Salva on Changes Everything

Our readings for this Fourth Sunday of Lent make us privy to the slow development of the Chris an understanding of sal-va on. We begin with a reading from 2 Chronicles that sums up much of Old Testament salva on history: God gives the people good things, the people sin and are punished, God saves them again — and the pa ern repeats itself. That’s the Cliff ’s Notes to Old Testament teaching.

When we flesh it out a bit, we see that this historical scene presents Israel in an early phase of their religious develop-ment. We meet this people in the midst of their rebellion: They have denigrated God’s gi s and then mocked the prophets who tried to call them out. Therefore, they believe, they got what they deserved. Having turned their hearts from God, the people have had their misguided hearts’ de-sire fulfilled by their enemies, who completely removed them from the territory God had given them, the place where they thought they could always find God — even if only when necessary. But then, this God who won’t be lim-ited to their designs uses the enemy King Cyrus to save them, and they return to the land and rebuild the temple.

The people’s sense of salva on at this point is elementary. God is the author of good, but the people sin and suffer the inevitable consequences. Finally, God saves them by restor-ing them to the original good life. Everyone hopes that they have learned their lesson. Paul, who was a son of this tradi-

on, goes much further than Chronicles as he reflects on salva on. Whereas Chronicles saw salva on largely in physi-cal and geographical terms, Paul tries to help his audience understand salva on as an in mate experience of knowing the love of God and all it entails.

Paul’s shorthand descrip on of salva on is the phrase “in Christ.” Following his lead, in every Eucharis c celebra on we declare that God’s honor and glory are revealed “through him, with him and in him.” Although we may not have thought much about it, the phrase “with him” implicates us: We, too, are to par cipate in the unity of the Holy Spirit, manifes ng the glory of God in our world. That’s what Paul is saying to the Ephesians: in Christ, we are brought to life, raised beyond mortality, and share Christ’s power to over-come evil. We are not only saved, but called to con nue the work of salva on.

Paul underlines this message by saying that we are God’s handiwork. Here he uses a word for handiwork that recalls God the Creator, referring precisely to God’s ar stry, similar to that of a po er or a poet.

Paul underlines this message by saying that we are God’s handiwork. Here he uses a word for handiwork that recalls God the Creator, referring precisely to God’s ar stry, similar to that of a po er or a poet.

Paul says we are God’s work of art, graced to carry on the good works God has in mind. John’s presenta on of Jesus’ conversa on with Nicodemus deepens Paul’s theme. The proclama on begins with Jesus’ explana on of his voca on: God’s love for the world could not be fully expressed by anything less than the Incarna on. Jesus describes himself as the one sent to give flesh to God’s great love.

In spite of what anyone might say, God does not come to judge, but to offer the life that is salva on. So far, so good. Now we get to the part that some Evangelicals love to re-peat and that has always troubled my Catholic soul: Every-one who believes ... will have eternal life.” All we have to do is believe? Does that mean I’ve made it because I recite the creed? It sounds like an insurance policy I don’t know where to buy.

What is it that we are to believe? Jesus says that we are to believe in the Son of Man li ed up. There’s no doubt that he’s referring to the cross. And what is the cross but the revela on of a God loving enough to suffer death without revenge, powerful enough to overcome death? The Byzan-

ne liturgy emphasizes Christ’s victory by saying he used death to trample death, a more poe c rendi on of our acclama on: “By your cross and resurrec on, you have set us free.”

This is the mystery at the heart of Chris anity. In John’s Gospel, the cross was Jesus’ hour of glory (12:23). The mes-sage of today’s readings is that it is not his glory alone. We, too, can share in his freedom and life if only we believe.

But this belief goes beyond assen ng to a dogma. It means that we bet our lives on the belief that Christ li ed up has overcome every evil and that we have nothing, absolutely nothing, to fear. That does not mean we will never suffer, but that God’s love, stronger than even death, is available to us, no ma er what. To believe that is to know that salva-

on changes everything. This kind of faith is a grace and an act of the will. This understanding of salva on leads us to be God’s handiwork, con nuing Christ’s mission in our world.

CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES “Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me” (Mt 25:40). Today, we are reminded that Jesus iden fied himself with our poorest brothers and sisters. The Catholic Re-lief Services Collec on serves Jesus in the vic ms of hu-man trafficking, in those who suffer from unjust laws, and in those who need pastoral care and humanitarian assistance across the globe. Through your support with today’s Collec on, you help Jesus in disguise. Please be generous.
