November 28, 2010 † First Sunday of Advent

“HAPPY NEW YEAR!” Perhaps you’re thinking that I’m a little ahead of schedule, but we Catholics celebrate a new year on the first Sunday of Advent. And I’ve made a new year’s resolution: I’m changing my preaching style in or-der to teach about a topic that is central to our experience as Catholics: the Mass itself. The main reason I’m doing this is because in the United States, and in every English-speaking country in the world, some of the language of the Mass is going to change next Advent 2011. The recommendation has been made that prior to these changes, now would be a good time to teach the people about the Mass, the parts of the Mass, what we do and why we do it, and how to get more out of it. And I heartily agree! Although changes in the liturgy are bothersome and distracting to many, I believe this is a great opportunity to think about what we do every time we gather for Mass! Honestly: since the Mass was first translated into English, Catholics have been saying the same thing for 40 years. We’re so used to it that we can easily recite things from memory without really thinking about what we’re doing! But now with some changes coming, we have a chance to stop and think about how we celebrate Mass, and maybe with some information and deliberate study of the Mass and its parts, we might actually get more out of the Mass than ever before! I’m not going to focus much on the changes yet, however. We have a year to prepare for that. My point is that my preaching style is going to be a bit different, more instructional with notes and quotes, and even multimedia. We have seven English Masses: 6 at St. Ed’s and 1 at San Felipe – I will be giving the same pres-entation seven times and as I rotate through the weekend Mass schedule I will give the next installment in the sermon series. I don’t know how long this will last, but I’m looking forward to sharing the Church’s teachings and my own thoughts on the central experience of our Faith: the worship of God in Christ through the ritual of the Eucharist! Tune in to 57.6, KJLA AM (or satellite Galaxy 19) to listen to the readings, homily, and prayers of the Mass in English live at 8:00 AM from St. Bonaventure Church in Huntington Beach, with a rebroadcast at 1:00 PM.

“CHRISTMAS COMES BUT ONCE A YEAR” MAKE THIS A GIVING CHRISTMAS

We are once again rapidly ap-proaching the glorious celebra-tion of Christmas. We are happy to announce our seven-teenth annual Giving Tree which will be in the Church, beginning with the 5:30 PM Mass on De-cember 4. In place of the usual Christmas decorations, the Tree will be decorated with envelopes containing the names of needy families in our community. If

helping a family this year will enrich your Christ-mas, this is the perfect opportunity. Inside each envelope are the names of family mem-bers and ages of the children. You may choose any envelope. Usually food is provided so the family can prepare their Holiday meal, plus gifts for the family, especially the children. Do what feels right for your family and experience the joy of a truly Giving Christmas. Please contact the family in advance to get an idea of their needs and verify ALL information listed in the envelope. There are names and phone num-bers of Spanish interpreters with the family infor-mation that can assist you as needed. It is also VERY important that you enter all infor-mation into the Christmas Giving Tree Book on the table by the tree. Another option is to choose an envelope from our other Tree. You may donate scrip, cash or checks which will be used to provide food and necessities to needy families. There will be a box in the Church office for these donations. We will also have a Toy Bin in Church throughout the Advent Season. All toys should be new or hand crafted and left unwrapped. The Giving Tree can be one way this Christmas for you and your family to glorify the Lord. In the words of Jesus, “Whatever you do to the least of my brethren, you do unto me”. May God Bless You, The Christian Service Office
