Greetings and prayers dear brothers and sisters in Christ. Welcome to our celebration of the Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. Last week in this space we started publishing Bishop Lynch’s reflections on the upcoming Episcopal Transition – which is the term used for the selection of a new Bishop. Before continuing with that particular piece, it is more timely to present some excerpts from Bishop Lynch’s 75th birthday homily which is of the same theme, and as well his letter sent to Pope Francis. This is being written in real time but keep in mind that due to cut-off dates, these pieces usually do not come to print until two weeks after writing. He titled his homily “So Now We Wait.”

“Today marks only the beginning of the end of my service as Bishop of the Diocese of St. Petersburg. It is not the end. That moment comes when my successor who will be the fifth bishop is installed at the Cathedral of St. Jude the Apostle. But today is still a special moment and I sign the letter to Pope Francis asking to be allowed to retire as required by Canon Law and I thank him for the incredible privilege of serving this terrific local Church. … This morning I woke up with the same battle of heart and mind. The mind said, ‘Enough is enough and it is time for me to rest and another to lead, be creative, take this local Church to a new level of coming to experience the presence of the Lord.’ But my heart said, how can I leave my collaborators in ministry, my priests and deacons and religious women and men, my seminarians, my schools and faith formation leaders and teachers? I love them too much! If you know me as well as I think you do, you know that while I am relieved, I am not entirely happy. I cried when in July of 1984 I drove out of the gates of St. John Vianney College seminary in Miami to begin my new assignment in Washington. I cried all the way to Hollywood that day but no one was in the car to witness it. … If you get the picture, it is that I do not handle major change and the fondest of good-byes well. … Today is not the time for tears. Work continues unabated. You will see that I will be very reluctant to begin new major initiatives or to spend new monies. If the transition were to take place tomorrow, the new bishop would inherit a great diocese made up of talent and treasure – probably the best in Florida and maybe even in the country. We have accomplished something beautiful for God in the last two decades. … Rarely disappointed and forever grateful, I cannot thank you enough. … So today for this local Church the clock of expectation and hope starts to tick. We are like that parable in the Gospel waiting for the bridegroom knowing neither the day, hour or time of his arrival. But today we start to pray for him and he will remain in our expectation, hope and prayers until he comes. ... Thanks and God Bless all of you.” If you would like to read his letter in its entirety, it is posted on his blog.

Following is Bishop Lynch’s letter sent to His Holiness, Pope Francis:

Most Holy Father, Having reached today my seventy-fifth birthday, I hereby wish to submit to you my request to retire as ordinary of the Diocese of the St. Petersburg in accordance with Canon 401.1 of the Code of Canon Law. It has been an incomparable privilege to have served the clergy, religious and laity of this diocese for more than twenty years. I shall always be grateful to Saint John Paul II for extending to me this wonderful pastoral office. My successor whom you shall choose will be inheriting a healthy, vibrant and growing local Church and he shall have my total support. With grateful thanks to Almighty God for giving me the joy of sharing the Gospel with others during your exciting and wonderful pontificate and promising my prayers for you always, I am Faithfully yours in Christ, Most Reverend Robert N. Lynch, Bishop of St. Petersburg.

Remember next week is Father’s Day. Wishing all a week filled with God, His Love and Mercy. ~ Father Paul

God’s Expectations of Us

Life-changing introspection hinges on a single question:

What does God want from me? Once you know what

God expects, you can take the necessary steps to respond.

The answer to this question is found in Matthew 22:37,

when Jesus answered the Pharisees’ question, “Teacher,

which commandment in the law is the greatest?” In

reply, Jesus said “You shall love the Lord, your God, with

all your heart, with all your soul, and with all you mind.

This is the greatest and the first commandment. The

second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as

yourself. The whole law and the prophets depend on

these two commandments.”

The answer is simple, yet very challenging. Jesus isn’t

talking about the “emotion” of love. He’s not talking

about loving “feelings” that ebb and flow depending on

circumstances and mood. He’s talking about the

“practice” of love. He’s talking about demonstrating a

deep and abiding concern for others through self-

sacrificial, loving action.

If we want to embrace God’s expectations for our lives

we can get started by reading the Bible to see how God

interacts with his people—from Abraham and Joseph to

David and Mary, the mother of Jesus. Focus on how God

makes himself known to individuals, how he gives them

what they need for the tasks at hand, how he provides

opportunities to use their gifts and abilities and how he

responds to their doubts and setbacks.

Renew Your Wedding Vows - June 18 & 19th A communal renewal of wedding vows can be very meaningful and touching for the couples, their family

members and the Parish family and friends. As a married couple it gives you time to pause and reflect on where you have been and where you are going. It would be a wonderful example for your children and grand children, especially if they are present for the occasion. Try to bring your family and friends for the Mass you plan to attend for the Father's Day weekend. The vows will be renewed at all the weekend Masses. Please prepare for it by reflecting on it as individually and together as a couple. Let not your love wither or die. Give a chance for the your love to ripen.

Almighty and all loving God, Eternal Shepherd and Guide, we are grateful for Bishop

Lynch and his twenty years of ministry in our diocese.

During this time of transition, we trust in Your love, confident that You will once again give to the Diocese of St. Petersburg a shepherd who will inspire us to be Christ’s heart of mercy, His voice of hope and hands of justice.

Guide our new bishop to enlighten our hearts and minds with the truth of the Gospel, the power of the sacraments, and the desire to serve you in all things.

We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

HOPE AND LIFE ?

Today’s readings tell the story of two widows. The first reading relates the plight of the widow with whom the prophet Elijah stayed; the Gospel tells about the widow of Nain. In each story, the widow’s only son had died. For people who lived in those cultures, the son was the only support of a widow, and the carrying on of the family name by the son was equal to immortality. A widow whose only son has died could lose all hope. Elijah and Jesus are the restorers of hope; they bring the sons back to life. Saint Paul was metaphorically raised from the dead when he experienced the conversion and call from God that he describes in today’s second reading. What are Christians called to do today? We may not be able to raise the dead, but perhaps we can rekindle hope for a single parent. We may not be able to convert a persecutor like Paul, but if we speak the gospel openly and gently with our lives, we might touch a life with the Good News.
