Good afternoon and welcome to Alder Street, home of Atherton Collieries for this FA Vase, 1st Qualifying Round Tie against Northern Counties East League, Division One outfit Brodsworth Welfare. I hope our visitors had a good journey to visit us, enjoy the hospitality they will be offered whilst here and have a safe return home after the game. Today game should have been played at Knowsley Road this afternoon, but due to the powers that be at Sky wanting to televise the Saints vs Castleford game this evening we had to find ourselves a new venue to host the contest. We are grateful to all at Atherton Collieries for coming to our aid in allowing us to use their facilities for this match. Unfortunately due to “annual leave” we have had to print the programme a week early for this particular fixture so the content will not be as up to date as it usually is and the standard we expect to give you so please accept our apologies. An extra insert sheet will be in the programme to hopefully cover some of these issues and give you some more up to date information for this match. Normal service will be resumed for the next issue. Today’s visitors have had a torrid time of it recently with a couple of awful seasons under their belts, it must have been tough watching at points last season as they finished bottom of the Northern Counties East League, Premier Division, they failed to win a competitive match all season drawing twice in the league and losing the other 36 league matches and two cup contests, shipping 182 goal in their league campaign. Things have been not started off too well this season with “Broddy” conceding seven on the opening day before conceding seven again a fortnight later, they did however secure a first league point of the season with a 1-1 home draw in their second league game and were on the wrong end of a 4-3 result last midweek. The FA Vase is another vital source of income to all clubs and we are no different whilst we have not won a match in the competition for five seasons, it’s always nice to have a cup run and dream of emulating the team of 1987 lifting the trophy at Wembley, at 5pm we could be 90 minutes closer or dreaming for another season!

Lets get behind the lads this afternoon and hopefully cheer them on to victory, the first one in the FA Vase since 2005!

Enjoy the Game . . . Jeff Voller

Chairman’s Notes . . . Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Alder House, home of Atherton Collieries FC for this FA Carlsberg Vase 1st Qualifying Round encounter with Brodsworth Welfare of the Northern Counties East League. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters, along with today’s match officials and our own home support are treated to an entertaining encounter. Many thanks must go to our friends at Atherton Collieries for allowing us to use their facilities following the late notification of the change in the Super League fixture between Saints and Castleford Tigers which meant our Knowsley Road home was unavailable this afternoon. I am in the unusual position of writing today’s programme notes prior to our FA Cup fixture with

Glossop North end last Saturday (due to holiday commitments). Hopefully things went well! Whilst the form of today’s visitors has been poor over the last couple of seasons our own FA Vase record in recent time has been dire having not won in the competition since beating Marske United 3-2 at the start of the 2005-06 campaign! We’ve lost out by the odd goal in our last four outings against Abbey Hey, Cheadle Town, Ashton Athletic and Padiham. The winners of today’s encounter will entertain either Cheadle Town or Worsborough Bridge in two weeks time. Our next fixture should see the lads travel to neighbours Bootle on Tuesday evening for a tough Vodkat League Premier Division fixture (subject to replays). Enjoy the game . . . . In Town Today . . . The Club was formed in 1912 as Brodsworth Miners Welfare F.C, named after the local colliery Brodsworth Main. During this period they played in local leagues. In 1924 the club moved to there present location at what was known as Woodlands East. The club soon had something to celebrate when it won the Yorkshire League the following year. Unfortunately many of the clubs records were destroyed by fire. In 1974 as a result of financial problems and a failing team the club had to relinquish their ties with the Yorkshire league.

By the early eighties the clubs fortunes had started to improve under the management of Joe Yorke who was assisted by the influx of some talented local players from the Brodsworth youth team. Honours from the Doncaster league flowed thick and fast culminating in the club winning the Sheffield junior cup, Doncaster league division one and the league cup in 1984 (being beaten only once in a total of 42 games). 1985 saw Brodsworth finishing third in the premier division and 1986 saw the club improve on this by winning the premiership title. Eventually the club made the decision to progress to the Northern Counties East League . Unfortunately this turned out to be a decision that saw the club struggle to achieve at this level of play. The move eventually paid off and the club turned the corner and managed to complete the 1998/99 season as runners up in the first division and gained promotion to the premier division. Despite financial problems the club has persevered with its efforts to make improvements to the ground over the years. One major improvement which the club was proud of was the installation of flood lights which are probably one of the best set in the league. At the start of 2002/03 season the new stand situated behind the goal opened with the aid of local businesses. Unfortunately over the last couple of seasons the ground has been a victim of vandalism, something that the committee members have worked hard to resolve but it has still taken a toll on finances at the club which has ultimately affected the teams performance on the pitch. But with the club now heading in a positive direction behind the scenes with a new academy team set up for the 2009/10 season and some promising youngsters coming through the ranks, and also the 2010/11 sees the coming of a new senior woman's team and also big plans in motion for the ground, the Long-term future for Brodsworth is finally looking bright.

Match Report Tuesday 24th August 2010; Vodkat League, Premier Division St Helens Town 2-3 Congleton Town 0-1 Shane Reaney 10 Minutes, 1-1 Liam Pearson 45+2 Minutes, 1-2 Matt Haddrell 61 Minutes (penalty), 2-2 Liam Pearson 72 Minutes, 2-3 Mark Beeston 90+4 Minutes. Sometimes football is a cruel game and this was never more evident that this evening when St Helens Town put in their best performance of the season but a goal in the fourth minute of added on time at the end of the match denied the hosts a point which was the least that they deserved. The visitors netted an early goal when Matt Haddrell’s long ball over the top was collected by Shane Reaney and his first time lobbed effort beat the advancing Dale Newbrook in the hosts’ goal. St Helens had a chance to level on 19 minutes but Marc Stephens could only shoot wide of the right hand upright after a surging run. On the half hour mark Congleton almost doubled their advantage when a long diagonal ball from left to right by Jack Watson found Carl Nesbbitt on the left wing and his cross towards the far post found the unmarked Robert Heath but his headed effort was palmed away by Newbrook and the danger cleared. Moments later at the other end of the pitch skipper Ben Kay won the ball in midfield and advanced before finding Iain Dyson on the left of the penalty area he beat his man and got into the before shooting into the side netting. The first of a few moments of controversy were to come in the 40th minute when Liam Pearson got the better of his defender and into the box on the left only to have his legs taken by the Congleton man, stonewall penalty to most but not to the referee and play was allowed to continue. St Helens got their just deserts in added on time at the end of the first half when Mike Fargher found Pearson with an excellent ball and he made space for himself to get into the box and shot home to level matters at the interval. The hosts started the second period off well with chances created for Pearson, Frazer and Dyson but neither of them tested Matt Conkie in the Congleton goal. The second moment of controversy came on the hour mark when in an identical position to the “foul” on Pearson at the end of the first half Ryan Baker was felled in similar fashion and to the astonishment of plenty Mr Copeland pointed to the spot from where Haddrell converted to put Congleton back in the lead. Good work by Pearson on the right and a subsequent cross towards Dyson on the far post could have seen St Helens level had it not been for the intervention of Adam Vickers who turned the ball behind for a corner. The scores were level on 72 minutes when an attack down the right saw Fargher link with Pearson on the edge of the box, the striker tried his luck and Conkie looked to have it covered but somehow managed to dive over the ball and Pearson wheeled away to celebrate. The closing stages of the contest resembled basketball with end to end action as both sides looked to take a maximum return. St Helens had a brace of chances as first Dyson had an overhead kick blocked on the line by Simon Smith before a counter attack saw Daley Woods find Pearson who in turn found Dyson who slotted the ball home only to be denied by a dubious offside flag. Congleton then had a chance when Smith’s effort from 25 yards had to be parried by Newbrook in the St Helens goal and the loose ball was cleared to safety. In added on time at the end of the game the hosts created two chances first Woods on the counter found Pearson who appeared to be pushed in the Congleton box but again no foul was deemed to have been committed. Then Pearson played in Woods and Conkie had to be alert to keep his effort out. The killer blow came in the fourth minute of added on time when a free kick was sent into box and it was flicked on towards the far post where Mark Beeston who was hugging the goal-line with his onside nature being questioned headed home and the goal was allowed to stand. St Helens Town were gutted to have had a share of the spoils snatched from them so late in the day but will know if they carry this kind of performance into the upcoming games they will be winning more times than they lose.

St Helens Town . . . St. Helens Town Football Club 1946 - present

The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs in the Merseyside

area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town are the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at

. . . A Brief History Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby.

St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann (pictured right), who signed for Manchester City 60 years ago last season and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the early stages. Bill Foulkes (pictured right below) was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil (pictured opposite), who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United.

Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, perhaps none more so than 2008/09, with the club in the relegation positions until the end of March, when Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed the new manager and the team rallied to win six of the last eight games to pull clear of the relegation zone.

The close season saw Bickerstaffe step down and Lee Riley promoted to manager. A number of new faces have joined the club and this combination of youth and experience will be looking to improve on last season’s impressive ninth position and success in the cup competitions. The Knowsley Road ground is being demolished this autumn, necessitating a temporary move to Ashton Town, but August 2011 will see the club re-locate to the new stadium, sharing once again with Saints rugby league club.

Steve Prescott’s Engage Mutual Challenge

The Steve Prescott Foundation is delighted to announce its next amazing challenge - five marathons in five days ahead of this year’s Engage Super League Grand Final. Of these five marathons, Steve Prescott himself will run four in four days, with the fifth marathon being opened up to fans on the day of the final. The inspirational Steve Prescott MBE, is keen to add this challenge to an already impressive portfolio of physical feats and hopes that fans will get behind his latest fundraising endeavours. There are Four opportunities for people to run alongside Steve on this multiple marathon attempt.

• Run the Full Four Days, 104 Miles

• Run a Full Day

• Run a Section of a Day

• Run a Mile in the Fanzone

“Running the London Marathon earlier this year was a tough yet rewarding challenge, so taking on four in four days will really push me to the limit – but I can’t wait and am already getting stuck into the training. Having fans complete the fifth marathon seems like a perfect end to the challenge, and will hopefully raise some much needed cash, and awareness for our two beneficiary charities.”

“Keep on Running: Steve Prescott’s Engage Mutual Challenge” will begin on the morning of Tuesday 28th September at the KC Stadium in Hull, The Foundation are hoping friends and fans will run alongside Steve as he embarks upon the 104 mile route to Manchester’s Old Trafford. This epic challenge aims to raise a significant amount of funds for The Foundation Steve set up back in 2007, benefiting two charities close to his heart; The Christie Hospital in Manchester, where he receives treatment for a rare cancer, and the Try Assist Fund which supports those seriously injured whilst playing rugby league.

Following his ultra marathon, Steve is challenging rugby league fans to run a collective 26 miles of their own in the Grand Final Fanzone at Old Trafford. Engage Mutual will be hosting this fifth marathon in their Health & Fitness area on Saturday 2nd October, where a treadmill will be in place for fans to run a sponsored leg of the final marathon. To be involved, participants need to sign up on the SPF website, www.steveprescottfoundation.co.uk. Spaces are limited, but there are other ways to show support for the event, either by cheering the various runners on before they head to their seats for the Engage Super League season finale, or by making a donation. Donations can be made online via the website.

If you would like to support Steve in this incredible challenge or would like to be involved in the event, please visit www.steveprescottfoundation.co.uk or phone the SPF secretary Martin Blondel on 07971 792 859.

Win a Brand New Toyota Aygo with St Helens Town . . .

St Helens Town have launched a brand new sponsorship package for the 2010-11 season which will see one lucky participant drive away a brand new Toyota Aygo worth almost £9000. The package forms part of the club’s main sponsorship deal with Bootle based car dealership Johnsons Toyota Liverpool who have donated the car and who will be assisting the club in promoting the event across the region. In addition to raising funds for the senior and junior St Helens Town teams the

sponsorship project will be supporting local charity The Steve Prescott Foundation who will receive 50% of all profits. Town Chairman John McKiernan said, ‘This is a fantastic opportunity to raise the club’s profile as well as some much need funds for the whole club and The Steve Prescott Foundation. We are extremely grateful to Johnsons Toyota Liverpool for their generous support and hopefully the public and business community will get behind the project.’ He added, ‘The Foundation is very well know across the region and has been successful in raising a huge amount of money across a number of activities, many of the sport related, and we thought the Town’s football club should do its bit!’ ‘Steve Prescott is best known for his Rugby League exploits with St Helens, Hull, Wakefield, Ireland and as a GB Lions tourist; but there is a football connection as his son played for the St Helens Town Juniors U8s last season and has recently been signed by Liverpool FC.’ Gareth Shone, General Sales Manager at Johnsons said, ‘Our partnership with St Helens Town continues to develop and this season we have become the club’s main sponsor. We will be looking at a range of activities to ensure we both benefit from the partnership – with the ‘win-a-Toyota-Car’ project hopefully proving to be a successful start.’ The club have 200 sponsorship packages available at £100 each which will give individuals and businesses the opportunity to win the car. In addition, sponsor details will be added to a ‘roll-of-honour’ in the club’s printed and on-line matchday programme and sponsors will have their details added to the official club website. All participants will receive a signed commemorative certificate and will be entered in to the draw for the car which will be made on Saturday 26 March 2011 or as soon as all 200 packages have been sold. Martin Blondel, Secretary of The Steve Prescott Foundation said, ‘We’re always on the look-out for new fundraising ideas and when St Helens Town approached us we were delighted with their offer. We are looking forward to working alongside the Football Club and hope to raise a lot of money for the two charities we support the Christie Cancer Hospital & the Try Assist Fund’ For further information, or to purchase a sponsorship package please contact Andy Langley on 07850740894. Vodkat League News Developments On And Off The Field For The Old Boys (Continued) "Brett has got the Club to the stage where players want to play for the Club, which is a massive help, and it is hoped we can take the Club one-step further this season. I feel we have enough in the dressing-room to challenge for a top 5 finish, maybe higher. Brett and I are so looking forward to the challenge. We have known each other for 25 years but this alliance could challenge our friendship!!!!" Looking ahead to the campaign, Brett shares a similarly positive view. "Last season we started off really well, but we had a lot of injuries towards the end of season, with five or six players missing for a variety of reasons. We brought some players towards the back of the season who came in and did OK, but we lost a little bit of bite. We scored goals all right but began conceding more at the back. This season I've got all the players back that we lost, and although they are not all available at the moment, I feel we have started the season with a better squad. We are trying to improve every week, and have done OK so far, and I felt holding Bootle (in the FA Cup) to a draw was a good result for us. Once we get all our players back, I feel we can look to be challenging for a place in the top five, but we do need to steer clear of injuries and suspensions, as that's been a big issue for us in the past two years. "We feel we showed last year that when we get a settled squad we can beat anyone in the league, which we proved when we beat Stone Dominoes twice. We used 49 players last season and that's far too much, and if we get the breaks we need to put out the same squad each week, and get more consistency in selection that will help us a lot".

MS Fund Raising Day At GlossopMS Fund Raising Day At GlossopMS Fund Raising Day At GlossopMS Fund Raising Day At Glossop Glossop North End AFC have designated their home match against Squires Gate on Saturday 4th September as a fundraising match on behalf of Buxton and Glossop friends fighting MS. This charity has been the nominated charity of the Glossop North End Supporters Club since it was reformed at the beginning of the 2009/10 season. The fundraising group was formed in August 2009 following the discovery that the Supporters Club Vice Chairman, Tim Barnett, had been diagnosed with MS. The aim of the fundraising group is to raise as much money as possible to be sent

ultimately to the MS Society to help fund their work in combating this debilitating condition. Tim has expressed his personal thanks to all at Glossop North End who have made the event possible. He said: "On the day of the match we will be doing bucket collections, selling wristbands, football cards and half time raffle tickets. In addition, the Glossop North End team will warm up in specially commissioned MS charity t-shirts and I will have a signed commemorative orange ball to be auctioned at the match". There will also be a special matchday programme with features relating to the charity and published recognition to all organisations and individuals who have contributed to the day. Tim added: "This match coincides with national Non-league day and it would be great to see a big crowd, and to see as much orange

as possible down at Surrey Street".

Developments On And Off The Field For The Old Boys Leek CSOB are in discussions with the local council regarding a new permanent home for the club's junior set up. The plan is that the Old Boys will establish a base at the Birchall Sports Facility in the town for their junior sides, which will give them the opportunity to generate revenue from their own activities at a permanent site. Chairman Chris McMullan explained: "The facility at Birchall is currently in a poor state of repair and has needed to be upgraded for a number of years, and plans are now underway to

begin improvements. We had a very positive meeting with Staffordshire Moorlands District Council last week, in conjunction with consultants from Manchester who the Council have brought in with regard to the business plan and the development plan for football in our area. "We are playing a major part in that, and it's hoped that by the end of the season work will be well underway, and perhaps even completed, in upgrading the facilities and the pitches at Birchall. It's a really positive development for our area, as nothing much has been done to upgrade sports facilities for some years". As well as benefitting from improved facilities, Chris is aiming to take advantage of revenue earning opportunities at the site. "We have 15 teams across all the age groups, and eight of them already play at Birchall. Once the developments are completed we would expect another two or three to play there. The new facilities will enable us to raise money for the club in a number of ways. There will be a function suite that we can use and hire out for small functions, and we are hoping to get a kitchen sorted out quickly too. On a Sunday morning there are hundreds of people down there playing and supporting, and we will be looking to generate income from selling food and drinks there. "The whole project is a good positive development for us, although it won't affect the first team, as they will continue to play at Harrison Park. In order to progress in this league you need to have good facilities, and we will continue to utilise Leek Town's ground for the foreseeable future". Meanwhile on the playing side, Old Boys first team manager Brett Barlow is now entering his second season in charge at Harrison Park, and strengthened both his playing squad and backroom staff in one fell swoop in the summer when he recruited John Powell as his assistant. Brett said: "John is a really good addition for us. On his day he is one of the best centre halves in the league, and pre-season there were a few clubs in higher leagues after him. When he comes in he makes a big difference playing wise, and brings in more professionalism. He's got a good wealth of experience and he's a great addition to the squad as a player as well as a joint manager. "He was the best man at my wedding, and I've known him a long time, so it wasn't too hard to persuade him to join us. I think we'll make a good partnership, he'll be the one talking to the players individually in the dressing room while I'll be the one shouting the instructions during games. I'm the bad cop and he's definitely the good cop!" John agrees with Brett's summing up of their respective roles. "Brett will be more of the voice and tactician, doing the shouting and kicking the "water bottles' and eating the pies! My role will be more laid back, playing as much as possible, but being there if a player has problems, someone they can talk with if they don't want to speak with Brett, while also having my say when the need arises.

St Helens Town News . . . Toyota Helping Town’s Drive for SuccessToyota Helping Town’s Drive for SuccessToyota Helping Town’s Drive for SuccessToyota Helping Town’s Drive for Success St Helens Town Football Club is delighted to announce that Johnsons Toyota Liverpool will become the club’s main sponsor for the forthcoming season and this will see the company’s Toyota brand emblazoned on the new Town kit throughout 2010-11.

Club Chairman John McKiernan said, ‘I am delighted that we’ve been able to develop our partnership with Johnsons and this builds upon the great support they offered St Helens Town throughout last season’. Johnsons Toyota Liverpool, the Bootle based car dealership, were initially the club’s Executive Programme Sponsors for season 2009-10 and extended their support courtesy of a number of match and match ball sponsorships along with the provision of a branded car

which formed part of the club’s Player of the Month awards. Johnsons were also extremely generous in their support of Town’s Bert Trautmann anniversary celebrations in November 2009. John McKiernan said, ‘We worked extremely hard to generate a huge amount of sponsorship last season and gave considerable coverage to a large number of new sponsors via our printed and on-line matchday programmes, club website and matchday activities. We are hopeful that last year’s efforts will provide a firm foundation for future seasons. “Johnsons Toyota Liverpool have given the club a record breaking financial boost during tough economic times and we feel that it is in part a recognition that St Helens Town can play a leading role in promoting their brand across the North West.’ He added, ‘Johnsons will be undertaking a number of promotional events and product placement activities across St Helens during the coming year and St Helens Town will be prominent throughout these. It’s a fantastic opportunity to raise the profile of the club prior to our arrival at the new stadium in August 2011!’ Gareth Shone, General Sales Manager at Johnsons Toyota Liverpool said, ‘Our work with St Helens Town last season proved an ideal opportunity to expand our brand across Merseyside and we are looking forward to developing and extending our partnership so that both ourselves and the club will continue to see significant benefits’. He added, ‘We have some exciting plans for the coming season which will raise the club’s profile along with additional sponsorship monies.’

Three Shirt Sponsors For Farsley AFC Farsley AFC chairman John Palmer has confirmed the new club's three shirt sponsors for the forthcoming season. Announcing the deals on the club's website, Palmer expressed his delight, saying: "The principal shirt sponsors are Suddard Davies Insurance Brokers. They have been my family's brokers for many years and I am delighted they have agreed to get involved with the club." The back of the shirt is sponsored by Sportsbulk

Suppliers, the club's kit suppliers, and Red, the well-known family run Design, Print and Embroidery company situated on Richardshaw Lane in Pudsey. Palmer explained: "Suddard Davies are an established business with particular experience in Commercial insurance. Sportsbulk Suppliers have been supporters of this club for many years and Red have been supplying us with merchandise for a couple of seasons. "All three sponsors offer differing expertise and we are delighted that they have chosen our club to promote their business". Managing Director Bill Geelan of Suddard Davies expressed his support for Farsley AFC: "We are, of course, absolutely delighted to become associated with Farsley AFC in their inaugural season. "We have followed the developments at Throstle Nest with interest over the last few months and recognise the work that is being put in to promote the new club. We wish Neil and his team the very best of luck for the season ahead". Russ Crowther, director of Sprtsbulk Suppliers was equally enthusiastic about his company's continued involvement with Farlsey. He said: "Our company has the privilege of supplying kits for a number of teams throughout the country, but, as all the family are Pudsey residents, it is particularly important for us to support our local team and we are delighted once again to offer our support to Farsley." Rachel Jolly-Walker of Red added: "We have been providing merchandise for the club for some time now, so it seemed a natural step for us to continue to promote our family run business by being more formally associated with Farsley AFC. "We are very pleased to have secured this agreement".

Around The Grounds The Welfare Ground - Nostell Miners Welfare FC

Town took a trip to Yorkshire for the start of the “Road to Wembley” in the FA Cup. The location was the small village of Nostell located just outside Wakefield. The club have been plying their trade in the Northern Counties East League since 2006 starting in life the First Division before progressing to the Premier Division the following season. The football club is part of the old Miners Welfare from the old Nostell pit (which is given away slightly by the name!) and the site, since renamed the Crofton

Community Centre, contains facilities for various sports including Rugby League, Bowling and the building itself is very modern and spacious. Upon arriving into the car park we were greeted by a coned off space for our coach and then made our way into the club house, we thought they had put an awesome welcome buffet on for us but quickly realised that there was to be a wedding reception in the massive function room and made our way towards the bar area. We found another decent sized room which housed a snooker table and a big screen showing the first action of the new Premier League season, (don’t ask committee member Andy Langley how he got on against me in our snooker contest!). The dressing room area is also in the same building and these are very spacious and modern with various teams using the numerous room and the half time hospitality for the committee and after match food for the players was provided in a large bright room opposite the bar. Upon entering the ground you find yourself up on high with the pitch and most of the viewing areas of the ground cut out in what looks like a bowl below you. The only seating area in the ground is a long thin covered stand off to your right upon entry and the remainder of the ground is uncovered hard standing area. Whilst the ground has an overall basic feel the seated stand is of a good quality and provides an excellent view of the match action and the ground is very neat and tidy. The whole site together is an excellent facility although £2.80 for a pint of Lager in the clubhouse is a bit steep!

Overall Score 7/10

All Our Yesterdays . . . St. Helens Town in the FA Vase This afternoon, St. Helens Town entertain Brodsworth Welfare in the First Qualifying Round of the FA Vase, a competition which Town won in 1986/87 at the first time of asking. The FA Vase is the FA’s premier national non-league competition for clubs at steps 5, 6 and 7 of the football pyramid. Winners for the last two seasons have been Whitley Bay. The final takes place at Wembley stadium in May 2011. Of more immediate consideration for today’s winners will be a home tie against either Cheadle Town or Worsborough Bridge Athletic on September 18 and the winners of that tie will be at home to either Abbey Hey or Oldham Boro on October 2 in the First Round proper. As stated above, Town won the FA Vase in 1987, defeating neighbours Warrington Town 3-2 in the Wembley final. In earlier rounds, St. Helens had accounted for Colne Dynamoes (who went on to win the Vase the following season), General Chemicals, Blackpool Wren Rovers, Guisborough, Wythenshawe Amateurs, Wisbech Town, Rainworth Miners Welfare, Falmouth Town in a replayed Quarter-Final and Emley over two legs in the Semi-Final. The following season, Town went out at the first attempt, Rainworth Miners Welfare gaining revenge in a Second Round Replay at Hoghton Road. Next time around, Town again bowed out in the Second Round, this time at Eastwood Hanley. St. Helens progressed to the Fourth Round in 1989/90, going down by the only goal to Farsley Celtic in a Second Replay at Hoghton Road. There then followed eight barren years before Town reached the Fourth Round again, meeting with a 0-1 defeat at Clitheroe, after accounting for Hall Road Rangers, Brigg Town, Morpeth and Eccleshill United. The intervening years saw only 4 wins, against Rossendale United, Eccleshill United, Ossett Town and Nettleham. The last campaign of the twentieth century saw another defeat, 1-4 at Selby Town. During the last decade, Town did quite well in the early years following the move to Knowsley Road, but have not won a single game since the 2005/06 season. Results have been as follows:

2000/01 Second Round Qual. Yorkshire Am. (a) 6-3 (aet) First Round Winterton R. (a) 3-2 (aet) Second Round Skelmersdale U. Enjoying some quality time together after their years in the White House, Bill and Hillary Clinton are driving through Little Rock, Arkansas. They are running low on fuel and pull into a convenient gas station to fill up. Hillary immediately recognises the attendant as a former high school sweetheart from years back, and mentions this to Bill. “Just think,” says Bill. “If you had married him instead of me, you would have been the wife of a gas station attendant, and not First Lady to the President of the United States.” Hillary smiles. “Bill, you poor thing” she says. “If I had married him, he would have become President.”

I had to part company with my masseur yesterday; he kept rubbing me up the wrong way. George W. Bush visits Israel and is on a walkabout in Jerusalem when he spots a very old man with a long, grey beard, dressed in dirty robes, and carrying a staff. George taps him on the shoulder. “Excuse me, but aren’t you Moses?” he asks. The old man ignores him, so George tries again, speaking louder. “Excuse me, aren’t you Moses?” Again the old man ignores him, so George tries a third time, even louder. “I said, aren’t you Moses?” By now very irritated, the old man finally responds. “Yes I am, damn you.” he snaps. “And the last I time I spoke to a flaming Bush, I spent the next forty years in the desert!” Heard about the pet hamster that died in tragic circumstances? It fell asleep at the wheel. Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson are on a hiking holiday in the Peak District and have set up camp for the night. Holmes looks up at the star-filled sky and comments, “Just look at that sky, Watson. What does it tell you?” Watson ponders for a moment or two then replies, “Well, Holmes, I can see that Orion is at its apex, from which I deduce it to be around 2.17am. The Great Bear is aligned with the Pole Star in the third quadrant, which would suggest we have set up camp at around 1500 feet. Venus is clearly visible, which means the temperature is probably no lower than 7 degrees centigrade, and from the direction of the wind on my face I would say we can look forward to a dry, clear morning as warmer weather blows in from the West.” Watson finishes his deduction and turns to Holmes. “Well, Holmes?” he asks, expectantly. “Am I correct, or am I not?” “Not, my dear Watson,” replies Holmes. “It tells you the bloody tents have blown away.” Compiled and edited by John Shepherd (Sheffield FC) with cartoon by Paula Shepherd. If you have any printable jokes you would like to share with your fellow supporters, please e-mail them to me on [email protected] Come on, let’s all have a laugh.
