Today is the Day of Resurrection! Alleluia! Let us rejoice! Jesus is Risen!

God is offering to the whole world the gift of eternal life through the death and resurrection of his Son, Jesus Christ. The love of God has removed our sinfulness and filled all creation with the glory of new life in Christ. For the majority of Catholics, we rejoice in this gift. In these difficult times of quarantine and social distancing, it can be hard to rejoice. So many people have been impacted in ways we have yet to realize. I have found that the more time and energy I spend being grateful for what I have makes the tough times easier to bear, especially when that gratitude is shared among family and friends. So we must make an effort to remind each other of our blessings and our hopes for the future. The alternative is to live in bitterness, fear and anger. One of the marks of someone who is bitter or angry is complaining. Jesus encountered this during his ministry and pointed it out.

Jesus said to the crowds: “To what shall I compare this generation? It is like children who sit in marketplaces and call to one another, ‘We played the flute for you, but you did not dance, we sang a dirge but you did not

mourn.’ For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they said, ‘He is possessed by a demon.’ The Son of Man came eating and drinking and they

said, ‘Look, he is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’ But wisdom is vindicated by her works.” (Matthew 11:16-19)

We cannot allow ourselves to be so overwhelmed by the times that we lose sight of the blessings. We are not without hope. We have the promise of resurrection and eternal life. We also need to surround ourselves with people who choose joy over bitterness. May we guard against bitterness and complaining. Let us instead embrace the joy and life of Easter.

CHANGES DURING THE

COVID-19 VIRUS PANDEMIC

Father Joe will continue to celebrate private Mass every day in the small chapel in the connector at St. Leo’s in Tyndall. THIS IS A PRIVATE MASS, NOT OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. St. Leo Church will be open for private prayer and adoration of Jesus in the tabernacle every day from 8am to 8pm. THERE MAY NOT BE GROUP GATHERINGS FOR PRAYER IN THE CHURCH. Religious Education, all Knights of Columbus meetings, choir practice and other group activities or meetings are cancelled until further notice. The bless palms for both parishes may be picked up only at St. Leo in Tyndall. These will be on a table in the connector. Once we get a better indication of how long this will last, we will again schedule events as the CDC and our bishop permit.

PARISH FINANCIAL NEEDS DURING THIS QUARANTINE

Our parishes still have obligations such as salaries & benefits, insurance payments, utilities and other regular expenses like any family. Since we will not have any weekly collections, we are asking each household to

contribute via US Mail or some form of electronic payment. The diocese will soon be giving parishes online resources to make this easier to do.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

DURING THIS CRISIS

As Father Joe indicated our parish has an emergency fund to assist families and individuals who may need rent assistance or utility payments. Such assistance is paid directly to the landlord or company, not the individual or family requesting help. Simply call Father Joe at 605-589-3504.

Changes in Light of the

Suspension of Public Masses Suspending public Masses and public events that are parish and diocesan-sponsored comes with many ramifications. The following list clarifications is offered specifically for the Diocese of Sioux Falls. This list is subject to amendment and revision with time and as Bishop DeGrood gathers more insights from pastors and parish experiences. Personal Prayer in Church Buildings/Chapels

• Where it is the local custom, church buildings may remain open during the day for private prayer and devotion at the discretion of the pastor.

Televised Masses

• The Diocese-sponsored Sunday TV Mass will continue to be prayed and broadcast via television and via online streaming.

• Similarly, local pastors and staff may develop means by which private Masses prayed in parish churches can be broadcast to parishioners.

Funerals

• Masses of Christian Burials may be prayed with only immediate family members present. The funerals should still honor the guideline of having only 10 persons present. Wakes may not be prayed in Catholic facilities.

*In the event of a death, Memorial Masses can be prayed after this temporary suspension has been lifted. Other Sacraments

• Baptisms are permissible outside of the context of Holy Mass and at the pastor’s discretion. Care need be taken to limit the size of the gathering and to include additional precautions such as using holy water that is blessed especially for the one person receiving the sacrament.

• Confirmations and First Holy Communions scheduled through April, 2020 will be rescheduled.

• Confessions may be heard in parishes. Pastors have been encouraged to publish times when they are available. This provision is made with the expectation that additional precautions for avoiding the spread of the virus are in place at the parishes while at the same time the seal essential to the Sacrament is safeguarded.

• Lenten communal penances are to be cancelled.

• Weddings that have been scheduled may still be celebrated. However, only the priest/deacon, bride, groom, witnesses for both, and five additional people may attend.

Happy Easter! We prayed, fasted and gave alms—and now we celebrate the Risen Lord! Our Lenten journey with CRS Rice Bowl challenges us as we begin the Easter season to share what we have with our global family. Don’t forget to turn in your CRS Rice Bowl at the front of St. Leo the Great Church in Tyndall or drop at Mr. Golf Car in Springfield by April 27th.

A Family Perspective By Bud Ozar Today’s gospel instructs us Jesus “had to rise from the dead.” The dying we experience with unmet expectations in marriage and parenting is normal to family life. Families must rise above disappointments and be Easter people all year long.

2020 CFSA Our 2020 parish CFSA goal for St. Leo’s is $29,000 and St. Vincent’s is $9,000. Currently we have reached 84.80% of our goal at St. Leo and 60.33% at St. Vincent. Thank you to all who have generously made contributions to this year’s collection. If you

have not yet contributed, will you join our parish family in sharing a portion of the blessings God has entrusted to you? With your help we can reach our goal. Remember all amounts received above our goal will remain in the parish. St. Leo St. Vincent Total $24,593.00 Total $5,430.00 Paid $21,313.00 Paid $4,540.00 Pledged $ 3,280.00 Pledged $ 890.00
