News from Father Todd

Question of the Week Dear friends,

Thank you to everyone who participated in last Sunday’s Golf Outing. It was a perfect day for golf and a great fundraiser for our Men’s Club that supports so many parish and school activi-ties. Special thanks to Mark Maloney who chaired this year’s event and to all who helped organize the outing. Thank you also to Valle

Vista Golf Club for the hosting the event. We have two special opportunities to proclaim and live the Gospel of Life in the coming weeks. Sunday, September 27, we will hold our Annual Blood Drive. The gift of blood is the gift of life. Parishioners Sandy and Ed Balint came to know the truth of this when a blood transfusion saved the life of their young son, A.J. That transfusion was made possible by a blood donor that the Balint’s will never know but to whom they will be eternally grateful. To help provide the mira-cle of life for others, the Balint’s have organized an Annual Blood Drive at St. Mark. All who are able to give blood are encouraged to do so and to be part of the miracle that a donation of blood makes possible. Sign-ups for the Blood Drive will take place after all of the Masses this weekend. Sunday, October 4, is Respect Life Sunday. Archbishop Tobin will celebrate a special Mass for the Protection of Human Life at the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul at 1:00 p.m. A Life Chain will form on North Meridian Street from 2:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. Those who form the Life Chain spend an hour in quiet prayer standing in public witness to the value of all human life. Saint Mark parishioners are assigned a two block area of North Meridian Street. I pray that many more parishioners than in past years will make the effort to be a part of the Life Chain. Please mark October 4th on your calendars and give the Life Chain the importance it deserves. I believe that this year’s Life Chain takes on special importance in view of the revelation of the atrocities taking place in Planned Parenthood Clinics. Body parts of aborted babies are callously har-vested and prices are negotiated casually over dinner and wine. The general response to this illegal trafficking has been, by in large, one of apathy. A more insidious and appalling response has been the attempt to bring charges against those who uncovered the atrocities rather than those committing them!

In light of this, I believe that the public witness we give through the Life Chain is essential this year. A sketchy and poorly-formed Life Chain tells the world around us that life is disposable and that nas-cent human life has no intrinsic value in itself other than the price placed on the organs that make up that life. A well-attended Life Chain witnesses to the value of all human life. How beautiful it would be to see our parish community not only standing shoulder to shoulder, but also two to three deep in this year’s Life Chain. Fami-lies are encouraged to stand together and for those for whom stand-ing for an hour will be physically difficult, please bring a chair. See you at Mass – and at the Life Chain!

Q. It was announced last week that Pope Francis has changed the Church’s teaching on annulments. Can he do?

A. Pope Francis issued two Apostolic Letters September 8th that will streamline the annulment process currently followed in the Catholic Church. The Pope issued the letters motu proprio which is Latin for ‘on one’s own initiative’. The Pope did not change the teaching of the Church on annulments but rather streamlined the process by which people apply for an annulment. An annulment is a finding by a Church court that a marriage at the time the consent was given through the exchange of vows was missing something essential that was necessary for a sacramental bond to take place. An annulment is a declaration that from the very beginning the bond never took place. The annulment finds that the necessary freedom, knowledge or human maturity to make the lifelong commitment of marriage was missing to such a degree that the sacred bond, often in spite of the best intentions of the two people, never took place. In that case the parties are free, after adequate preparation and prayer, to enter into a true sacramental marriage. Pope Francis’ Apostolic Letters do not change the Church’s under-standing of the Sacrament of Marriage or of annulments. Rather, the Letters call for a streamlining of the process by which annul-ments are governed. Following last October’s Synod on the Fami-ly, the Pope reflected on the bishops’ request that that process be studied and simplified. Through the Letters issued on September 8th Pope Francis responded to that desire of the bishops. Among the changes that will go into effect on December 8, which marks the beginning of the Year of Mercy, is the removal of any fees associated with the annulment process. Dioceses have tradi-tionally asked persons to contribute toward the costs incurred by the Church associated with the annulment process. Pope Francis asks that there be no fees associated with annulments. Often times people thought that they could not ‘afford’ an annulment process or, worse yet, that one could ‘buy’ an annulment. By re-moving any and all fees the Pope wants to remove both mistaken ideas.

The Pope also changes a procedure by which a decision of one diocese regarding an annulment must automatically be studied and ratified by another diocese. Should a decision reached by the Tribunal or Church Court be appealed, it will no longer have to go to Rome but rather to the nearest Archdiocese. These changes could potentially shorten the time for receiving a decision regarding the validity of one’s marriage by months or even years. The intent of the Pope is to streamline the process by which mar-riages are studied by the Church and decisions reached regarding the validity of a marriage. It is within the context of charity that Pope Francis issued the Apostolic Letters that will now govern the way the Church undertakes the pastoral work of its tribunals.

Saint Meinrad seminary and School of Theology has a long history of service to the Archdiocese of Indianapolis. In fact, 116 active and retired priests of the Archdiocese (including Archbishop Emeritus Daniel Buechlein, OSB), 41 permanent deacons, 19 religious, and 655 lay people are alumni of Saint Meinrad. For 160 years, Saint Meinrad’s monks have served the Catholic Church through their prayer and work. Their seminary program offers students excellent spiritual and academic preparation for the priesthood. Additionally, the Lay Degree Program offers master’s-level theology courses for men and women. Saint Meinrad’s Permanent Deacon Formation Program provides individual dioceses with academic and spiritual formation for their deacon candidates. Retreats are also available for individuals or small groups. For young people, the “One Bread, Once Cup” summer liturgical leadership conferences at Saint Meinrad offer the chance to learn about their faith and develop new skills they can use in their parish-es. You can be part of this important work. The monks of Saint Meinrad Archabbey encourage you to pray for vocations to the priesthood and religious life. They ask for your financial support and partner-ship to continue this work of serving the Church. You will be receiving a brochure and letter from Archabbot Justin describing the work of Saint Meinrad. Please respond as generous-ly as you can.
