11TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME June 17, 2018

Scripture Insights Today’s Word reminds us that the Lord is at work in the world, in us, and in spreading God’s Kingdom. The prophet Ezekiel addresses the people of Israel encouraging them never to lose hope. As God’s people, they are assured that their fortunes will be reversed. The prophet of-fers a beautiful image: God takes a shoot from a cedar tree and plants it in the ground, where it grows into a majestic tree. In like manner, this loving God, whose power makes mighty trees grow, will restore the people of Israel. “We walk by faith, and not by sight” is a call Paul ad-dresses to his friends in Corinth: Remember that life is a journey to the Lord. No matter what hap-pens Christ journeys with us. Our faith in Christ offers the confidence that we can face every chal-lenge. Consequently, we are called to act in a way that pleases the Lord. The Gospel presents two parables that focus on God’s work within us and in the spread of God’s Kingdom. In the first parable, Jesus compares the growth of God’s Kingdom on earth to God’s creative power work-ing mysteriously in the world of nature. In the second parable, Jesus compares the growth of the Kingdom to a small mustard seed planted in the ground that becomes the largest of plants. All these readings challenge us to remember that the work we do is ultimately not ours, but the Lord’s. God works in mysterious ways within our lives and within the world in the growth of God’s Kingdom. The future that lies ahead is mysteri-ous, but it is rooted in God’s love for his people, beginning with the people of Israel and culminat-ing with Jesus and the growth of the Christian Church. ♦ Reread the first sentence of the Second read-

ing carefully. What do you think Paul means by “We walk by faith and not by sight”?

♦ In your own life where have you seen God’s mysterious power at work lately?

♦ How do the images of God’s working in na-ture help you understand God’s working in our lives?

Our Stewardship for Sunday, June 10, 2018 was $12,716.71 $18,827.00 is NEEDED to balance the budget weekly. Shortfall for June 10, 2018 is $6,110.20. 2nd Collection: Building Fund: $702.81.

Thanks for your generosity.

Prayer for Thought. The Kingdom of Heaven is like a mustard seed that, when it is sown in the ground it is the smallest of all seeds on the earth. But once it is sown, I t springs up and be-comes the largest plants and puts forth

branches that the birds of the sky can dwell in its shade. Grow in Faith; Pray for the Kingdom of God; God gives power and strength to his people.

ATTENTION St. Peter Claver Family: a late-night Facebook post to this account indicated that without raising a significant amount of money, St. Peter Claver School would not open for the coming school year. This simply is not true! While the school is currently facing a deficit, we are working with the parish leadership and the Archdiocese of New Orleans Office of Catholic Schools to address it and plan for the future. If any alumni or business leaders would like to as-sist in this effort, please contact the School Of-fice, (504- 822-8191). For those wanting to con-tribute to balancing the budget for the 2018-2019 school year, we are accepting donations at https://spclaver.eduk12.net. Again, St. Peter Claver Catholic School will open this year as we continue our mission to provide a Catholic Chris-tian education, to form a worshipping community which exemplifies Christian beliefs and values, to affirm our African-American cultural heritage and to instill in all a sense of responsibility so that we may become responsible citizens of the local and global community. Thank you for your prayerful support!

St. Peter Claver Church celebrates our 2018 gradu-ates. Surrounded by family and friends, the graduates of our parish took another important walk on Sunday, May 27th, although this time across a stage. The honorees marched in the opening procession at church during a congratulatory mass acknowledging their academic achievements after a rousing homily from Deacon Lawrence Houston, they received Eu-charist and listened to several selections from the Voices of Peter Claver Choir. The graduates were then honored with the traditional draping ceremony. This year, Fr. Asare invited New Orleans’ first fe-male mayor, LaToya Cantrell, drape each graduate with the customary St Peter Claver kente stole. The kente stole is adapted from a Ghanian print. It repre-sents ancestral heritage and is in St. Peter Claver Church’s colors green and gold. We celebrated 16 High School graduates: Gabriel Evans, Jayla Wil-liams, Divine Woodfin, Jade Peoples, Alex Williams, Devante Phillips, Ashley Peters, Victoria Bachemin, Ire Arnaud Brice Berger, Jalil Dukes, Cameron Lyon, Bailey Lawrence, Keyantae Frazier, Caitlin Toregano, Damon Smith. 12 Degreed Graduates: Kyle Houston, Tayla Bennet, Herbert Spurlock, IV, Jade Peters-Thompson, Alicia Gray, Heaven Kendall Doulgas, March Barnes, Derekc Rovaris, Jr., Nakisha Joiner, Brooke Lawrence and Keenan Holmes.

PROSTATE CANCER AWARENESS

Prostate cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in men and may have no signs or symp-toms in its early stages. Your risk of prostate cancer increases as you age. Black men have a greater risk of prostate cancer than do men of oth-er races. In black men, prostate cancer is also more likely to be aggressive or advanced. Pros-tate cancer that is more advanced may have signs and symptoms such as: Trouble urinating-Decreased force in the stream of urine-Blood in the semen-discomfort in the pelvic area-Bone pain-Erectile dysfunction. Prostate cancer that is detected early-when it’s still confined to the prostate gland-has a better chance of successful treatment. If you have any signs or symptoms that worry you, SEE YOUR HEATHCARE PROVIDER FOR A PROSTATE EXAMINATION. If you need more information about enlarged Prostate Disease or Prostate Cancer call or visit the Health & Wellness Ministry located in the Misaada Center.

BIBLE STUDY.. Let it Grow! There is a Chi-nese proverb that says, “All the flowers of tomor-row are in the seeds of today.” Thomas Kempis may have had this thought in mind in his celebrat-ed work, The Imitation of Christ, when he wrote: “Learn to despise outward things and to give your-self to inward things, and you shall see the king-dom of God rise within you. In other words, the seeds of the Kingdom of God are already placed within us. Amen.
