A Letter from Father Holz

Dear Parishioners, This week’s Gospel message speaks about the permanence of the Sacrament of Marriage. That is the goal, that is what the couple, and we as a parish, pray for. We offer a Pre-Cana program in order that our couples look at the sacrament as participation in the work and love of God, and not simply a contract. We obviously view this union, this sacrament, with a different lens than the larger society views it. With each interview, and then reiterated at each wedding, we identify the three things that a Catholic marriage aims for. I teach the children saying the three F’s. Faithful – to each other. All other unions relegated to a lower place. Not that the two become part of a bigger group, or special among others, the two become one. Forever – is intended by each for each other. We don’t enter into the sacraments with any conditions or “except fors.” I intend that my spouse be able to make lifetime decisions based on my promise to be there with them. Fruitful – open to the possibility of children. Children which will increase the capacity of the love of each, for their children, and increase the love of each for each other as the person who loves their child as they do. We know that we need the help of God to love in this way, and to love properly. We congratulate those who have just completed our program, and we congratulate all those married couples in our parish setting the example for us. We are St. Raphael’s and we are in this together. God bless,

Fr. Holz

Blessing of the Animals - We will be having our annual Blessing of the Animals this Monday, The Memorial of St. Francis of Assisi. Once again, it will be held in Mary’s Garden in front of the rectory. Masks are optional for pets who have been vaccinated. (Just kidding!) Religious Education of our Children – Resumes this Sunday. Obviously, with their safety always as a priority, there will be additional protocols in place this year. Please see the Religious Ed. page of this bulletin. We are still in need of catechists, our volunteers are so wonderful that many are doubling (or tripling) up on their expressions of love for the children. Confirmations - During the last two weeks I had the honor of conferring the Sacrament of Confirmation on our young people. This is usually reserved for the Bishop. I am grateful to the Bishop for allowing me this privilege this year, we are grateful to God’s Church wherein the Sacraments are effective, and we are grateful to God who instituted all the Sacraments. We are also so grateful to the many catechists and instructors who taught this year in ways neither they, nor I, ever imagined Religious Education being taught here at St. Raphael’s. Finally, we are grateful to the Director of Religious Ed., Ms. Ellen Fox, for devising and coordinating the last year in ways that are not taught in the Seminary or theology classes.

“And the two shall become one flesh”

Getting Ready for Next Sunday October 10, 2021 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time Cycle B

Scripture Readings ONLINE The website of the National Council of Catholic Bishops provides the text of the Scripture Readings. Go to: www.usccb.org . Click on Readings, then on the date.

Reflections on Next Sunday’s Scripture Readings

Wisdom 7:7-11 Psalm 90 Hebrews 4:12-13 Mark 10:17-30

Wisdom is often regarded as a personal attribute, something that people honor in others. Today's readings understand wisdom as a gift that must benefit the community. Expertise is centrifugal, moving from one person out to the entire population.

The Book of Wisdom chooses the wise and benevolent king as the model of human perfection. This ruler prefers wisdom to wealth, health, beauty, and even kingship itself. The ideal leader employs wisdom for the common good.

The responsorial psalm is a meditation on the value of human life. In verse twelve, the psalmist prays for wisdom of heart -- the ability to live in balanced relationship with God and others. Wisdom means that the community experiences the graciousness of God's presence. Wisdom also implies that God acknowledges human work by giving it fullness and meaning.

Mark depicts a Jesus who is recognized for his wisdom. Jesus guides the man who wishes to gain eternal life. Wisdom requires that one first look to the common good. The man questioning Jesus has already achieved this level by keeping the commandments. Wisdom's second demand is much more challenging, giving up everything that distracts him from following Jesus. To sell one's possessions and give to the poor is a freeing experience that results in great service to the community.

Wisdom is required in all real life situations. Parents become wise in experience and use that grace to guide their children. Teachers share knowledge with their students, but even more, they share wisdom. The truly wise see their expertise not as an honor to be recognized, but as a gift to be shared. \

-- John Craghan, Th.D., S.S.L. Copyright 1997, Liguori Publications / Liguori, MO 63057-9999

For reflection…

Jesus looked with love at the man seeking eternal life, inviting him to let go of his possessions and to come, follow him. Jesus does the same with us. How does this make you feel? What areas of your life might still be “off limits” to God?

What is the one more thing Jesus is asking of you at this moment in time? Ask for Jesus’ help so that it will not become an impossible stumbling block. Think of an area in your life where it would help if you had wisdom. Tell God what the gift would mean to you. “The word of God is living and effective..” How does the word of God affect your life?
