Fifteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time

Today’s Readings First Reading Heed the voice of the LORD. It is something very near to you, already in your hearts; you only need to carry it out (Deuteronomy 30:10-14). Psalm Turn to the Lord in your need, and you will live (Psalm 69) or Psalm 19. Second Reading All things were created through and for Christ Jesus (Colossians 1:15-20). Gospel To be a neighbor, show love by treating others with mercy, as did the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37). Readings for the Week Monday: Is 1:10-17; Ps 50:8-9, 16bc-17, 21, 23; Mt 10:34 — 11:1 Tuesday: Is 7:1-9; Ps 48:2-8; Mt 11:20-24 Wednesday: Is 10:5-7, 13b-16; Ps 94:5-10, 14-15; Mt 11:25-27 Thursday: Is 26:7-9, 12, 16-19; Ps 102:13-14ab, 15-21; Mt 11:28-30 Friday: Is 38:1-6, 21-22, 7-8; Is 38:10-12abcd, 16; Mt 12:1-8 Saturday: Mi 2:1-5; Ps 10:1-4, 7-8, 14; Mt 12:14-21 Sunday: Gen 18:1-10a; Ps 15:2-5; Col 1:24-28; Lk 10:38-42 Saints and Special Observances Sunday: Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Monday: St. Benedict Wednesday: St. Henry Thursday: St. Kateri Tekakwitha Friday: St. Bonaventure Saturday: Our Lady of Mount Carmel; Blessed Virgin Mary Scripture Reflection Miss Collins, the dean of students at Olympic High School, was past the point of scolding Matt, though she liked him very much. “Four detentions in two weeks are too many.” Still Matt wouldn’t tell. It was only after Miss Collins went on a morning neigh-borhood patrol that she found out the real reason for Matt’s tardiness. Thump, thump, thump, came the wheelchair down the stairs. It was Matt, steadying Shawnetta as he helped lower her down the stairs and then push her to the corner bus stop. “She’s a girl in my parish youth group,” Matt explained to Miss Collins. There are many ways to describe Matt’s actions—a random act of kindness, mak-ing a difference one person at a time. Jesus would understand. When the lawyer cor-rectly identified the good Samaritan as the one who had treated the injured man with compassion, Jesus said simply, “Go and do likewise” (Luke 10:37). Our Family Prayer Loving and faithful God, through the years the people of our archdiocese have appreciated the prayers and love of Our Lady of Prompt Succor in times of war, disas-ter, epidemic and illness. We come to you, Father, with Mary our Mother, and ask you to help us in the battle of today against violence, murder and racism. We implore you to give us your wisdom that we may build a community founded on the values of Jesus, which gives respect to the life and dignity of all people. Bless parents that they may form their children in faith. Bless and protect our youth that they may be peacemakers of our time. Give consolation to those who have lost loved ones through violence. Hear our prayer and give us the perseverance to be a voice for life and human dignity in our community. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Our Lady of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us. Mother Henriette Delille, pray for

Cross Catholic Outreach: July 9/10 To celebrate the JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY Father Bernard Ol-szewski of Cross Catholic Outreach commissioned by Pope Francis in Rome as a Missionary of Mercy will be visiting our parish this weekend. Father will speak at all the Masses on behalf of the poor in developing countries. What a blessed occasion to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Knights of Columbus Quarterly Communion: July 10 All are invited to pray the rosary before Mass at 8:30am. Fol-lowing 9:00 Mass, please join us in the Melancon Center for coffee, kids beverages and doughnuts! Ulster Project Car Wash: July 15 Come to the Melancon Center parking lot and have your car washed from 10:00am to 1:00pm. The cost is $10. This is an activity of the Ulster Project which is celebrating its 25th year. The Ulster Project joins teens from Northern Ireland and the United States for one month and they learn of the other’s cul-ture and community. Rosary Altar Society—Day of Reflection: July 16 The St. Catherine of Siena Rosary Altar Society is hosting a “Day of Reflection” on Saturday, July 16th in the Melancon Center located behind St. Catherine of Siena Church, 105 Bonnabel Boulevard at Metairie Road. The day will begin at 11:00am and will end with Mass at 4:00pm. Our guest speaker will be Deacon Jared Rodrigue who will tell us of the symbolism in the stained glass windows and the purpose of the various areas of the church. Deacon Jared Rodrigue was or-dained a Deacon this past May and is serving his internship at St. Catherine of Siena. We hope you are able to find the time to enjoy some fellowship with us. For more information please contact Donna Hummel at [email protected]. REMINDER: There will be no meeting in August. Tithing Distribution Each week, 5% of the weekly collection is set aside in a tithing account to help the poor and needy. Each quarter, money from that account is distributed to different charities. Recent-ly money was given to Catholic Charities, the Good Shepherd School, the Incarnate Word Sisters, and Hams for Fans (a non-profit organization that feeds families at Thanksgiving). Your weekly generosity not only helps support the mission and min-istry of St. Catherine of Siena Parish, but it also supports oth-ers in need. Thank you for your generosity.

Melancon Center Parking Lot Some trees in the Melancon Center parking lot will be removed because their roots are clogging the drain lines and preventing the parking lot from draining. After the trees are removed, the drain lines will be cleaned, allowing the parking lot to drain properly. New trees that are more appropriate for the location will be planted once the drainage has been fixed. Construction Update Work has begun on the new gym ceiling and the new walkway in the parking lot. For the entire month of July, the gym will be unavailable for use due to construction. We apologize for any inconvenience. CYO News There is no CYO in July. Registration for the 2016—17 school year begins now through August 15th! Therapeutic Family Services in Need of Fos-ter Families Catholic Charities Archdiocese of New Orleans’ Therapeutic Family Services is in need of additional foster families. Foster families provide a temporary home for children whose parents cannot care for them. TPFS matches children with moderate to severe emotional, behavioral, or developmental problems, or medically fragile children with families who provide spe-cialized foster care. Agreeing to be a foster parent means you will be working with a team of professionals who will develop a treatment plan to help reunite the family or find the child a permanent placement. TFS also trains and supports prospec-tive foster parents. Foster parents provide guidance and sup-port in a safe, stable environment. They provide for basic daily needs as well as providing transportation to appoint-ments, court hearings, and visits with the child’s family. Fos-ter families receive a stipend to help with the costs associated with taking in a child. To learn more about the requirements and process of becoming a foster parent you can visit http://www.ccano.ortg/tfs/ or contact Mamie Hall-Landry at [email protected] or 310-6939. Respect Life July Focus: Conscience Protection Our July focus is Conscience Protection. Not only are we, as a nation, celebrating our independence this month, we are also at a crossroads with respect to religious freedom and con-science protection. More and more, those who choose to pro-tect life are finding themselves on the wrong side of an em-ployer’s wishes or even the law. Please join us in this month’s spiritual work of mercy. Choose 9 days to pray the novena, Prayer for the Protection of Religious Liberty, which can be found on the Respect Life Office website: https://respectlife.arch-no.org/conscience-protection. This month our corporal work of mercy is an action that is easy and sim-ple! It only takes a moment of your time to make a huge dif-ference in the course of our nation. Please ask your parish to take this simple step. There is not much time for our voices to be heard. The USCCB is asking us to take action. The Con-science Protection Act of 2016 (HR 4828) is currently in the House Energy and Commerce Committee. Quick action by this Committee is needed to move the bill to the floor for a vote in the coming weeks; otherwise the bill may not get a vote this year. This bill will protect health care providers from being forced to pay for or participate in abortions, and allow victims of discrimination a “right of action” to defend their rights in court. Please contact Rep. Steve Scalise of the House Energy & Commerce Committee to urge action on HR4828 using this simple link from Human Life Action. https://www.humanlifeactioncenter.org/take-action?vvsrc=%2fCampaigns%2f46692%2fRespoond%3fvvcgUT%3dU2x9vkONU_QSrCPmJbleYQ%26vvcgRD%3dBb48JqqUc62MbqK%26vvsbr%3d7yD5HNibeHxJwB1h7WI98A. It is imperative that we act as soon as possible...the House is on Independence Day recess until July 5, and they will recess again on July 18.
