2nd SUNDAY OF ADVENT

"Produce good fruit as evidence ofyour repentance." John the Baptist doesnot mince words. He tells it like it is.When the hypocritical Pharisees andSadducees show up piously for baptism,John calls them out, saying, "You broodof vipers!" Not welcoming words, to saythe least. Then he tells them that beingpart of the religious club (i.e., children ofAbraham) isn't enough. No, "every treethat does not bear good fruit will be cutdown and thrown into the fire."

It can be easy to join John inpointing fingers at those self-righteousreligious leaders. But we're usually notso quick to point fingers at ourselves. Onthis Second Sunday of Advent, as weseek to prepare for the coming of Christ,we also need to hear John's solemnwarning. How are we like thesePharisees? How have we excusedourselves because we are part of the"club," because we are baptizedChristians, regular churchgoers, betterthan others, or whatever justification weuse to declare ourselves in good shape?How have we failed to produce goodfruit by being satisfied with acomfortable life and a routine practice ofthe faith? What do we need to change?Where do we need to grow? How do weneed to reach out and serve others, tosacrifice sinful behaviors, to delvedeeper into our love for the Lord?

John preaches today that God will"gather his wheat into his barn, but thechaff he will burn with unquenchablefire." Advent is a gift from the Church--atime to renew our spiritual life by gettingrid of the chaff in our souls and producinginstead a fruitful harvest. Now is the timeto do this work. As John tells us, "Repent,for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!"

20 DOMINGO DE ADVIENTO

La figura y mensaje central de esteSegundo Domingo de Adviento es Juan

Bautista. Su llamada a la conversión y al

mismo tiempo su mensaje de la cercanía deDios es clave para entrar al Reino de loscielos. El significado de la conversión que élanuncia quiere decir abrirse a Dios y nodebe quedar reducida a un cambio deconducta minimizada tan solo paratranquilizar la conciencia. Para llegar a unaverdadera conversión debemos de vivirsintiendo que Dios está próximo y que debede prepararse el camino de abrirle paso yque sea el centro de nuestra vida. Preparares responsabilidad de todos ya que laconversión es personal y comunitaria. Elprofeta Isaías lo explica así: "Una voz clamaen el desierto: Preparen el camino delSeñor, enderecen sus senderos" (Mt 3, 3).

¿Es el Adviento tiempo de tensión onos lleva a buscar a Dios? Ahora es eltiempo de pedir el Espíritu de sabiduría,inteligencia, prudencia y valentía. No hayque dormirnos en nuestros laureles, estiempo de despertar, es tiempo de lucharpor la paz y la justicia. Teniendo siemprepresente que al tomar responsabilidad de mipropia conversión ya estoy comprometiendomi vida al encuentro con Dios. Entonces, noperdamos el tiempo en cosas pequeñas.Vamos a lo grande a dar fruto abundante delos dones que hemos recibido de Dios yadesde nuestro bautismo. No, nos vaya apasar que: "Ya el hacha está puesta a la raíz

de los árboles, y todo árbol que no dé fruto,será cortado y arrojado al fuego" (Mt 3, 10).iAl contrario, hacer ver con obras nuestraconversión! Es nuestra misión.

Our Lady of Guadalupe Feast— Mass at 6:00 amon Monday December 12th at Our Lady of Refugein La Union. Breakfast after the Mass in theParish Hall.

Symbolon -The December class is scheduledfor Saturday, December 17 at 9:00 am.

Saturday Mass_— Starting on January 7, the HolyMass will be offered in the chapel (at the Office),every first Saturday of the month at 7:00 am.

Christmas Poinsettias — Donations are beingrequested for the Altar. You can make adonation in honor of a loved one. Donationenvelopes are available after Mass or at theparish office.

Coat Drive — We will be having a coat & blanket

drive to collect items and take them to a shelter.

Starting Sunday, November 27, bring any items

you can donate and deposit in boxes by the

doors. If you have any questions please contact

Parish Posada -- We will be having our second

annual parish posada on December 18 from 4:00

to 7:00 pm. at the YMCA gym. We hope you

and your family can join us.

los articulos que pueda donar y depositelos en las
