FROM THE PASTOR
Praised be Jesus Christ!
I sincerely hope you had a wonderful and restful holiday. I was able to spend Christmas day with my family, all the while being so pleased by my “parish family” and all of the preparations and assistance that accompanied our Christmas Masses in St. Peter’s Parish.
Our churches look beautiful, thanks to all those who assisted in their decoration.
Our servers, readers, greeters, and sacristans were so diligent in making the liturgies run smoothly. (Special thanks also to those who do the scheduling for these Masses—not an easy task!)
Our choirs and musicians sounded excellent and well-rehearsed.
I also want to thank all other parish volunteers who helped in numerous other ways.
And finally, my special thanks to our parish staff who always put in so much hard work, but are especially patient and helpful to me around these busy holidays!
May all of our work and efforts redound to the praise and glory of the Infant Christ, our Savior!
If you are at St. Dominic during the next few weeks, I would highly encourage you to take a closer look at our Nativity scene under the altar.
In recent years, through normal wear and tear, the statues had become faded, chipped, and in some cases actually broken—and it was obvious after last Christmas that something needed to be done.
One of our parishioners, Laurie DeMay, approached us last year and said that a good family friend of hers in Pennsylvania does this kind of restoration work as a hobby, and would be willing to donate her services in attempt to bring our Nativity set back to life again.
I decided to take her up on the offer, and so for most of the last year, our statues were being slowly restored and repainted.
To be honest, I didn’t give it much thought throughout the course of the year. After all, it’s hard to think about Christmas during the heat of summer.
But as Christmas approached, and I heard that the work was now complete, I arranged to go pick them up in Pennsylvania the week before Christmas.
When we opened the boxes and took a look at the statues for the first time, I was literally stunned by the transformation. The restored statues look absolutely beautiful!
I honestly never imagined that they would look so professionally done and artistically treated. What was perhaps even more surprising were all of the little creative details that she added to the set—such as jewels and gems on the kings and camel, rope and straw for the donkey and shepherd, cloth and metallic trimming on clothes, and many other small details.
Again, I invite you to study the set yourself and allow the scene to inspire your devotion and love for the Holy Family.
In this regard, can I ask a favor?
If you attend Mass at St. Dominic and appreciate the immense amount of work that was done for free on our historic Nativity set (by a non-parishioner, nonetheless!) please consider joining me in sending a thank you card and/or other form of appreciation to:
Carolyn Ghignone c/o Laurie DeMay
6 West High Street Shortsville, NY 14548
A final word of thanks to all those who sent me cards and gifts throughout the Christmas season. They all mean so much to me and the cards currently decorate the large bulletin board in my rectory kitchen.
In the hearts of Jesus and Mary,
Father Peter Van Lieshout
