DEAR PARISHIONERS...
With this week, we begin the second part of Lent. The temptation is to ask, “How am I doing?” Let us remember that Lent is a journey, maybe not a straight path, and the Lord invites us to make the journey with Him. The journey itself is a gift. It is our desire to walk more closely with Him and to be transformed to be more like Jesus.
Each day's gospel will now be from the Gospel according to John. We will hear the battle between the forces of Darkness and the Light. The opposition to Jesus mounts. It is inevitable that he will be killed. But, we know that ultimately Jesus conquers sin for us. Who among us has not tried to conquer sin in our lives and has failed? As Jesus walks His journey, we, too, must walk ours. We grow in gratitude and grace as we experience more deeply that this is all "for me." May we walk closely with Jesus this last half of Lent because the gift of transformation is wrapped within it.
This Tuesday is St. Patrick’s Day. Patrick was born around 385 in Scotland. As a boy of fourteen or so, he was captured and taken to Ireland as a slave to herd and tend sheep. Patrick's captivity lasted until he was twenty, when he escaped after having a dream from God in which he was told to leave Ireland and study for the priesthood, which he did in Britain. Patrick was ordained a priest and later, he was ordained a bishop, and was sent to take the Gospel to Ireland in 433. Patrick began preaching the Gospel throughout Ireland, converting many. Patrick preached and converted all of Ireland for 40 years. He worked many miracles and wrote of his love for God in Confessions. He was a humble, pious, gentle man, whose love and total devotion to and trust in God is a shining example to each of us. He feared nothing, not even death, so complete was his trust in God, and of the importance of his mission. St. Patrick died March 17, 461. So what’s with the shamrock? Patrick used the shamrock to explain the Trinity, and this has been associated with him and the Irish since then. Speaking of St. Patrick’s Day, Fr. Luke Ferris will speak to us on prayer on Tuesday, March 17, St. Patrick’s Day at 6:45pm. Afterwards, there will be a social time with treats. Maybe they’ll be green! If you haven’t had a chance to check out Soup and Study, it’s not too late. The Tuesday Soup and Study runs this week and next at noon. Our special Condensed Soup and Study is this next Saturday evening, March 21 following Saturday’s 5pm Mass. A great talk by Brian Smith on the History of the Church and great homemade soup! Come and enjoy!
Continued blessings on your Lenten journey,
Betty Schwandt, Pastoral Associate

MARCH 15, 2015 FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT | 5
Reflecting on the Scriptures God, who is rich in mercy, because of the great love he had for us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, brought us to life with Christ — by grace you have been saved — raised us up with him, and seated us with him in the heavens in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come He might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not from you; it is the gift of God; it is not from works, so no one may boast. For we are his handiwork, created in Christ Jesus for the good works that God has prepared in advance, that we should live in them. --- Eph. 2:4-10
Interestingly---and incongruously---in the middle of Lent we celebrate “Laetare” or “Rejoice” Sunday. It comes at the halfway point of Lent and offers a respite as well as reflection on our cause for joy in this season of penance. So what is the cause for my rejoicing? God reaches out in amazing and powerful ways with mercy, always calling to me to return to Him, to give me the gift of salvation; that is God’s grace!
I rejoice in the Lord for His Grace! It cannot be earned by my actions or works. Yet living in and through Christ, my life manifests the fruit of living in Him by loving and serving others. That’s how I’m able to be kind to the not-so-kind, forgiving and merciful when I may least wish to. Without the grace of God, I am a mess---a mix of fear, insecurity, arrogance, and self-centeredness. My lifestyle becomes one of living in the darkness, spoken of in today’s Gospel. If I refuse to come into the light of the Lord, the truth, my life becomes so messy that I work to hide it, like a kid shoving their mess in the closet--and in the dark. A path that will lead me to eternal darkness.
Lent is about living in the Light of Christ, seeking His mercy, accepting His grace. God desires me to live His grace, to freely choose to live in a way that I reflect the loving, giving, and graciousness of God. He wants me to live so that my entire life proclaims His love and mercy. People should be able to meet me and experience in the way I treat them that God’s grace, His amazing love, is touching them.
God’s love isn’t a result of my being well-behaved, doing my duty, or worshiping regularly. God loves me
because God is God, and God is love. His love shines on the good and the bad--and His mercy toward me is
unearned. God loves lavishly and indiscriminately. And this is my reason to rejoice mid-Lent. God’s grace is so
big, so wide, that He loves me every step of Lent, every step on the journey to the cross. Amazing grace.

Anointing of the Sick at all Masses this weekend.
Anointing of the Sick II: Celebrating the Sacrament The sacrament of the anointing of the sick is a celebration in which those who are seriously ill or infirm are surrounded and supported by other members of the Christian community, whether at home or in the house of the church (for those who can leave their beds and come here). In song and in silence, with scriptures and prayers, we strengthen the bonds of love and faith that are stronger than the most lethal disease and more powerful even than death. The sacrament may be celebrated in the context of a Mass, or on its own, depending on the needs of the person who is sick. The celebration opens with brief introductory rites that help us remember that God is with us and that we are the body of Christ. Then follows a liturgy of the word, in which we hear scriptures that shed light on the meaning of sickness and suffering and the compassion of our God, who suffers with us. Depending on the needs of the person who is sick, one brief passage or two or three readings and a psalm may be used. A homily may be preached, too. Then the rite continues. The gathered church surrounds the person who is sick with the prayer of faith. In response to God’s word, a litany is prayed. Then, the priest does the laying on of hands, an ancient sign of the moving of the Holy Spirit to heal and save. This is done in silence. Then a prayer is said over the oil of the sick. Finally, the priest anoints the head and the hands, and sometimes other parts of the body (the feet, for example, or the part of the body that is in pain) of the one who is sick. While anointing the sick person’s head, the priest says “Through this holy anointing, may the Lord in his love and mercy help you with the grace of the Holy Spirit.” And all answer “Amen!” While anointing the hands, the priest says, “May the Lord who frees you from sin save you and raise you up.” And again, all answer “Amen!” If other parts of the body are anointed, no words are said. A final prayer is then said. The liturgy of the Eucharist, or simply the giving of communion, may follow. Or the rite ends with a blessing. If you or someone you know is in need of the anointing, please call the parish office.

MARCH 15, 2015 FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT| 8
WORKING WITH THE SCRIPTURES – Do you find yourself closing your office door when
you hear someone coming down the hall? And if so,
why? Is it because you’re working hard and don’t
want to be interrupted? Or could it be that you’re
‘hardly working’ and don’t want to be caught?
When you’re on your computer and find yourself
hiding the screen is it because you’re working on
sensitive issues involving corporate security and
confidentiality? Or is it because you’re sensitive to
the fact that you’re on a prohibited website and you
feel less than secure and confident about what will
happen if your boss finds out? In other words, what
are the things you would rather do in the ‘darkness’
than in the ‘light’?
There was once a large furniture store. Every two or
three years the store was destroyed by fire. And
every two or three years the store was rebuilt, bigger
and better, with the insurance money the owners
received because of the fire. While no one would
have suggested that there was anything sinister afoot
it was noted that, in addition to the relative
predictability of the occurrences, the fires almost
always started at night.
Nicodemus came to Jesus at night in order to avoid
risk to his reputation. It probably would have been
safer for him to stay away altogether but there was
something about Jesus that drew him. Later
Nicodemus would come again, in the light, to
prepare Jesus’ body for burial. Nicodemus would
move out of the darkness. He would no longer feel
the need to close his door or to hide his relationship
with the light.
Corrupt business practices and banking arrangements
conducted in language that will later be sanitized by
corporate lawyers; files encrypted and hidden behind
changing passwords to protect against the possibility
of incriminating information getting into the wrong
hands; political gifts awarded to insure silence about
what is better left unspoken; unexplained fires and
puzzling accounting practices. Works done in
darkness so that they “…might not be exposed.” Do
we conduct our affairs in the light? Or are we more
nocturnal in our habits?

A HEART FULL OF SOUL: PRAYING AS A COUPLE
Deacon Steve and Peg VandeHey March 23, 2015
6:30 pm St. Raphael Church
Deacon Steve and Peg are married almost 43 years, have raised their three children, all who are married, and are now enjoying the
blessing of 18 grandchildren. Steve is a Pastoral Associate at the Catholic Tri-Parishes in Calumet County. Peg is the Family & Married Life Coordinator at the Diocese of Green Bay. They live in Kaukauna and are members of St. Katherine Drexel Parish.
There are a variety of ways to pray. Individuals have personal preferences. But what about praying as a couple. Married couples often express a desire to deepen their prayer life, or perhaps even wish to begin a prayer and don’t know how. Couples can discover ways to pray that each will find meaningful. The presentation will cover aspects of prayer and various ways to pray through stories, songs and scripture.
