DREAMS DO COME TRUE…. May 6th and 7th Page Three

Oh, what a night. No, it was not late December back in ‘63 but rather last Friday night at our Karaoke Night. It was a night of great fun, talent, and a plethora of songs and styles that were entertaining and spirit filled. It was clear that those in attendance had a wonderful time and that those who had planned and hosted the night did something wonderful and fun for the parish. Thanks to the members of the Knights of Columbus who worked hard on this event. When these events are planned we are never sure if people will participate as there is always so many other things going on for us. However, the plan is always to make it a good experience for those who are able to come. The bonus of these events is the joy of knowing that a person with a particular dream can come to fulfill that dream. It is humbling to be part of any dream coming to reality. Such was part of the experience of Friday night. Kevin Dempsey, our current Grand Knight, mentioned that he had a dream spanning many years. He told me he wanted to be a Pip. Apparently this is something that he had made known to his family, friends, and even to his professional colleagues over many years. Not being as familiar as others with the desire to be a Pip, I googled Wikipedia there and then, ah the advantages of technology, and found the following: Gladys Knight and the Pips were an R&B/soul family musical act from Atlanta, Georgia that remained active on the music charts and performing circuit for three decades. Starting out as simply The Pips in 1952, derived from a cousin's nickname, the founding members were Gladys Knight, brother Merald "Bubba" Knight, sister Brenda Knight and cousins William and Eleanor Guest. Then I understood that Kevin dreamed of being a part of this act as one of the back up singers. I am delighted to tell you that Kevin’s dream came true right here under the bright lights of our Karaoke Night. With Amy O’ Mullan taking the microphone to sing “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” she was flanked by her Pips, Kevin Dempsey, Tim Wallisch and Michael Wizeman, who sang and danced their hearts out. Not a dry eye was left in that place as we watched one man’s dream be borne into reality. Oh, what a night, indeed. Special thanks to Randa Wallisch and Laurie Dempsey who provided such delicious food and were responsible for the ambiance which reflected the development of music styles and fashions through various eras. The efforts of all who helped were greatly appreciated. If you missed it don’t worry—it will be back again in the not too distant future.

On Saturday of last week our teenagers, who are to be Confirmed on Wednesday of this week, were on retreat. Bishop Serratelli is scheduled to be here on Wednesday for the Mass at 7:30 PM. All parishioners are invited to come. Please keep them in your prayers that they will continue to walk in the way of Jesus. There are so many challenges and spiritual battles surrounding our youth that the decision to be a disciple of Jesus can be a daunting task which is why they need our prayer and example. This weekend we had the joy of bringing our First Communicants to the mystical union which Christ offers us in Holy Communion. Again, I ask your prayers for them and, most especially, for their parents that they will be faithful to their promise to bring their children to know and love Jesus. Sadly, while many come to First Holy Communion, there is an alarming drop off when it comes to the Sunday to Sunday journey with Jesus. I firmly believe that our prayer and the encouragement of their parents will help them to come to know how essential our communion with Jesus at Mass is.

As mentioned in this column last weekend I am, God willing, going to Fatima this week, Thursday, May 11th, for the 100th Anniversary Celebrations. I expect to receive the credentials (it’s a process of submitting your id and other information to be officially included) from the Shrine in Fatima before leaving on Thursday in order that I can be admitted to concelebrate the Papal Mass on Saturday the 13th in which Pope Francis will declare Blessed Jacinta and Francisco to be Saints. From the first time I visited Fatima, and after each visit since then, I had hoped that I could return for the 100th Anniversary. I am so grateful to have this opportunity. I am happy to carry your prayer intentions with me. If you have specific ones feel free to write them out and drop them off to me before Wednesday. I will bring them with me and place them at the Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima on your behalf.

Peace, Fr. Richard

READINGS FOR NEXT SUNDAY First Reading: Acts 6:1‑7 During the early growth of the Church, the apostles realized that they needed more disciples in order to carry out effectively the ministry of the Church. The community selected seven men, one of whom was Stephen. Second Reading: 1 Peter 2:4‑9 Citing many uses of the word “stone” in the sayings of Jesus and in the Old Testament, Peter urges the Christians to be “living stones...an edifice of spirit.” Gospel: John 14:1-12 In this beautiful passage from the words of Jesus at the Last Supper, Jesus promises that he is preparing a place for the apostles. He tells them, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through me.” When Philip asks Jesus to show them the Father, Jesus answers, “Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.”

PETER’S PENCE COLLECTION NEXT WEEKEND

Dear Friends in Christ, This month, parishes throughout our Diocese will take up the annual Peter’s Pence Collection. Our participation in this special collection assists in the charitable work of our Holy Father as he reaches out to those who are marginalized and struggling around the globe. By supporting this collection, the Church is able to support victims of war, natural disasters, and other difficult situations. Let us join with our Catholic brothers and sisters in the Paterson Diocese and be a beacon of hope to those suffering in the world. I ask you to please be as generous as possible when this collection is taken up in your parish. Faithfully yours in Christ,
