25th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Dear friends,
First, let me thank all of you who have responded in heartfelt generosity to what is truly Christ’s call to service in His Church and in
the world. May God bless all of you, servants of the Lord, in all of your ministries. Listen to His voice as He continues to call us
deeper into His own Ministry.
For the Year of Mercy, Pope Francis has decreed some major changes in the way in which the Church judges petitions for a Decree of
Nullity. These changes are intended to both simplify and expedite the process. Although the changes will not take effect until
December, this is a good time to begin thinking about making petition, if it will bring you closer to Christ and his Church.
If you are in a second marriage outside of the Church or are considering remarriage after a civil divorce, please come and visit with me.
You may make an appointment at any time by calling the office: (713) 473-9484. My extension is 301. Now is the time.
Fr. Joe
Queridos amigos,
301. Ahora es el tiempo.
Padre Joe

First Reading Wis 2:12, 17-20 The wicked say: Let us beset the just one, because he is obnoxious to us; he sets himself against our doings, reproaches us for
transgressions of the law and charges us with violations of our training. Let us see whether his words be true; let us find out what
will happen to him. For if the just one be the son of God, God will defend him and deliver him from the hand of his foes. With
revilement and torture let us put the just one to the test that we may have proof of his gentleness and try his patience. Let us
condemn him to a shameful death; for according to his own words, God will take care of him.
Responsorial Psalm Ps 54 R. The Lord upholds my life.
Second Reading Jas 3:16—4:3
Beloved: Where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every foul practice. But the wisdom from above is first
of all pure, then peaceable, gentle, compliant, full of mercy and good fruits, without inconstancy or insincerity. And the fruit of
righteousness is sown in peace for those who cultivate peace. Where do the wars and where do the conflicts among you come
from? Is it not from your passions that make war within your members? You covet but do not possess. You kill and envy but you
cannot obtain; you fight and wage war. You do not possess because you do not ask. You ask but do not receive, because you ask
wrongly, to spend it on your passions.
Gospel Mk 9:30-37
Jesus and his disciples left from there and began a journey through Galilee, but he did not wish anyone to know about it. He was
teaching his disciples and telling them, “The Son of Man is to be handed over to men and they will kill him, and three days after
his death the Son of Man will rise.” But they did not understand the saying, and they were afraid to question him. They came to
Capernaum and, once inside the house, he began to ask them, “What were you arguing about on the way?” But they remained
silent. They had been discussing among themselves on the way who was the greatest. Then he sat down, called the Twelve, and
said to them, “If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all.” Taking a child, he placed it in the
their midst, and putting his arms around it, he said to them, “Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me;
and whoever receives me, receives not me but the One who sent me.”
Llegaron a Cafarnaúm, y

AGING MINISTRY INTEREST
Attention Seniors- Your wisdom, experience, and help is
needed !!! — You may have heard that there is an Aging
Ministry being formed at St Pius V. One of the first steps is to
find out who is interested in participating in fun programs,
including regular social events. Additionally, we would like to
reach out to our seniors who may wish to be socially connected
with the parish, and may be home-bound, living in nursing
homes or assisted living facilities, or need transportation.
If you wish to be a part of this ministry, whether attending
events or helping with planning and having fun social events,
please let the parish know. You can call the parish office and
leave your name, phone number, and email address (if you have
email). You can also fill out a form (gold colored located in the
back of the church). Please fill it out and place it in the
collection basket, or whatever is easiest for you, such as
personally drop it off or mail it to the church office.
Someone will be contacting you with further information.
Thanks,z

The Mass will be followed by dinner at the Cathedral Centre at 7:30 p.m. This year’s dinner speaker will be Gov. Greg Abbott, the 48th governor of Texas. Dinner seating is limited. En Español, la próxima fin de semana.
To respond to any of these parish needs with the gift of your God-given time and talents, you are
invited to go to the Parish Website (http://www.stpiusvchurch.com) and click on the links for
SPVolunteers or Ministry. You can also call the Parish Office (713-473-9484) or fill out the form
on the other side and drop it into the collection basket.
Ushers
We seriously need men and women who will commit to Liturgical Ministry as ushers and
greeters. Although we have volunteers who regularly help with the collection, we need
committed Ministers at every Mass. We need two teams of six for every Sunday Mass who will
serve every other week. This means we need 84 men and women committed to this Ministry.
Seven men attended the two meetings last week for those who are committed to this Ministry.
Obviously, we are far short of Ministers. For those of you who are already at Mass and not
committed to another Liturgical Ministry, this is a beautiful and wonderful way to participate in
the Liturgy, a word which means "the work of the people". Please go to the parish website and
fill out the brief form. Please indicate in the "Comments" section which Mass you usually
attend. You can also call the parish office to sign up for this Ministry (713-473-9484).
Spring Festival Committee
The success of our Spring Festival requires careful planning and the support of the whole parish.
Please consider helping with both the planning and the execution. Next week, there will be an
announcement about the first meeting of the Festival Committee. Please plan on attending to
find out how you can help.
Builders, Craftsmen, and Handymen
We have a number of parish projects which we can only accomplish with the help of skilled
volunteers. Please go to the form on parish website and indicate your skills in the "Comments"
section. You can also call the parish office to offer your skills (713-473-9484). Or show up for
the parish workday on Saturday, September 26th, and we'll put you to work.
Money Counters
Our teams of money counters fulfill a vital role in the operations of the parish. Money counters
work in teams of 3 or 4 and usually serve once every 3 or 4 weeks. Teams meet on Sunday
mornings and afternoons and on Monday mornings and usually complete their work in a couple
of hours. There are teams whose working language is either English or Spanish, so all can serve.
for English, please call Alice Layton (Parish Business Administrator) at 713-473-9484 Ext. 302
to become part of this Ministry of Service. For Spanish, please call Fr. Joe at 713-473-9484 Ext.301.
Coordinators for Weddings, Quinceaneras, and Funerals Coordinators help families with the planning of these important Liturgies and provide direction on the
day. They also assist the priest or deacon during the Liturgy. Coordinators serve as there is need, but
normally no more than once or twice a month. You will be provided with training and planning
materials, as well as the opportunity to work alongside an experienced Coordinator.
Parish Office We need volunteers (18 and older) to help with the Parish Office, as receptionists in the evening or on
weekends, for data entry and filing, to help with publishing the bulletin and maintaining the parish
website. Most of these volunteer positions require a commitment of 2-3 hours according to a regular
schedule during the day or evenings.
Social Ministry There are so many pressing needs among our neighbors in the community. We need Ministers who can
work to address these needs. Please consider working the Office of Social Ministry greeting those who
come for help, answering the phone, or providing referrals. You might wish to work in the Pantry,
sorting and distributing food to the hungry, or on Special Projects. Training is provided and the
Ministry is bilingual.
Choirs and Cantors Do you have a love of music? Share that love and your talents given by God with the community

particularly like to form a guitar ensemble to play at the Spanish Masses and dedicated choirs for
Funerals and Baptisms.
