THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD First Reading: Isaiah 60:1-6 Jerusalem is extolled as a place of glory and splendor because the Lord has come to His own city. Second Reading: Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6 Paul tells the Ephesians that his special mission is to make the Gentiles co-heirs with the Jews in Christ — “members of the same body and sharers of the promise.” Gospel: Matthew 2:1-12 Herod learns that Wise Men from the East are searching for the newly born Christ Child. He instructs them to find the Child and to report His whereabouts to him. The Wise Men follow a star to the place where Mary and Jesus are and offer the Child gold, frankincense, and myrrh. They do not return to Herod but follow another route to their own country.

A gift for you this Christmas from Msgr. Puleo Please take home a copy of the Rediscover

the Saints, by Matthew Kelly offered through Dynamic Catholic

We are capable of so much more than we think. You have no idea what you are capable of. None of us do. God is constantly trying to open our eyes to the amazing possibilities that he has enfolded in our being. The saints continue this work, encouraging us to explore all our God-given potential, not with speeches but with the example of their lives.

When we have the courage to collaborate with God and pursue our truest self, he lights a fire within us that is so bright and warm, it keeps shining long after our days on this earth have come to an end. The lives of the saints have captivated the people of every age for this very reason.

There are two questions that confront the people of every place and time, questions that confront you and me today: Are you satisfied with the direction the world is moving in? Are you satisfied with your life?

These questions are always before us, within us, around us. They are part of our spiritual quest and part of our human quest. These questions linger in our minds when we read the news of happenings in our own country and around the world. They tickle our souls when we witness the battle between good and evil, however it manifests in our own lives.

Are you satisfied with the direction the world is moving in? This is one of life’s inescapable questions, and we each respond with passionate action or selfish indifference.

Our collective dissatisfaction with the direction of the world leads to the consensus that the world needs changing. And yet, we seem gripped by exasperation and paralyzed by the false belief that we can’t do anything about it. The saints dispel that exasperation and inspire us to bold action. They remind us over and over again: We can change the world.

WORD OF LIFE “When I meet another parent of a child with Down syndrome, there is usually a moment of instant recognition and understanding. Our eyes meet, and we smile conspiratorially, as if we’re in on the same secret: the fundamental truth that every life is a good and perfect gift… Our love for our children has nothing to do with their abilities. We love them simply because of who they are, and understanding this teaches us how to truly love everyone.”

PRAY FOR POPE FRANCIS AND HIS INTENTIONS Promotion of World Peace: We pray that Christians, followers of other religions and all people of goodwill may promote peace and justice in the world.

ST. JAMES CHURCH in BASKING RIDGE PRESENTS:

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS

“Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.” (Matthew 2:11) The image of the Magi kneeling before the infant Jesus and opening their treasure chests for Him is an image that we should all try to follow each day. In gratitude for all that we have been given, we are called to generously share all of our gifts, not just the ones we pick and choose. God wants us to be generous with everything, but especially that one thing that means the most to you.

SOLEMNITY OF THE EPIPHANY - DAY TWELVE Epiphany is a large celebration, especially in Spanish speaking countries. Things look different around the household: the infant Jesus in the manger now has a small gold crown and is wearing regal robes. The figures of the wise men have reached Bethlehem, completing the nativity scene.

The Church extends itself on Epiphany to the homes of the faithful. The custom of blessing the home on this day probably originated from these words in the Gospel, "And entering into the house, they found the Child with Mary, His Mother, and falling down they adored Him." The priest blesses the house if he can be present, but if not, the father of the family may do so.

THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD The Coming of the Wise Men

Wise men and wise women still seek him! The Wise Men journeyed from the East to find the Christ Child, Jesus. Today, we have traveled to St. Elizabeth-St. Brigid Parish seeking Jesus and we have brought our gifts that represent gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Our offering this morning is ourselves—our time, talent and treasure. By our gifts, we are making Jesus known throughout the world. ~ from Sixty-Second Stewardship Sermons by Charles Cloughen, Jr THE NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS OF A SAINT On New Year’s eve, 1895-1896 Gemma writes: "So I resolved to change my life, because Jesus had given me clear lights to the effect that I should be a religious. I had a good occasion to do this, for we were about to begin the year of 1896. I wrote in a little notebook: "During this new year I resolve to begin a new life. I do not know what will happen to me during this year. But I abandon myself entirely to you, my God. And my aspirations and all my affections will be for You. I feel so weak, dear Jesus, but with Your help I hope and resolve to live a different life, that is, a life closer to You."

A PRAYER FOR THE NEW YEAR Remember us, O God; from age to age be our comforter. You have given us the wonder of time, blessings in days and nights, seasons and years. Bless your children at the turning of the year and fill the months ahead with the bright hope that is ours in the coming of Christ. You are our God, living and reigning, forever and ever. R/. Amen. ST. ELIZABETH-ST. BRIGID BIBLE STUDY LIVING THE BEATITUDES IN EVERYDAY LIFE

Kingdom of Happiness is a new 8-part parish program that unveils Jesus’ plan for happiness in the Beatitudes. In a world that offers fleeting pleasures in place of true happiness and false promises that actually lead us away from happiness, it’s time more than ever to turn to the Beatitudes and enter into the Kingdom of Happiness. Kingdom of Happiness will: Show how the Beatitudes are much more than nice

sayings, they are the path to happiness charted by Christ himself;

Expose the “anti-Beatitudes” for what they are: the kingdom of man’s false promises of happiness that lead only to misery; and

Inspire a renewed resolve to live the Beatitudes through video profiles of real-life people living the Beatitudes in their everyday life.
