Prayer and Humility Arm yourself with prayer rather than a sword; wear humility rather than fine clothes. ~ St. Dominic

REFLCTING ON GOD’S WORD Two years ago Michon and her children had gotten their own apartment and left the safety of the women’s shelter behind. Three weeks ago she brought the children back for the first time since they had left. They came for the feast celebrating the grand opening of the shelter’s new addition. The feast had felt just like old times, only better, with plenty of speeches, laughter, tears, and hugs, and more than enough food to go around. Michon was glad to be able to bring a big chicken salad to share. There had been plenty of meals when she had had nothing to contribute. At the feast everyone commented on how happy Michon’s chil-dren looked and how much they’d grown. Since then she had already returned to the shelter four times as a volun-teer. A feast could be defined as a large gathering of people to share food and memories in celebration of a sig-nificant event or vision. Feasts have an amazing power to heal and nourish our spirits, to bind us together in love, and motivate us to care for one another. The feasts in today’s scriptures illustrate the miraculous physical and spiritual nourishment that takes place when we gather for the Eucha-rist, to celebrate the memory and promise of “the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:39).

Welcome to St. Francis of Assisi! We extend a special welcome to all our visitors and

new parishioners who have come to celebrate Mass with us today! If you are new to our community, please intro-duce yourself to our clergy. If you live in this area and attend regularly, we invite you to join our parish of St. Francis of Assisi. Registration is necessary for better care of souls, more effective administration of sick calls, and matters pertaining to baptism, education, marriage and burial.

Registration is very easy and the green "Parish Reg-istration" cards can be found in the pamphlet holder above the table in the lobby. After completing, please place in the Parish Drop Box, located in the door by the water fountain in the lobby.

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — All you who thirst, come to the water! You without money, come to the feast! (Isaiah 55:1-3). Psalm — The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs (Psalm 145). Second Reading — Nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ (Romans 8:35, 37-39). Gospel — All ate until satisfied; they collected twelve baskets of what was left over (Matthew 14:13-21).

GRACE IS EVERYWHERE Grace is everywhere. People of faith act on this be-lief. As Christians we are called to reach deeply into our-selves and find God’s presence there. We are called to reach outside ourselves and find God there, too. The reality of grace has sustained and nourished peo-ple beyond numbering. The church never tires of telling the story of the loaves and fishes. It is narrated no less than six times in the four Gospels. We imagine the hesi-tant apostles reaching into the baskets and finding bread, always more bread. We anticipate the ending. The apos-tles will wear out before the bread runs out. At another time and place, Isaiah also spoke of an abundance, this time of water, sweet honey, and rich milk. Always, always God is a gift-giver, and we the receiv-ers. Our response is doxology, or praise. In the second reading Paul provides the words and attitude. Praise is everywhere.

LIVING GOD’S WORD In the Gospel we hear that Jesus “was moved with pity for them, and he cured their sick” (Matthew 14:14). Then we hear Jesus say to the disciples, “There is no need for them to go away; give them some food your-selves” (Matthew 14:16). How do these statements speak to your heart today?

Prayer to Avert Storms Father, all the elements of nature obey Your command. Calm the storms that threaten us and turn our fear of Your power into praise of Your goodness. Give us the fine weather we pray for so that we may rejoice in Your gifts of kindness and use them always for Your glory and our good. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with the Holy Spirit one God forever and ever. Amen.

From Your Parish Nurse That morning cup of coffee does more than help you get going, research shows. Here’s how much you may need daily to lower your risk of these 3 increasingly common diseases. ♦ Dementia & Alzheimer’s Disease -3 to 5 cups (drinking

more than 5 cups didn’t offer as much protection) ♦ Type 2 Diabetes - 4 cups or more ♦ Parkinson’s Disease - 5 cups or more “I pray that everything may go well with you & that you may be in good health, as your spirit is well.” ~3 John 2

Thanks to all who donated peanut butter and jelly for sandwiches for the bag lunches we give to the needy. It truly is appreciated. Thanks again!

St. Francis Chronicle

Francis: Bluey, I see the pastor passing by, he must be back from Ireland? Blue Jay: Correct, dear saint, they tell me he spent some days at a meeting of his religious com-munity before taking a vacation, driving around seeing his folks. Francis: Well, that’s important nowadays although in my days those who entered religious life didn’t get in touch with their folks anymore. Blue Jay: Wow, that was tough, thank God the Holy Spirit has been renewing the Church with the passage of time, bringing more wisdom and light into the lives of the faithful. Francis: Maybe you’re right, Bluey, but vowed religious still need to be aware of human weak-ness when it comes to giving God the service He is due, what I mean is, getting too involved with family matters could possibly be a side-track to doing God’s work.

Blue Jay: And distance is no problem nowadays, like in your day, dear saint. Francis: With all the modern gizmos the opposite is true, people are living in each other’s heads day in and day out, isn’t that true? Blue Jay: If you mean that we are having too much communication with each other maybe you’re right….some disci-pline is needed in the use of various types of social media nowadays…. Francis: Dear bird, as usual you hit the nail on the head, and no, I don’t believe you have a bird-brain at all, at all!

RCIA PROGRAM NEWS Do you feel a nudge in one of the following ways? RCIA Classes will begin Wednesday, Sept. 17th at 7:15 p.m. 1. As a non-Catholic, do you want to learn more about the Catholic Faith? 2. As a Catholic, do you want to learn more about your faith? 3. As a Catholic who has not received all the sacraments God has blessed us with, is this your time to do so? 4. As a Catholic, would you like to sponsor someone who wants to enter the church? If you are interested in this life changing program or if you have questions, please contact Deacon Dick thru parish office at 681-9115. WORLDWIDE MARRIAGE ENCOUNTER Husbands and Wives: What have you done for your marriage today? Successful marriages don’t work on automatic pilot – at least not for long. Like a garden, they require constant attention: fertilizing, watering, and weeding. Healthy marriages, like gardens, don’t die suddenly. More often they fade away from a gradual lack of attentiveness, letting things slide, taking each other for granted. Join us for a Worldwide Marriage Encounter and discover God’s plan for joy, romance and passion in your marriage. The next weekend in this diocese is August 22-24. For more information or to apply, call (813) 270-7832 or go on-line at www.wwme-tampabay.org. Choose Life… One of Dr. Seuss’ most charming books, “Horton Hears A Who,” conveys a powerful pro-life message—from Horton’s repeated proclamation that “A person’s a person no matter how small,” to the ridicule and hardship he endures for defending tiny beings that others can’t see. Scripture tells us we must all become as little children. WORDS AND WEEDS A man of words and not of deeds, is like a garden full of weeds. ~ Anonymous nursery rhyme

Stewardship of Time & Talent Salute In gratitude for God’s gifts of time and talent to our parish, we acknowledge and salute Pauline Bull, Eucharistic Minister of Holy Communion… Thank you, Pauline!!

Stewardship Reflection “Why spend your money for what is not bread; your wages for what fails to satisfy?” ~ Isaiah 55:2 Of all the ways we are asked to be generous, giving our money can be the most challenging. God understand this. Remember though that we are called to be generous with all our gifts, in-cluding our money. We are called to give from our “first fruits” and not from what is “leftover”.
