Views from Fr. Larry Pichard, Pastor

Fr. Zach will be on vacation from February 9 through the

17th. We are pleased to announce that our new Facilities

Director comes on duty tomorrow, Monday, February 9. Donny Floyd has years of experience in serving as a facilities director for several local companies and comes with a wealth of knowledge. He also knows our Church and Parish Center since he has been a parishioner for the last seven years. We now welcome him to our staff.

This week will be a relatively quiet week, but I hesitate to call it the “calm before the storm.” The following week will be very busy as we welcome the wonderful season of Lent. On Tuesday, February 17, we prepare for Lent by being forgiven or “shriven” of our sins in a giant penance service called Shrove Tuesday, an ancient English custom the day before Ash Wednesday. The Latin French world developed Mardi Gras, Fat Tuesday, as the last day to eat meat before entering Lenten abstinence from meat and fasting on simple foods. The Latin Spanish-Portuguese world developed Carnival, which comes from “carne va” or “the meat is going away.” The English Catholic world, however, concentrated on a spiritual preparation of entering Lent free of one’s sins. So, with our own priests and with a number of visiting priests, we will host a penance service at 7:00 pm with the opportunity for sacramental reconciliation. Please bring your palms from last Palm Sunday so that we can burn them to make ashes for Ash Wednesday; you will drop them off in baskets in the narthex.

The next day we will celebrate Ash Wednesday. We will have multiple Masses with the distribution of ashes after the homily and Word services. For the last several years, because of the crowds, we offered Word services with continual imposition of ashes. But this Ash Wednesday we will not offer the continual imposition of ashes. This year we will return to a Word service with readings from Scripture, a homily, the imposition of ashes, and a final prayer and blessing. People coming after that will have to wait for the next Mass or Word service. Be sure to get a bulletin next weekend so that you will have all the necessary information about times for Ash Wednesday Masses and services of the Word.
