CATHOLIC YOUTH CAMP 2018

ANNUAL DIOCESAN APPEAL

Many thanks to our parishioners who have already made a pledge for the Annual Diocesan Appeal. Our goal is $53,961 and we have already received $45,159 in pledges from 136 out of our 520 registered families (27%). Please continue to pray for the success of the appeal. If you haven’t already made your pledge, please consider a gift of any size. Our goal is 100 percent participation! Funds from the appeal provide service and ministry to thousands of individuals across our faith community. Annual operating expenses that cover priest medical insurance, health care, and retirement benefits are included as well as education for seminarians. The ADA supports our Catholic schools, religious education, marriage and family ministry, Hispanic ministry, diaconate formation, Catholic Charities and many more diocesan-wide initiatives.

April Pastoral Council Summary

Several songs by Cedar Rapids Xavier High School’s Voce Chamber Choir served as the opening prayer. Committee updates were reviewed. For Old Business, a new smoking and vaping policy was approved and 2017 Pasta Dinner funds were approved to be allocated to a convection oven and an informational to set-up for the Narthex while other kitchen equipment needs were tabled for next meeting pending additional costing. There was a great turnout at the Meat Feast. Reminders for name tag weekends (first weekends of the month) were discussed. The Diocese is working on security and safety and a parishioner is on that committee; more updates to come. In New Business, a letter writing campaign for Bread for the World was discussed as well as lead commitments for the capital campaign; hearing assistance for Mass; and new parish positions. Prayer closed the meeting. May 10th at 7PM is the next meeting.

GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE

April 22, 2018 4th Sunday of Easter

Today's Gospel occurs in the middle of Jesus' ministry. At first, Jesus' words seem to be about the value of self-sacrifice in a leader. "I am the Good Shepherd ? I will lay down my life for the sheep." The Apostles likely would have accepted these words easily enough. But then comes something more strange. "I lay down my life in order to take it up again ? I have power to lay it down and power to take it up again." Only later, when Jesus opened the Scriptures to them after his resurrection, would the Apostles understand his words. Only then would they understand why such an act was necessary for the salvation of the world.

Even now, we may struggle with the necessity of Holy Week. How often do we hear complaints against the silence of God, as if He is the "hired man" who "runs away" from suffering? Jesus' life, death, and resurrection is our redemption in fact.

God himself bears the full weight of sin's consequences. The Paschal Mystery is also a sign that happens in full view of the human experience. We have seen Jesus lay down his life. We have seen him accompany others. "I know mine and mine know me." We have seen him reach those outside the traditional flock, "sheep not of this fold." Jesus is the Good Shepherd, not only in Scripture but in our daily lives.

While we can't experience physically walking alongside him like the Apostles did, the grace of our redemption continues through the Church. We are shepherded by the sacraments, by faith formation, by good mentors. At the same time, we are not only the sheep. In imitating Jesus, we, too, are invited to lay down our lives for others. We can be the hands, feet, and shepherd's crook of Christ.

First Communion Masses: Sunday, April 29, at 1:00 pm and Sunday, May 6, at 1:00 pm at St. Luke’s.

SUMMER HAPPENINGS – REGISTER NOW! Vacation Bible School at St. Luke’s: June 4-8, 9:00 am-12:00 pm

Children who will be in grades K-5 this fall, come join Daniel, who is torn from his home and forced into the king’s service, on a faith-filled adventure. You’ll explore exotic sights and smells in a Babylonian bazaar! Through this exciting VBS, you’ll find that you’re not much different from Daniel and his friends, who kept their faith in a faithless culture. Register online at www.slte.org (there is currently a waiting list).

High School Colorado Conference and Retreat: June 22-26

There is still room for any students who will be in high school this fall (or who are graduating this year) to come with us for a 2-day youth conference in Colorado followed by a 2-day retreat in the mountains. The “Steubenville of the Rockies” conference is an amazing way to be re-energized in your faith with great speakers, music, and time with God (and a thousand of your new closest friends). Contact Pete or see www.slte.org for more information. Space is limited!

"Scan the code or go to www.slte.org/give to sign up for Online Giving!"

Phase II includes the following:

· Expansion of our current worship space (just north of the altar) that will also double as two larger meeting rooms

· 10 additional classrooms for our school and RE program

· Multipurpose room

· Three school offices

· Commons area

· Doubling our current parking spaces

We will not borrow any more money to complete Phase II of our long-range plan. Once we know how much money we will raise in our campaign, we will outline our plan more completely. Below is our list of priorities:

· The first $1.5 million will be spent on the school expansion. We will be able to construct four classrooms and three offices.

· The next $1.1 million will be spent on the church extension adding overflow room north of the altar that will double as meeting rooms, and we will add 80 addition parking spots.

· Every dollar over $2.6 million will be spent on completing Phase II of our planned school expansion and fulfilling our parking needs.

The Capital Campaign Steering Committee has set a parish campaign goal of $1.5 million. Don and Charlene Lamberti are offering to match every dollar raised by the parish up to $1 million.
