Dear Parishioners, One of the most learned saints in Christianity is St. Augustine. There’s a story about him taking a walk along a beach while thinking about the Holy Trinity. During his walk, he saw a boy trying to use a spoon to remove all the waters of the ocean into a little hole. When Augustine told him how impossible his plan was, the boy replied by telling him that the mystery of the Holy Trinity was also not something that could be comprehended by the human mind.

Though this story is probably a legend, it is an example of faith versus reason; that we are not asked to understand the Holy Trinity, which is impossible to do, we are only asked to believe. While God knows our limitations, He also knows what we are able to do, to love and serve Him. Admittedly, it is not always easy or convenient to fully give of ourselves to God and others made in His image and likeness, but let’s never forget that we have Jesus’ promise of His faithful help because we will always have His faithful presence with us. In the Word,

Just as we see signs alerting us of future roadway construction, the following is my alert to you about construction and renovation at St. Philip’s this summer. Beginning the week of June 15, the worship space will be closed to do much needed cleaning and painting of the walls and ceiling. During that time, we will celebrate Sunday masses in the gym and weekday masses in Room 1. Funerals will take place in other churches in the area. The work should be completed by the beginning of July. Another construction project that will take place this summer is new doors at the main entrance and the second floor to provide greater security for children in our school and Religious Education Program. We hope to have these new doors in place by the beginning of the school year. Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding as these projects occur.

Registration forms were sent home with the oldest/only child in Grades K-7 from each family on April 15 and 18. Registration forms are also available on-line at st-phil.org, in the literature rack in the church narthex, and in the RE Office. Completed forms may be e-mailed to [email protected], faxed to 630-543-4672, put in the collection plate (in an enveloped marked RE Office), or mailed to 1233 W. Holtz Avenue in Addison. Families with outstanding tuition balances from this year are asked to complete the payment process before registering for the 2015/2016 year.

Vatican City, 20 May 2015 (VIS): The education of children as the natural vocation of the family was the theme of Pope Francis' catechesis during this Wednesday's general audience in St. Peter's Square.

The Holy Father, first citing the words of St. Paul to the Colossians: “Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord. Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged,” emphasized the duty of parents to accompany their children step by step, without demanding the impossible, so as not to overwhelm them. He then went on to speak of the difficulties faced by mothers and fathers who often only have the

opportunity to see their children in the evening when they return home tired after work—“those who are lucky enough to have work,” he added—and also referred to the even more critical situation faced by separated parents, inviting them to ensure that the conflicts between the couple do not have an impact on the children.

Francis also mentioned that the family has been accused of other things, including authoritarianism, favoritism, conformism, and emotional repression that generates conflicts. “In fact, a fracture has opened up between family and society, undermining mutual trust, and in this way, the alliance between family and society in the education of children has entered into a crisis.”

“There are many symptoms,” he continued. “For example, in schools this has affected relationships between parents and teachers. … On the other hand, there has been a proliferation of so-called 'experts' who occupy the role of parents even in the most intimate aspects of education...and parents are expected only to listen, to learn and to adapt. Deprived of their role, they often become excessively apprehensive and possessive with regard to their children, to the point of never correcting them. They tend to increasingly entrust them to 'experts' even in relation to the most delicate and personal aspects of their life, placing themselves in the corner. In this way, parents run the risk of excluding themselves from the life of their children.”

“How have we arrived at this point? Without doubt in the past parents, or rather, certain educational models, had certain limits. But it is also true that there are mistakes that only parents are authorized to make, as they are able to compensate for them in a way that is impossible for any other person. On the other hand, as we well know, life now spares us little time for speaking, reflection and exchange. Many parents are 'kidnapped' by their work and other worries, and they find themselves paralyzed by the fear of making mistakes. The problem, however, is not only about talking...let us ask ourselves instead: do we seek to understand 'where' our children truly are on their path? Where is their soul? … And above all, do we want to know?”

Francis underlined that the Christian communities are called upon to offer support to the educational mission of the family. “At the base of everything there is love, that which God gives to us, that is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Even in the best of families, there is much to be endured, and it takes a lot of patience. Jesus Himself experienced education in the family.”

“Even in this case, the grace of Christ's love fulfills what is inscribed in human nature. How many excellent examples we have of Christian parents full of human wisdom! They show that good family education is the backbone of humanism. Its spread through society is the resource that allows us to compensate for the shortcomings, the wounds, the lack of paternity and maternity that affect the least fortunate children, and works true miracles.”

“I hope that the Lord may give Christian families the faith, freedom and courage necessary for their missions. If family education rediscovers the pride of its central role, many things will change for the better, for uncertain parents and disappointed children. It is time for fathers and mothers to return from their exile, and to fully resume their role as educators,” concluded Francis.

“In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” Christians who use this phrase repeatedly could easily lose sight of the powerful mystery it expresses. Today, Trinity Sunday, the Scriptures call for reflection on this central belief of Christianity: the Trinity. One of the greatest gifts of the Christian faith is the dogma of the triune God: God is three (tri) in one (une). Christians name God as a Trinity of Father, Son, and Spirit but only in light of Jesus Christ does such language and insight

fully emerge. Source: 2015 Sourcebook, LTP

Throughout history many have tried to explain the nature of our triune God.

This mystery of our faith will not be completely understood until the time it is revealed to us by God himself. How God can be Father, Son, and Spirit at the same time is well beyond human explanation. One way to think about it is that most of us fill many different roles in life. For example, I am a father—but also a son, and an uncle. These are my roles in the lives of my family, but it doesn’t explain how the Holy Trinity of God can be all three to all people everywhere. I am only a father to my children, only a son to my parents, and only an uncle to my nieces and nephews. To everyone else, I am merely myself—no more, no less. God is the creator, redeemer, and sanctifier to all he has made—to everyone, everywhere.

The mystery is how God remains the same—His relationship with us never changes, no matter who we are or in what time in history we live. He is faithful and true. Perhaps in an attempt to imitate Christ, St. Paul strove to be all things to all people in

the time he lived. If we are ourselves and live in the presence and love of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit and allow their will to be ours, then we will help to bring the Kingdom of God to our world.

“Pope Francis has captivated the world with his humility, warmth, and compassion for each person. Vivid accounts of his tenderness for the ‘least of these’—the elderly, the imprisoned, those with disfiguring disabilities, the unborn, and many more—seize our attention. Why? At the heart of each of these interactions is a truth which resonates

in our hearts, revealing to us something essential to understanding ourselves and our purpose. We are loved.”

It is not always easy to be family. Good parents, the old saying goes, give their children roots and wings, a sense of security and freedom to live their lives. But achieving such a balance is often accomplished only after years of working at it. Sometimes children feel smothered by their parents, that they are trying to control their lives; at other times, children feel neglected, that they are not important, even not loved. The readings today remind us that God wishes us to know that we can find our roots in the divine love of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and that we can also find our freedom there. Paul's words to the Romans pick up first on the purpose of the gift of the Spirit that we celebrated last Sunday. The Spirit has been given us to lead us more deeply into the mystery of God, into the love of God, so that we recognize that we are God's beloved children. This same message is found in Moses' words to the people as they are about to enter into the Promised Land. Has anyone ever had a God like our God? Moses marvels. Has any God ever shown a people how dear they are by such signs and wonders as our God has shown us? Moses is moving them to know who they are as God's beloved family and to "fix in your heart, that the LORD is God . . . and that there is no other" (Deuteronomy 4:39). But we are not to stay all curled up in the divine embrace. We have been sent forth to proclaim to others this good news, to "go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations" (Matthew 28:19). We do this when we allow the Spirit to lead us, to guide us in witnessing to God who is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
