission effort, we address this letter particularly to all those who fulfill the special role of teaching and forming the Catholics in our dioceses and eparchies. We are enormously grateful for the devotion and skill with which Catholics in the teaching ministry lead the way: Catechists Directors of religious education Priests, religious, and deacons Adult education directors Youth and young adult ministers Campus ministers Teachers and administrators in Catholic schools and

institutes of higher education Seminary professors and instructors Mission office directors

We encourage all Catholics to focus particular attention on all peoples of other nations who do not know Christ and his Church. In this letter, we call on everyone with teaching roles to guide the faithful towards a renewed fervor in spreading the Good News by witness and word. A Word of Encouragement In an ad limina address to a group of bishops in 2004, Pope John Paul II appealed to the Church in the United States to recapture its missionary spirit: I also wish to express my personal gratitude for the traditional generosity of the faithful of the United States to the Church’s mission ad gentes through the training and sending forth of generations of missionar- ies and through the contributions of countless Catholics to the foreign missions. I encourage you to make every effort to revive this powerful manifesta- tion of solidarity with the universal Church. History bears witness that a sustained commitment to the mission ad gentes renews the whole Church, strength ens the faith of individuals and communities, reinforces their Christian identity, and gives rise to fresh enthuse asm for overcoming the challenges and difficulties of the moment (cf. Redemptoris Missio, 2). May the Church in your country discover the sources for a profound interior renewal through a revitalization of missionary zeal, above all by promoting vocations to missionary Institutes and proposing, especially to young people, the lofty ideal of a life completely devoted to the Gospel. (Address of John Paul II to the Bishops of the Ecclesiastical Provinces of Boston and Hartford (U.S.A.) on Their Ad Limina Visit [September 2, 2004], no. 4)

Pope John Paul II thus reminded us all of something we know to be true: ad gentes mission not only strengthens mission abroad, it also increases our fervor for the faith at home.

Bishop Michael C. Barber, SJ has appointed Rodney Pierre-Antoine as the founding executive director of the new Lumen Christi Acade-mies, a network of seven elemen-tary schools with the Diocese of Oakland. Pierre-Antoine has served as a Catholic educator in the East Bay area for most of his

career, after obtaining a master’s degree in educational leadership from the University of Notre Dame in 2009 and his bachelor’s in communica-tions in 1998 from the University of Maryland. He has served in leadership positions at St. Felicitas in San Leandro and St. Jarlath in Oakland, and was director of the Notre Dame ACE Academies, a national network. He will focus on development, operational coordination, ensure an adequate level of resources, and support principal and teacher development across the seven schools. ”I am passionate about my commitment to co-creating an exceptional, Christ-centered community for stu-dents and families,” Pierre-Antoine said. Bishop barber welcomes Pierre-Antoine’s contributions, “Rodney’s deep faith and commitment to Catholic education will help us create a sustainable, thriving network so all our children can receive the very best academic and faith formation.”

Students came together this week to honor Mary with a May crowning. Sixth grade students worked together with the second graders to prepare the prayer

service. Every student and teacher laid a flower at Our Lady’s feet. It was beautiful.

Third and fourth grade students this week enjoyed a hands-on STEAM lesson taught by Ms. Green. And, our sixth, seventh and eighth graders showed off their moves at a Student Leadership Team sponsored school dance on Wednesday. —Diana Corsetti

May is the month of Mary

The seven gifts of the Holy Spirit are enumerated in Isaiah 11:2-3. They are present in their fullness in Jesus Christ but

are found in all Christians who are in a state of grace. We receive them when we are infused with sanctifying grace, the life of God within us—as, for example, when we receive a sacrament worthily. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church (para. 1831) notes, "They complete and perfect the virtues of those who receive them." Infused with His gifts, we respond to the prompt-ings of the Holy Spirit as if by instinct, the way Christ Himself would. The Gifts of the Holy Spirit are Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Fortitude, Knowledge, Piety, and Fear of the Lord.

The gift: Ask nothing of God, then, but this gift of divine Love, that is,

the Holy Spirit. —W. Hilton ICF ANNUAL FAMILY

Saints Before Us

The Liturgical Color of PENTECOST, the BIRTHDAY of the church is RED.

The different liturgical colors are drawn from creation to remind those participating

in the liturgy of the different blessings of God. RED signifies the Passion, Blood, Fire, God’s Love & Martyrdom.

Saint Celestine: When the father of this Italian saint died, his good mother brought up her twelve children well, even though they were very poor. "Oh, if I could only have the joy of seeing one of you become a saint!" she use to say. Once when she asked as usual, "which one of you is going to become a saint?" little Peter (who was to become Pope Celestine) answered with all his heart, "Me, mama! I'll become a saint!" And he did. When he

was twenty, Peter became a hermit and spent his days praying and reading the Holy Bible. If he was not praying or reading, he would copy books or do some hard work so that the devil would not find him doing nothing, and tempt him. Because other hermits kept coming to him and begging him to guide them, he started a new Order. Peter was an old monk, eighty-four years of age when he was made Pope. It came about in a very unusual way. For two years, there had been no Pope, because the Cardinals could not decide whom to choose. St. Peter sent them a message to decide quickly, for God was not pleased at the long delay. Then and there, they chose the holy old hermit himself! Poor Peter wept when he heard the news, but he sorrowfully accepted and took the name Celestine V. He was Pope only about five months. Because he was so humble and simple, everyone took advantage of him. He could not say "no" to anyone, and soon matters were in great confusion. At last, the Saint decided that he had better give up his position as Pope. He did so and then threw himself at the feet of the Cardinals for not having been capable of governing the Church. What an impression his humility made on all of them! St. Celestine hoped to live in one of his monasteries in peace. But the new Pope thought it would be safer to keep him where wicked people could not take advantage of him. The saint was put in a cell and died there. Yet he was cheerful and close to God. "You wanted a cell, Peter," he would repeat to himself, "and a cell you have." His feast day is May 19th.

Building upon Pope St. John Paul II's writings about "the feminine genius," Colleen Carroll Campbell discusses the uniqueness of the nature and vocation of women, both gifts from God. She uses the lives of several female saints to help women recognize and use their gifts to live out their faith as Christians in the modern world. Author and columnist Colleen Carroll Campbell hosts EWTN's Faith and Culture program.

Be honest: Do you think prayer is useful? While we might de-scribe the act of praying positively, we may not be convinced it actually “works”—at least not as we intend. Here’s the shock-er: Many theologians agree it’s a trap to consider prayer in terms of utility. Prayer is not an effective activity; that is, it’s not a penny in, gumball out procedure. Prayer’s not an activity at all. Rather it’s a form of relationship, an unveiling of the self before the God of love. Loving relationships, however, are very effective. Just ask the Pentecost gang what love can do. Today's readings: Day: Acts 2:1-11; 1 Corinthians 12:3b-7, 12-13 or Galatians 5:16-25; John 20:19-23 or 15:26-27; 16:12-15 (63). “And [they] began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim.”

Pope Francis recently added a memorial to celebrate the Blessed Virgin Mary in her role as “Mother of the Church” every year on the Monday after Pentecost as a way to foster Marian piety and the “maternal sense of the church.” The Mari-an title of “Mother of the Church,” was given to the Blessed Mother by Blessed Pope Paul VI at the Second Vatican Council. With its addition to the General Roman Calendar, it will now be celebrated by the whole Roman Catholic Church. Ponder how your own faith has been nurtured within the church community, and take a moment to thank Mary for serving as mother of us all. Today's readings: Gen. 3:9-15, 20 or Acts 1:12-14; John 19:25-34 (572A). “Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala.”

If you knew you would be canonized a saint and could choose your patronage now, for what cause would you cheerfully accept intercessions? Be careful in your selection: Saints be-come the patrons of causes they know all too well. Rita of Cascia is the patron saint of bad marriages, victims of spousal abuse, and loneliness, among other conditions she endured personally. There are still many who seek her help today. Support local programs that assist families in trouble. Today's readings: James 4:1-10; Mark 9:30-37 (342). “If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all."

At times biblical poetry sets theological distinctions aside. In some places in Hebrew scripture, for example, divine wisdom is feminine and spoken of in a way almost indistinguishable from God. While the church often uses the masculine term “Father” for God, that is not to say God is male but that God acts toward us as a loving father does. Scripture and tradition have other names for God as well. Of course the Supreme Being is ultimately beyond gender—and all description really—but human beings need human terms to express their experience of God, including that of “wise woman.” Today's readings: James 4:13-17; Mark 9:38-40 (343). “For whoever is not against us is for us."

What might humble table salt have to teach us about God? Surprisingly, a lot! The Catholic Encyclopedia has an entire entry devoted to salt, noting that historically it almost always has had a sacred and religious character. As a seasoning, salt gives a kick of flavor and taste to what might otherwise be a bland meal. It’s also a preservative to keep food from going bad. The gospels use the symbol of salt to refer to Christ’s new life within us, an ingredient that indeed transforms our whole lives. How can you add some more seasoning to God’s activity in your life? Today's readings: James 5:1-6; Mark 9:41-50 (344). “Keep salt in yourselves and you will have peace with one another.”

Jacqueline de Decker had gone to India to serve the poor and wanted to join Mother Teresa's newly founded Missionaries of Charity, but a spinal injury ended her dream. Or so she thought. In 1952 Mother Teresa sent Decker a letter with a proposal: “I need souls like yours to pray and suffer for the work” who could “do much more while on your bed of pain than I running on my feet.” Decker's vocation sounds a lot like that of the 16th-century Carmelite sister Saint Mary Magdalene de' Pazzi, who withstood years of physical and spiritual suffering yet had a mystical prayer life and later even rose from her “bed of pain” to become a wisdom-figure in her community. Jesus calls us all to serve. Consider your strengths not your weaknesses when answering that call. Today's readings: James 5:9-12; Mark 10:1-12 (345). “Do not complain, brothers and sisters, about one another, that you may not be judged.”

Saint Philip Neri (1515-95) must have had a good cobbler, because he sure put a lot of miles on his shoes. He sauntered through Rome, striking up conversations with whomever he met, beggars or bankers, warming hearts as he talked about God. Often, he’d bid them walk and talk with him enroute to a church or hospital. Later, after becoming a priest, he organized pilgrimages to churches in the city, inviting people to walk and pray together. As the one who brought the Forty Hours Devo-tion to Rome, Philip would like today’s practice of walking in procession as a prelude to adoring the Blessed Sacrament. Sometimes we need to wear out our soles to touch the souls of others. Today's readings: James 5:13-20; Mark 10:13-16 (346). “Let the children come to me; do not prevent them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.”

One Beatitude we routinely misinterpret is the one about being “pure of heart.” Purity of heart isn't about sex but rather about loyalty and fidelity, what we call single-heartedness. From Mo-ses to the prophets to Jesus, fidelity to God alone has been the ideal. We worship a Triune God with a solitary heart. We can’t afford to divide our loyalty or it will be no more than a farce. Houseclean your heart from competing loyalties. Today's readings: Deuteronomy 4:32-34; Romans 8:14-17; Mat-thew 28:16-20 (165). “Know, and fix in your heart, that the LORD is God . . . and that there is no other.” https://preparetheword.com/
