A Note from the Administrator...

P. Mike

Una nota del Administrador...

Dear Friends,

This Monday US Catholic parishes offer daily Mass for legal protec on of unborn children. Everyone knows our Church considers abor on a grave sin against God’s gi of life. Fewer realize that Catholic teaching against capital punishment of criminals is becoming almost as strong. Pope Francis says: “Nowadays the death penalty is unacceptable, however grave the crime of the convicted person …. It does not render jus ce to vic ms, but instead fosters vengeance. The commandment ‘Thou shalt not kill’ has absolute value and applies both to the innocent and to the guilty.” The Catholic Catechism teaches: Preserving the common good of society requires rendering the transgressor unable to inflict (further) harm. Assuming that the guilty party’s iden ty and responsibility have been fully determined, the tra-di onal teaching of the Church does not exclude recourse to the death penalty, IF this is the only possible way of effec-

vely defending (further) human lives. If, however, non-lethal means are sufficient to defend and protect people’s safety, … authority will limit itself to such means, as these are more in keeping the concrete condi ons of the com-mon good and more in conformity with the dignity of the human person. It’s becoming more and more apparent that Catholics are not free to pick and choose which lives are sacred and which aren’t. All human life, even unworthy sullied lives of terrible criminals, is sacred … and people should be given every chance to repent and turn to God. Peace, All Good! Fr. Mike
