Dear Parishioners, In the first reading from next week’s feast of Pentecost, we will hear how the apostles were given the power to speak different languages, just as Jesus said they would in his last talk to them before he ascended into Heaven which we celebrate today. But the “new languages” which Jesus mentioned did not only mean the languages of different countries. When He lived with us, Jesus preached a new language of love, a language unheard of by His listeners. “Offer no resistance to one who is evil….Pray for those who persecute you.” His

crucifixion was also a new language, a non-verbal language which spoke volumes of how far He was willing to go to bring us back to God. One of the best ways to learn a new language is to live in the country where that particular language is spoken. Many of our non-Hispanic Joliet diocesan priests who speak fluent Spanish lived in Mexico for some time in order to be totally immersed in the Spanish language. The Son of God came from Heaven to live with us to totally immerse Himself in our lives, learning to speak our human language. Even though He has returned to heaven, He remains with us in our hearts and minds to help us be totally immersed in His language of love as we continue our journey to a joyful life in our future home with Him. In the Word,

The Gospel mentions the Ascension, with Jesus taken up to heaven and seated at the right hand of God. The focus of the passage is on Jesus’ commissioning His disciples, along with instructions concerning their mission. They are to proclaim the Gospel to every creature, leaving the choice up to them as to whether they believe and are baptized or not. Signs will accompany those who believe; heal the sick, drive out demons, speak new languages and encounter deadly things that will not harm

them. With Jesus enthroned in heaven, they went forth and the Lord was with them, confirming their word through signs. Such is still the mission of every disciple, always assured that Jesus is with us in all our witnessing.

To ascend means to rise above--as Jesus ascended to the Father while the

apostles looked up, frozen in time. They had been given their mission--to teach the gospel to all nations and to bring all people to the knowledge of God. This mission continues today and is the mission for all of us who believe. The question in our minds may be the same as it was for the apostles on that first Ascension Day. How do we spread the gospel? The call to evangelize is not as difficult as we may think. To evangelize means to show the Love of the Father to the world. The act may be as simple as holding the hand of someone in pain or to share their joy. It can also be traveling to a foreign place on a mission trip. Primarily, it is being open to the presence of God in our lives and to see His presence in others, guiding them to a relationship with their Creator. This can be accomplished by respecting the dignity of all creation and responding to the needs of friends and strangers alike. Random acts of kindness are spontaneous moments of doing the unexpected in order to lift the spirits of another. These actions may have a profound effect on the life of the recipient and may cause them to do likewise for others. When we reach out in simple ways, we spread the good news in power and assist in showing God’s grace. In doing so, we too rise with Christ to bring his peace and draw others to rise with us.

WORLD MEETING OF FAMILIES IN PHILADELPHIA IN 2015 September 22-27, 2015 (worldmeeting2015.org)

Light in a dark world. Pope Francis observed that the Church is popular with the world when Catholics work for social justice. But, the Pope continued, with respect to “the cultural crisis” facing the family, “we find it difficult to make people see that when we raise other questions less palatable to public opinion, we are doing so out of fidelity to precisely the same convictions about human dignity and the common good.” Subjects such as pornography, contraception, and so-called same-sex marriage are topics where Catholic teaching tends to be at odds with current worldly opinion. All Church teaching about marriage, the family, and sexuality flows from Jesus.

Catholic moral theology builds upon basic Christian convictions about God’s creation and covenant, humanity’s fall, and Christ’s incarnation, life, crucifixion, and resurrection. These teachings involve costs and suffering for all who would be Jesus’ disciples, but they also open up new opportunities for beauty and human flourishing. Every time the Church says “no” to something which secular society accepts, it is for the sake of enabling a deeper “yes” to God and his plan for our lives. (Christopher C. Roberts)

WORLD MEETING PRAYER God and Father of us all, in Jesus, your Son and our Savior, you have made us your sons and daughters in the family of the Church.

May your grace and love help our families in every part of the world be united to one another in fidelity to the Gospel. May the example of the Holy Family, with the aid of your Holy Spirit, guide all families, especially those most troubled,

to be homes of communion and prayer and to always seek your truth and life your love. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
