My dear family of St. Matthew!

It’s so exciting for me to present to you this week the vocation story of St. Matthew’s very own parishioner, Deacon Senovio Sarabia, who is less than a month away from Ordination to the Priesthood! Read below Dcn. Senovio’s first of two installments which he shares with us about his life’s journey thus far. He is one of seven “transitional Deacons” who will be ordained to the Priesthood at a livestreamed Ordination Mass in our Cathedral Church of St. Raymond Nonnatus in Joliet on June 20, 2020. You can find more information on our Diocese of Joliet website regarding this Ordination and the seven men being ordained to the priesthood (copy this: http://www.dioceseofjoliet.org/vocations/sectioncontent.php?secid=31, and then click on any picture of the men being ordained to learn more about any one of them).

Please enjoy this opportunity below to reflect on the experiences Dcn. Senovio shares about the call he received from God, as together with his six spiritual deacon-brothers in the Lord, he prepares for ordination to the Priesthood at our Cathedral. God-willing, after his ordination, Dcn. Senovio soon-to-be-Father Senovio will be moving (July 1, 2020) into his new three-year priestly assignment at St. Mary Immaculate Parish, Plainfield — and you may also recall from last week that Dcn. Peter soon-to-be-Father Peter Infanger will be moving “right up the street almost literally” to St. Walter Parish, Roselle, that same first day of July as well.

Last week in the bulletin, I shared with you a beautiful prayer I had come across for vocations composed originally by Servant of God Bishop Guglielmo Giaquinta (1914-1994) — please continue to pray with me that Prayer for Vocations to Consecrated Life, or any other prayer of your choosing, and in particular, please carry in your prayerful heart our seven candidates preparing for their Ordination to the Ministerial Priesthood of our Lord Jesus Christ, who is alive and risen from the dead, and giving us His risen life through the power of the Holy Spirit! Alleluia! Alleluia!

In the living, loving, giving and caring Hearts of Jesus and Mary, Fr. Gregor

My Vocation Story by Deacon Senovio Sarabia

Hello friends of St. Matthew Parish!

Growing up I went to Mass for only two reasons, Jesus and the jelly donuts. I can

assure you I was never bored at Mass. Towards the end of my senior year in high

school I had a powerful reconciliation experience at St Matthew’s where I then

started taking my faith more serious. Not only did I start praying more but I would

find myself attending daily Mass and sharing this new joy with my friends.

This was my way of asking for God’s intercession to help me in my studies as a

college student and for my childhood dream of wanting to become a professional soccer player one day. The more I

went to Mass the more the desire for priesthood would spring in my heart.

There was a friend of mine in one of my classes whom I was very attracted

to because of her pursuit of holiness, and one day, out of the blue she told

me she thought I would make a great priest. This bugged me for a while

because I was already thinking about it but never really expressed this to

God. Therefore, as I continued going to Mass, I would ask Jesus what it was

that he wanted me to be and if it be his will that I be a priest then so be it.

The desire for priesthood grew immensely for the next four months until I

came across a video that motivated me to step out of my comfort zone and take a leap of faith. The YouTube video I

came across chronicled the story of a former professional soccer player (Fr. Chase Hilgenbrinck) who decided to leave

his pro career behind to become a priest. I felt an incredible amount of peace well up inside of me and later that day I

called the diocesan vocations director to talk about my desire to enter the seminary.

Looking back, I’m realizing that my parents, Fr. Herman, Fr. Kevin Lafey, and St. Matthew’s former

youth minister, Ruben Chavez were my biggest spiritual heroes. Ruben Chavez was one of the first

guys outside of my family who I saw was really passionate about his family and his faith unlike

anyone I’ve known. His testimony of his relationship with Jesus inspired me to go deeper in my faith.

Now, I’m only a couple weeks from being Ordained a Priest and I can’t wait to see what God has in

store for me and you, the people of God.

God bless you, Deacon Senovio Sarabia Jr.

Memorial Day already!

Fly your flags and display all things patriotic. It will bolster our spirits as we move closer to some type of “reopening.”

Thought for the Week Have your tools ready, and God will give you work. Memorial Day Remember all who served and those who gave their all.

An Act of Spiritual Communion

My Jesus,

I believe that You are present in the

Most Holy Sacrament.

I love You above all things,

and I desire to receive You into my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment receive You

sacramentally,

come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace You as if You were already there

and unite myself wholly to You.

Never permit me to be separated from You.

Amen.

ASCENSION

O God of earth and sky, as Jesus came among us in Bethlehem to raise us up to heaven, so today we recall his departing from us at Jerusalem to be in all places. Though he is hidden from our sight, enable us to abide in him by the power and grace of the Holy Spirit, until his mercy and grace fill your whole creation. Amen. Parishes of The Diocese of Joliet Phased Re-Opening May 13, 2020 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY This document is an Executive Summary of the multi-phased protocols and procedures, known as THE PLAN, for reopening churches and resuming public participation in the sacramental life of the Church for the Catholic dioceses in Illinois. The full Plan is provided at the end of this Executive Summary. The Plan has been developed by the bishops of the Chicago Province in consultation with and the approval of state and local public health officials and civil authorities. Four guiding principles undergird the multi-phased Plan: 1. Everything possible should be done to provide people the

solace of the church’s sacramental life in a timely and reasonable way.

2. The current situation in Illinois remains dangerous and fragile. While much has been achieved, there remains the potential that the gains could be lost by a second more virulent wave.

3. Trust needs to be established that the top priority in any Plan is the safety and wellbeing of our parishioners. We cannot take for granted that people will return just because churches are reopened.

4. Calling people to exercise faithful citizenship will be key. Each Catholic will need to take personal responsibility for the common good as well as their own safety. With these principles in mind, a Plan to prudently and gradually resume the full scope of public sacramental celebrations, liturgies and faith practices, has been designed. The Plan envisions a set of required measures and phases. There will be an ongoing review of the Plan so that adjustments are made in accord with new data. Read the entire basics of the Plan on our website at: www.stmatthewchurch.org.

Important information regarding the Sacrament of Confession When the Sacrament of Confession is not readily available, and when the individual faithful find themselves in the painful impossibility of receiving sacramental absolution, it should be remembered that perfect contrition – coming from the love of God, beloved above all things, expressed by a sincere request for forgiveness and accompanied by the promise to confess when the opportunity returns – obtains forgiveness of sins, even mortal ones (please see the Catechism, no. 1452).
