In the ancient Roman calendar the celebration of Saturnalia, named after the god, Saturn, came on December 25. The intention was to generate some energy to get people through the winter. It may be why so many parties have developed in northern cultures during the winter months. In any case, we can safely assume that human beings do not hibernate, so we need to stay active. Think of all the winter sports that have developed to that end: skiing, hockey, skating, broomball, sledding, ice fishing, curling, the Iditarod and even polar plunges. The Swedish Sauna was invented to take advantage of the cold, making people stronger and more disease resistant. Even special drinks are part of this winter effort in the form of eggnog, peppermint schnapps, hot cocoa & cider and fruit-flavored brandies. Holiday foods also add to the list of winter activities with fruitcakes, lefsa, sugar cookies, gingerbread, chocolate yule logs and honey baked ham. For many people, these are some of the things that make winter their favorite season of the year. Christmas is only a week away, bringing with it loads of traditions, activities, travel and so much more. May it also be a time of rediscovering a deeper faith in Jesus Christ, the true Reason for the Season. Take time to snuggle under a warm blanket and read the Christmas Story again. Remember, God’s will for us is to be wrapped in the warmth of his love. Whatever you do during the days ahead, never forget that gift. Third Sunday of Advent

This week on Thursday, the winter season officially begins. It is the day of the least daylight hours and marks the start of increasing sunlight. In the ancient Roman calendar the celebration of Saturnalia, named after the god, Saturn, came on December 25. The intention was to generate some energy to get people through the winter. It may be

why so many parties have developed in northern cultures during the winter months.

Whatever you do during the days ahead, never forget that gift.

incorporate the winter season and scriptures. A short introduction and meditation will start the class. Cost: $20 (provide at time of class) Contact: PR by Jan. 15 for planning purposes; Call: 668-6000 or Email: shmpublicrelations@ mtmc.edu for questions.

A Family Perspective by Bud Ozar Today’s gospel reports “there is one

among you whom you do not recognize.” It is

hard to believe Christ is present in a family with

crazy schedules, suppers that start too late and end

too early, cars that don’t start, misunderstandings,

frustrations, piles of laundry, unmatched socks and stretched food

budgets. The list is endless. The words spoken at Mass, “The

Lord is with you,” are not a hope, they are a fact.
