SEPTEMBER: MONTH OF OUR LADY OF SORROWS
On September 15, the Church observed a memorial honoring Mary as Our Lady of Sorrows.
“And a sword will pierce your own soul, too,” Simeon told Mary when she presented the child Jesus in the Temple forty days after his birth
(Luke 2:35). That prophecy was fulfilled when Mary stood at the foot of her son’s Cross, sharing his bitter suffering. During this
month of September, we honor Mary under the title of Our Lady of Sorrows. This month, let us bring to Mary all our sorrows, knowing
that she understands what it is to suffer.

Praised be Jesus Christ!
In the Church’s liturgical calendar, the end of September and early October contain two important feast days commemorating angels: September 29 – the feast of day of the Holy Archangels (Michael, Raphael, and Gabriel); and October 2 – the feast day of the Holy Guardian Angels.
With these two feasts just around the corner, here are some interesting facts/common misconceptions about our Catholic belief in angels and their role in our devotional life:
1. First of all, angels exist! The Holy Scriptures are literally full, from cover to cover, of accounts of angelic assistance and visitations. This is not some sort of clever literary device. Rather, as the Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches: “The existence of the spiritual, non-corporeal beings that Sacred Scripture usually calls ‘angels’ is a truth of faith. The w itness of Scripture is as clear as the unanimity of Tradition” (CCC #328)
2. Human beings do not become angels when we die. Angels are pure spirits. They do not, and never will have, bodies. Human beings, on the other hand, are essentially a composite of body and soul. For a time after death, our souls are separate from our bodies. But remember, we await the resurrection of the body at the end of time.
3. Traditionally there are understood to be nine choirs (or general groupings) of angels, according to their function. These choirs are as follows, from highest to lowest: Seraphim, Cherubim, Thrones, Dominations, Virtues, Powers, Principalities, Archangels, and Angels. The higher choirs are more directly associated as being attendants at the throne of God, while the lower choirs are by function increasingly more associated with guidance and assistance in human affairs.
4. Despite some perhaps unfortunate tendencies in Renaissance art which depict angels almost as “chubby babies with wings,” angels are in fact incredibly powerful creatures of God. They are vastly superior to us in knowledge and influence. We get a glimpse at the power of the angels when we consider that angelic appearances in Scripture and Tradition are almost always associated with an immediate reaction of great fear on the part of the human beings who witness them.
5. All the angels were immediately put to the test after their creation. Those angels who sinned and chose against God were then punished by banishment to hell, and are now what we know variously named as fallen angels, demons, or devils. The structure of the angelic will is such that they will never repent of the choice that they made. So the fallen angels now work continuously to tempt us into sin and disobedience to God.
6. Each of us has an angel guardian assigned to us by God to assist us in our walk with the Lord and to guide us toward salvation. We can call upon the assistance of our guardian angel in various needs, especially during times of temptation. We can also ask them for their prayers and develop a friendship with them through prayer.
One of my favorite prayers in our Catholic devotional tradition is the very powerful St. Michael the Archangel prayer. It is a great one to memorize and pray daily, and especially as part of our thanksgiving after Mass:
St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the
Devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world
seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.
