Pastor’s Desk Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I remind everyone of our tri-parish Advent Penance Service with individual confessions which will take place at St. Mary’s in Dumont at 7:30pm tomorrow, Monday, December 19th. Priests from St. Mary’s, St. John’s, and Ascension will be on hand to hear your confession after a communal service.

+++

As Christmas falls on a Sunday this year, please note the revised schedule of Masses on next Saturday (Christmas Eve) and Sunday, (Christmas Day). Please try to encourage someone who doesn’t ordinarily attend Mass to join you for Christmas!

For our parish envelope users, please place both the Christmas envelope and the Sunday envelope in the one collection. Our parish counts on both Sunday collections and Holyday collections when planning our budget for the year. Thank you!

+++

As announced last month, Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R., of Indianapolis has been appointed by Pope Francis to be our new Archbishop, effective with his Mass of Installation at 2:30pm on Friday, January 6th, at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark. Doors will open that day at 11am. Seating will be on a first come – first served basis.

+++

A special thank you to all who helped with our Parish Giving Tree Project and supported our Food Pantry for Christmas. So many in need will have a brighter Christmas because of your thoughtfulness!

Msgr. Richard Arnhols, Pastor

Reflection on Today’s Readings

Joseph is one of the great examples in the Bible of what can happen when people cooperate with God. Even before the angel spoke to him, he had determined to protect Mary, at the risk of his own standing in the community. Simply on Mary’s testimony that she was “with child of the Holy Spirit” (Mt.1:18), Joseph trusted God and chose what he considered to be the safest path for the woman he had planned to make his wife. His trust was rewarded when the angel confirmed Mary’s words and told him that the child to be born was destined to save his people from sin. (1:21)

Joseph believed in God’s plan and worked to see it fulfilled; thus, the Messiah was born. The wonder and glory of all God’s promises came to fruition, in part through the cooperation of this humble and upright man. In a unique way, he anticipated St. Paul’s words that, through Christ, “we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name” (Romans 1:5). Joseph clearly demonstrated the “obedience of faith”; his simple trust in God showed that he was open to the grace God was pouring out on him.

In baptism, we too have received grace and apostleship. We have been called to the obedience of faith— not a slavish obedience of fear and anxiety, but an obedience based on love and simple trust. Like Paul and like Joseph, we are called to work with the Lord, to cooperate with him in his desire to bring all people into his kingdom. No matter how we may experience this call, we cannot remain passive. Rather, we are called to dedicate our whole being— body and soul—to the Lord’s work. As we cooperate with him, we—like Joseph—will see marvelous things take place.

The birth of Christ marks the dawning of our redemption. Let us heed the voice of the psalmist and let the Lord, the King of Glory, enter our hearts. Let us put aside sin and indifference and ask Christ, our King, to remove any obstacles that might hinder his coming in more fully. Let us take hold of the grace that is available to us.

Stewardship: Sharing our Time, Talent, and Treasure!

“When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took his wife into his home.” Matthew 1:24

Putting our complete trust in the Lord without expecting anything in return. Striving to put God first in all things and follow Him wherever He may lead us. As we prepare for the birth of our Lord, pray for the strength and courage to be a model of discipleship, just as Joseph was.
