CSA Update

I would like to offer a word of thanks

for the support we have received from

you, our generous parishioners, toward

the 2019 CSA.

As you know, our required goal of

$156,000 cannot be a'ained without your

contribu(ons. As you will see on Page 4,

we s(ll have much to collect. We are

sending a second appeal le'er to all of you that we have not

yet heard from … please prayerfully consider helping your

parish to reach its assigned goal of this archdiocesan cam-

paign, “Opening Doors to Witness Christ.”

For those of you who have already sent in a dona(on or

pledge, I would like to once again thank you for your gener-

osity and support.

Defending human life, promotes dignity of the person

‘For the Church, there is no dis(nc(on between defend-

ing human life and promo(ng the dignity of the human per-

son. Pope Benedict XVI writes in Caritas in Veritate that,

"The Church forcefully maintains this link between life ethics

and social ethics, fully aware that 'a society lacks solid foun-

da(ons when, on the one hand, it asserts values such as the

dignity of the person, jus(ce and peace, but then, on the

other hand, radically acts to the contrary by allowing or tol-

era(ng a variety of ways in which human life is devalued and

violated, especially where it is weak or marginalized.'" (No.

15).

As a gi? from God, every human life is sacred from con-

cep(on to natural death. The life and dignity of every person

must be respected and protected at every stage and in every

condi(on. The right to life is the first and most fundamental

principle of human rights that leads Catholics to ac(vely

work for a world of greater respect for human life and great-

er commitment to jus(ce and peace.’ (usccb.org)

Crea!ng a Culture of Encounter

‘The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops

(USCCB) announces the publishing of “Crea(ng a Culture of

Encounter: A Guide for Joyful Missionary Disciples” for use

by parishes and communi(es of faith around the country.

This Spanish/English guide will help Catholics live out the

call of Jesus to meet those on the peripheries with the Good

News of the Gospel for their lives. It offers an organized five

-session parish encounter process to help small groups to

dig deeper into the Church’s evangelizing mission.

In each session, par(cipants take up a new aspect of Je-

sus’ encounter with the disciples on the road to Emmaus

and focus on a different element of the evangelical call to

spread the Gospel, inspired by Pope Francis’s apostolic ex-

horta(on Evangelii Gaudium. The five-session guide invites

par(cipants to See, Judge, Act, Celebrate, and take Mission-

ary Ac(on to follow the pastoral circle process.

This new community resource will deepen missionary

discipleship in parishes, lay ecclesial movements, Catholic

schools, parish councils, religious groups, and faith for-

ma(on teams of any cultural or ethnic background. The pro-

cess of encounter will bear good fruit, as Catholics take up

their missionary mandate in families, schools, workplaces,

communi(es, parishes, and wherever they find those in

need of God’s love. It is par(cularly recommended for those

seeking to build encounter and unity in culturally diverse

environments.

The document was developed as a resource by the Sub-

commi'ee on Hispanic Affairs under the direc(on of the

Commi'ee on Cultural Diversity in the Church as an adapta-

(on of the process developed for the Na(onal Encuentro of

Hispanic/La(no Ministry.’ You can read the document at

usccb.org

Earlier this year, parishioners

shared their hopes and

dreams as Catholics and

parishioners at St. Frances

Cabrini. Their responses are

in this cross and in ads such

as the one on Page 7

We’ll feature more in the

coming weeks.

That’s all for now,

see you in Church;

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) RCIA is a process for unbap(zed adults and children of cateche(cal age, as well as those

bap(zed in another Chris(an denomina(on, to:

• Learn more about the Catholic faith. Explore the beliefs of the Roman Catholic Church.

• Enter into the Catholic Church. “Catholicism is a dynamic way of life designed by God

to help you explore your full poten(al.” (Ma'hew Kelly, Dynamic Catholic Mass Journal)

• Complete the sacraments of Ini(a(on: Confirma(on and Eucharist while con(nuing on

their faith journeys to “know and appreciate the grace and power of God that already

lives within you through your bap(sm.”(Archdiocese of Detroit Handbook for Rite of Chris(an Ini(a(on of Adults)

The RCIA team of Cabrini would like to extend an invita(on to you, your family, friends

and our parish community - anyone who may be interested in refreshing their knowledge of

our faith - to join us as we begin RCIA 2020 Journey of Faith.

Your help is needed!

We truly are grateful for the gifts that have been-

received.

Still, we haven’t heard from many of you and are

$64,000 short of our target goal of $156,000.

Please prayerfully consider your participation in the

CSA, which fuels the engine of the Gospel mission of our

Archdiocese - more than 100 ministries touching every

soul in southeast Michigan.

This includes the parishioners of St. Frances Cabrini.

We encourage online giving, which can be done at

give.aodcsa.org

You can also put your gift/pledge in the collection bas-

ket at Sunday Mass or bring it to the Parish Office.

Whatever we collect above $156,000 stays here in the

parish.

On the other hand, if we don’t meet our goal, the

shortfall comes from our budget.

A reminder letter is going in the mail this week - we can

reach our goal if everyone lends their support.

Nourishing the hungry

St. Leo Soup Kitchen, Saturday, Aug. 10

We’ll prepare and serve lunch for approximately 150

guests at St. Leo, in Detroit. We need “at home” volunteers

to cook Manwich (one pound of hamburger per one can of

Manwich in a zip-lock bag), baked goods and paper prod-

ucts. Call the Parish Office, (313)381-5601, Ext. 1050, if you

can help. All donations need to be at the Parish Office by 5

p.m. Friday, Aug. 9. Call Barb Engler (313)388-7827, if you

are interested in preparing and serving the meal that day.

18th Sunday in Ordinary Time

What we struggle all our lives to learn is

that life does not consist of possessions nor

our perceived security, but of being pos-

sessed by God.

The St. Vincent de Paul Society would like our caring par-

ish family to know how helpful your offerings are to us.

Our neighbors in need truly depend on your generosity.

Using our poor boxes, located at all Church entrances,

makes dona(ng, whatever amount, simple and convenient.

Listen as you pass by these poor boxes and you will hear

the cries of the poor. Join us in helping them.

“My favorite memory is the baptism,

first communion, first reconciliation, and confirmation for my children.

The sacraments are an amazing gift we can give our children to help

them grow in their faith. I love being

Catholic more each day. I started listening to Christian music and

Catholic radio, going to adoration reading books and becoming more

involved at Mass. Now I feel like I learn something new each day and

realize how little I know and the depth of our faith.”
