St. Maximilian Kolbe, pray for us! Fr. Lawrence W. Jozwiak Pastor

August 8, 2021 Dear Friends in Christ,

Who is St. Maximilian Kolbe, our parish patron? It is important for all of us to know his story. Raymund Kolbe was born on January 8, 1894 in Zdunska Wola, in Poland (then part of the Russian Empire). He was the 2nd of 5 boys in a poor Polish family.

Raymund developed a strong religious yearning from an early life. He recounts an early childhood vision of the Virgin Mary. “That night, I asked the Mother of God what was to become of me, a Child of Faith. Then she came to me holding two crowns, one white, the other red. She asked me if I was willing to accept either of these crowns. The white one meant that I should persevere in purity, and the red that I should become a martyr. I said that I would accept them both.” Raymund at age 13 & his older brother entered a Franciscan friary. Three years later he was admitted to the Order of St. Francis where he was given the name “Maximilian.”

Kolbe went to study in Rome. He gained a doctorate in philosophy in 1915. He was ordained a priest in 1918. In 1919, he also gained a doctorate of theology. During his studies, Kolbe suffered his 1st bout of tuberculosis & he became quite ill. Throughout the rest of his life, he experienced poor health, but never complained, and became ever more committed to spreading the faith. After his studies, he returned to the newly independent Poland. From 1919 to 1922, he taught at the Kraków Seminary.

As a priest, Maximilian worked for the conversion of sinners & enemies of the Catholic Church. During his time in Rome, he witnessed angry protests by the Freemasons against the Vatican. As a result, he devoted his life to Mary & decided to create an association – the Militia Immaculata, or Knights of the Immaculate – to multiply the world’s devotion to Mary and, through her, to the Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ. Just 6 men helped lay the foundation for Knights of the Immaculate. By 1919, the association was flourishing in Rome and Krakow & Lwow, Poland. Realizing the pen is mightier than the sword, Fr. Kolbe created a newsletter call Knight of the

Immaculata to spread the word. Despite financial hardship and Fr. Kolbe’s frail health, the Knight grew from its original 5,000 circulation, and established itself as a strong voice for Catholics in Poland. A generous donation allowed Fr. Maximilian to found Niepokalanów (City of the Immaculate) in 1927. The Knight’s circulation rose to 65,000, then quickly doubled and tripled.

In 1930, Kolbe travelled to Japan, where he spent several years serving as a missionary. He founded a monastery on the outskirts of Nagasaki (the monastery survived the atomic blast, shielded by a mountain). However, increasingly ill, he returned to Poland in 1936 to Niepokalanów, where 600 faithful now produced an astounding 700,000 copies per issue of the Knight, a number that eventually would exceed 1 million.

In 1939, the Nazis invaded Poland. Niepokalanów was pillaged. Fr. Kolbe was imprisoned on several occasions, repeatedly abused, and once nearly beaten to death. Miraculously, he & the brothers were freed. They returned to Niepokalanów in 1940 to care for war victims, even German soldiers. Despite the German occupation, Fr. Kolbe produced an issue of the Knight on the feast of the Immaculata in December.

On May 28, 1941, he was imprisoned in Auschwitz and became prisoner number 16670. Undaunted, Fr. Kolbe continued caring for others, offering them his meager food rations, spiritual guidance & finally his life. When 10 prisoners were sentenced to death in retaliation for an escape, a prisoner name Francis Gajowniczek pleaded for mercy. Despite hardly knowing the man, Fr. Kolbe offered to take his place in the starvation bunker. The tireless Christian soldier led his fellow prisoners in prayer & song for 2 weeks. On August 14, 1941, the 47 year old priest’s life of service to God was ended as guards gave him a lethal injection. His body was incinerated the next day on August 15th, the Feast of Mary’s Assumption into heaven. Maximilian was canonized a saint on October 10, 1982 by Pope John Paul II. His feast day is celebrated on August 14th, the date of his death. To learn about him, see p. 6 for 2 different videos to watch. See p. 7 for the list that he is the patron saint of. Continue to pray the novena on pp. 4-5.

Thank you for your generosity with the Mission Appeal last weekend. See p. 9 for the wonderful results!

Greater love has no

man than this, that

a man lay down his life

for his friends.

John 15:13 You may use all or any part, of this prayer format for your family’s novena. Try to be conscious of the

9 days preceding the anniversary of St. Maximilian’s death in Auschwitz on August 14, 1941.

A BEGINNING PRAYER Let us pray: God of power and mercy, you gave Maximilian Kolbe, your martyr, victory over suf-fering and death. Strengthen us as we prepare to celebrate the day of his triumph, and help us to be victorious over the evils of darkness and sin. We ask this through Christ, our Lord, Amen.

A PRAYER FOR THE INTERCESSION OF ST. MAXIMILIAN KOLBE

Merciful God you made St. Maximilian Kolbe one of the foremost Catholic evangelists of the last century. He helped teach us your merciful plan for all, thus moving us to full conversion in faith & hope to perfect obedience and union with the Heart of Jesus and to complete ob-servance of your law of Love. St. Maximilian was made fruitful through carrying the cross of suffering with dignity & hope loving his persecu-tors & giving up his life for a total stranger. Through the intercession of St. Maximilian, grant us our petitions. Give us a like dignity & hope in our sufferings & in our sacrifices. If it will glorify you heal us of all our infirmities, both physical & spiritual. Grant to all who make this no-vena all the graces that St. Maximilian himself desires and asks for. Enable each one of us as well as the whole Church to follow his example of effective Catholic evangelism. Fi-nally, we ask that you grant the ardent desire of St. Maxi-milian, for the return to you of every individual person, family, society, nation & culture of our time and of all time to come. Amen.

Leader: God, come to my assistance. Family: Lord, make haste to help me. Leader: Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. Family: As it was in the beginning, is now and will be forever. God our Father in heaven, receive our humble prayers. God the Son, Redeemer of the world, save us. God the Holy Spirit, fill our hearts with your love. Holy Trinity, one God, grant us your salvation. Holy Mary, Mother of our Savior, intercede for us. St. Maximilian Kolbe, great-hearted lover of God & man, Pray for us. Faithful follower of St. Francis of Assisi, Teach us your total dedication to the Gospel life. Man of living faith, Lead us to believe as you did. Brave Knight of the Immaculata, Help us to be instruments of Mary. Apostle of the Miraculous Medal, Give us confidence in Mary, the Mother of Jesus. Model of religious life, Assist us to be poor, chaste, and obedient. SIGNIFICANCE of BOWING

A bow signifies reverence & honor shown to the names or event being mentioned. We are to do the following: 1) A bow of the head is made when the three Divine Persons (the Trinity) are named together and at the names of Jesus, of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and of the Saint in whose honor Mass is being celebrated. 2) A bow of the body (a profound bow) is made during the Creed with the words “and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.” —General Instruction to the Roman Missal, #275

For the scriptures used at Mass every day & to hear a Reflection, go to: https://www.usccb.org On the very top Menu bar, tab in on “Daily Reading.” Then click on the date of the readings you would like to read. You may also request to have the daily read-ings sent to your email.

CIVIL DISCOURSE “Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God.” These words bring us up short! What could we be doing to grieve the Holy Spirit? Alas, the same things that the Ephesians were doing in the time of Paul, that is, fighting, shout-ing, reviling each other with fury, anger, and malice. Just tune in to talk radio some day or observe some “road rage” on the expressway. If we who are partakers of the Body of Christ can treat one another this way, what does that mean about our belief in Christ’s message of peace and reconciliation? The Eucharist is the sacrament of unity. It is communion with God and with each other. A good first step would be to speak civilly to each other, even in disagreement! Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
