Finally, he pointed out that you need to specify a timeframe. These five keys have initial letters that spell SMART. For example, have you ever wanted to read the New Testament? Make a specific schedule; pick a manageable number of pages to read per day; do it because you want to do it, not because you have to do it; and pick the number of days or weeks you plan to devote to this discipline. The thing I most liked about Herrera’s article are two comments he made about human behavior. First, he noted that many people suffer from too much positive thinking. ( e.g. I will read the Bible cover-to-cover four times this year!) It sounds laudable, but for most people it is simply unrealis- tic. We are basically setting ourselves up for failure. Mr. Herrera’s observation reminds me of something the Psalmist wrote about having reasonable expectations: “I do not occupy myself with great matters, or with things that are too hard for me.(Psalm 131:2, found in The Book of Common Prayer, p. 785) Hey, maybe we should re- solve to read the Psalms this year! The author’s second observation is related, and even more unfortunate. I, myself, have wit- nessed this over and over in my years as a pastor. Many people suffer from a lack of self- forgiveness. When we slip up or fall short, we are tempted to put ourselves down and decide we are just not good enough to keep striving toward our goal. We are tempted to think that we simply cannot live up to the expectations we set or that others have. The easy, obvious (and unhelpful) answer to this dilemma is to quit. I hope you enjoy setting some goals for yourself (literally—for yourself). Perhaps you can make them specific, measurable, and achievable within a reasonable timeframe. Yet, what I really hope for you in 2018 is that you will practice forgiving yourself in the same way God forgives—with enough grace and mercy to inspire getting back up and trying again! Blessings and Peace,

Dear People of St. Peter’s,

Merry Christmas! We are about half way through the 12-day season celebrating the miracle of

how “the Word became flesh and lived among us.” This is about the time when many people

begin thinking of how they want to live in the year to come. ‘Tis the season of formulating New

Year’s resolutions!

I am not qualified to offer advice about making (or keeping) New Year’s resolutions. My resolve

vacillates as much as anyone else’s. In January I am frustrated at the lack of available parking at

the gym. By February I feel smug when I find an array of empty spaces in the gym parking lot. By

March the clerk at the front desk greets me with a smile that says, “I don’t believe I know you,” as

she greets other clients by name as they enter alongside me.

I read a helpful article the other day (December 18th) in the New York Times about New Year’s

resolutions. Tim Herrera suggested picking specific goals that are measurable and achievable.

He emphasized making your goals relevant for you (in other words—resolve to do things you

want to do, not merely what that ‘little voice’ tells you that you should do.) Finally, he pointed out

that you need to specify a timeframe. These five keys have initial letters that spell SMART.

For example, have you ever wanted to read the New Testament? Make a specific schedule; pick

a manageable number of pages to read per day; do it because you want to do it, not because

you have to do it; and pick the number of days or weeks you plan to devote to this discipline.

The thing I most liked about Herrera’s article are two comments he made about human behavior.

First, he noted that many people suffer from too much positive thinking. (e.g. I will read the Bible

cover-to-cover four times this year!) It sounds laudable, but for most people it is simply unrealis-

tic. We are basically setting ourselves up for failure.

Mr. Herrera’s observation reminds me of something the Psalmist wrote about having reasonable

expectations: “I do not occupy myself with great matters, or with things that are too hard for

me.” (Psalm 131:2, found in The Book of Common Prayer, p. 785) Hey, maybe we should re-

solve to read the Psalms this year!

The author’s second observation is related, and even more unfortunate. I, myself, have wit-

nessed this over and over in my years as a pastor. Many people suffer from a lack of self-

forgiveness. When we slip up or fall short, we are tempted to put ourselves down and decide we

are just not good enough to keep striving toward our goal. We are tempted to think that we simply

cannot live up to the expectations we set or that others have. The easy, obvious (and unhelpful)

answer to this dilemma is to quit.

I hope you enjoy setting some goals for yourself (literally—for yourself). Perhaps you can make

them specific, measurable, and achievable within a reasonable timeframe. Yet, what I really hope

for you in 2018 is that you will practice forgiving yourself in the same way God forgives—with

enough grace and mercy to inspire getting back up and trying again!

Blessings and Peace,

NEW FACES AT ST. PETER’S

Carol Bowers 210 Cherub Ct.

Greenville, SC 29615 864-320-3191

[email protected]

Carol, who was born and raised in Pittsburg, moved to Greenville in 1978. She was raised a Catholic, but was looking for a new church home. She found St. Peter’s and loved the traditional service. Friends belong here! She and her daughter, Jeanne Carter, attended the introductory class together. Carol has four daughters and seven grandchildren. Five of the grandchildren live in Greenville. In her spare time Carol exercises, goes to movies, plays with her cat and spends a lot of time with family. Please welcome this lovely lady to our St. Peter’s family. She usually attends the 10:30 service.

Jeanne Carter 502 Silver Ridge Dr.

Greer, SC 29651 864-230-3134

[email protected]

Jeanne moved to Greenville in 1978 when she was in high school. She found St. Peter’s with her mother, Carol Bow-ers. She really loves the people and says that she has never attended such a friendly church. Jeanne is planning to join the choir. Jeanne has worked at Astellas in pharmaceutical sales for twenty years. She has two children, Emily who is twenty-two and Ben who is twenty. Ben goes to Clemson University. Her new family member is a puppy that is nine months old. This ball of energy is part shepherd and part collie. She is now working with him in agility training. Because of his excess energy, he led her to the training of a “Canine Good Citizen”. When he passes the test, they can visit the elderly, nursing homes, etc. Please welcome this outgoing new member to our church. She usually attends the 10:30 service.

Advent Wreath Making

Feast of St. Nicholas At the Feast of St. Nicholas families learned about gener-ous St. Nicholas of Myra. Melinda Long read Peef: A Christmas Bear and the chil-dren had a visit from jolly ole St. Nicholas himself! Families brought canned goods

and gently used toys as an of-

fering. The toys were given to

Shepherds Gate and the food

went to United Ministries.

Annual Chili Cook-Off

Congratulations and thank you to all who fed us a great

chili lunch on Dec. 3rd. The Overall Chili Champion

award goes to Debbie Cannada for the second year in a

row and the Hottest Chili award goes to Chris Dewey!

St. Peter’s Giving Tree

St Peter’s giving tree overflowed with gifts for families that were delivered on December 24th. There are 12 little boys, 2 little girls, their parents and an elderly lady who had a very merry Christmas.

Thank you for sharing the love and joy of Christmas

with these families!

Christmas Pageant

Children and Family Corner

We had a very blessed December. On December 3rd

we had

many families join us to make Advent wreaths for their home

devotional time. What a joy it was to see families working

together to create such beautiful wreaths! I hope the wreaths

provided a means for your family to enjoy some devotional

time amid the holiday craziness. On December 10th we gath-

ered together for the St. Nicholas service. Father Furman

lead us in a worship service. Upon leaving the sanctuary the

children discovered a special treat. We headed down to

Stockstill Hall for more fun where we found hot chocolate and

cookies waiting for us and had a chance to make their own

St. Nicholas to take home. After a lovely story time, St. Nich-

olas arrived to greet the children. On December 24th we had

a birthday party for Jesus and our children performed the an-

nual Christmas Pageant for our family Christmas Eve service.

I would like to thank all of the people who worked to create

wonderful memories for the families of St. Peter’s! Thank you

also to the families for making Jesus a priority during this holi-

day season!
