THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO DONATED TO JOSEPH’S COAT. The School, PSR Students and their families donated several car loads of coats, clothing, and personal items to the Joseph’s Coat Organization.

JOSEPH’S COAT…THANKS ST. PIUS X: Thank you so much to all the generous people of St Pius X. Your donations of household goods, clothing, shoes, boots and coats have made a huge difference in the lives of those that we serve at Joseph’s Coat. To see the joy on their faces at receiving a warm blanket or a kid’s coat is the reason we serve and why you give. Please bring any additional items to 240 Outerbelt Street, after January 2, 2018, when we reopen.

Please bring items to the back of the building, dock door #6 on Tuesday, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and Wednesday/Saturday, 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. At the request of many parishioners, we are hoping to find a permanent location for a Joseph’s Coat Donation Box. May you enjoy a fruitful and blessed 2018!

MOUNT CARMEL AND ST. PIUS X PARTNERING IN A TRANSITION OF

CARE CONGREGATIONAL PROGRAM:Many of you know that discharge from the hospital can be a stressful and overwhelming time.

St. Pius has partnered with Mount Carmel Church Partnerships, with a new health and wellness program called Transition of Care. This free and voluntary program was created to help smooth the transition from Mount Carmel East Hospital to home.

Kate Whitman, a Registered Nurse assigned to our parish and Manager of Church Partnerships, will call you within 72 hours of discharge from Mount Carmel East and again 30 days later. She will help connect you with available resources and assist you in navigating this transitional time.

Here is how the program is activated. When you are admitted to Mount Carmel East Hospital (for a short or longer-term stay) – tell the Registration Department staff person that you are from St. Pius. Once you identify St. Pius as your congregation – you have activated the program. If you forget to identify St. Pius as your congregation upon admission to Mount Carmel East Hospital, call 614-546-4634 to request enrollment.

If you are a licensed Registered Nurse and interested in this volunteer role to serve fellow parishioners of St. Pius, call Leah Kelly at 614-866-2859 for additional information or 614-546-4634 for training information.

WE ARE CONTINUING TO SAY THE ROSARY every Sunday after the 10:15 a.m. Mass. We encourage you to plan to stay at least one Sunday a month to pray for the special needs of your family. We also invite each of our ministries to choose one Sunday a year to pray for the needs of your ministry. Contact Denise Colucci to reserve a Sunday. You only need to show up.

A CATHOLIC FAMILY FRATERNAL SERVICE ORGANIZATION

JANUARY 2018 Dear Fellow Parishioner, In an age when the number of abortions approaches (and, in some areas exceeds) the number of live births in this country, we Catholics have an obligation to declare our belief in the Sanctity of life. Starting next Sunday and each Sunday during January, we Members St. Pius X Parish Community, will have the opportunity to express our opposition to the crime of abortion in a very positive manner. Within our parish boundaries, there are many economically disadvantaged women who have opted for life by bringing their children to full term, rather than aborting. The need for assistance for these people is great. We are asking the Members of the Parish to bring to weekend Mass during January any serviceable used or new infants clothing as well as any infants furniture for which you no longer have need. Father Hohman Council of the Knights of Columbus, in cooperation with the J.O.I.N at the Diocesan Center, will see that the items are distributed to those in greatest need. Also Consider donating baby Diapers. January has become the traditional month we set aside to celebrate the Sanctity of life in

all its stages-especially the unborn. Please be as generous as possible. Thank you for your support.

ROMANS 12:13 NEW PARISHIONER WELCOMING MINISTRYDo you love St. Pius X parish? Are you excited and proud to tell people that you are a Catholic Christian? After reflecting further, can you honestly say that your parish has helped you on your faith journey, resulting in a closer relationship with God? Would you be willing to share this enthusiasm for your faith with new members of St. Pius X parish? There is a simple and effective way to do this: by joining our Romans 12:13 New Parishioner Welcoming Ministry! Briefly, here is how our Romans 12:13 ministry works:

• Volunteers are split into two large teams which host “New Parishioner Brunches” in the school cafeteria after the 10:15 a.m. Mass (from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.) four times per year (February, May, August, November).

• In the 3 months leading up to each brunch, volunteers reach out to newly registered parishioners (families) over the phone – you greet them, explain our ministry, tell them about St. Pius X and invite them to the brunch,

• Volunteers prepare or purchase food and bring to the brunch, warmly greet the new parishioners (especially the ones you may have contacted previously) and sit with them during the program (led by the ministry leaders). Bring your smile and don’t allow any new parishioners to sit by themselves! Be a bit willing to get out of your comfort zone.

In short, we want our new parishioners to feel welcomed – like they belong to a family. There is no sales pitch – we are just sharing a meal together! This ministry is appropriate for adult men and women of the parish, and their families. Please prayerfully consider joining our ministry team. If you would like more information, or to join our team, please contact Michael Berger ([email protected], 740-919-4169) or John Zacovic ([email protected], 614-322-9473). For existing members, and new members alike, we will be having a short organizational meeting on Sunday morning, January 14th, 2018, in the school cafeteria.

WWP OPENING YOUR HEART CONNECT COFFEE TALK: Your Heart —You are Captivating: In this world of noise and busyness, it is hard for us to find the time to give ourselves a little attention. But it’s important that we do. Please join us for a taste of Walking with Purpose and discussion to remind us of how precious we are to God and that His love is unconditional. He is captivated by each one of us – not because of what we do or what

others think of us but simply because we are His precious daughters. No experience necessary, just come as you are, bring a friend or two or more for some coffee and a chance to see what Walking with Purpose is all about! Wednesday January 3, 2018, 7:00 p.m. in the Cafeteria “Above all, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.” (Proverbs 4:23). Walking with Purpose is a women’s Catholic Bible study held on Wednesday evenings in the cafeteria and Monday mornings in the Bride’s Room. The program aims to bring women to a closer relationship with Christ. Personal study and small group discussions at WWP each week link our everyday challenges with the solutions given to us through the teachings of Christ and the Catholic Church. For more information, contact Cyndi Williams at [email protected] or 614-860-9587.

SAINT OF THE DAY FOR JANUARY 1

Mary, Mother of GodThe Story of Mary, Mother of GodMary’s divine motherhood broadens the Christmas spotlight. Mary has an important role to play in the Incarnation of the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity. She consents to God’s invitation conveyed by the angel (Luke 1:26-38). Elizabeth proclaims: “Most blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?” (Luke 1:42-43, emphasis added). Mary’s role as mother of God places her in a unique position in God’s redemptive plan.Without naming Mary, Paul asserts that “God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law” (Galatians 4:4). Paul’s further statement that “God sent the spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying out ‘Abba, Father!’“ helps us realize that Mary is mother to all the brothers and sisters of Jesus. Some theologians also insist that Mary’s motherhood of Jesus is an important element in God’s creative plan. God’s “first” thought in creating was Jesus. Jesus, the incarnate Word, is the one who could give God perfect love and worship on behalf of all creation. As Jesus was “first” in God’s mind, Mary was “second” insofar as she was chosen from all eternity to be his mother. The precise title “Mother of God” goes back at least to the third or fourth century. In the Greek form Theotokos (God-bearer), it became the touchstone of the Church’s teaching about the Incarnation. The Council of Ephesus in 431 insisted that the holy Fathers were right in calling the holy virgin Theotokos. At the end of this particular session, crowds of people marched through the street shouting: “Praised be the Theotokos!” The tradition reaches to our own day. In its chapter on Mary’s role in the Church, Vatican II’s Dogmatic Constitution on the Church calls Mary “Mother of God” 12 times.Other themes come together at today’s celebration. It is the Octave of Christmas: Our remembrance of Mary’s divine motherhood injects a further note of Christmas joy. It is a day of prayer for world peace: Mary is the mother of the Prince of Peace. It is the first day of a new year: Mary continues to bring new life to her children—who are also God’s children.
