A SHORT HISTORY OF ST. ROCH CHURCH AND FEAST

Before there was a St. Roch Catholic Church, there was a St. Roch Society and a St. Roch Feast. In a town south of Naples, Morra de Sanctis, St. Roch was the patron of the Church. He was a French-man who made a pilgrimage to Rome and on the way, he cared for people stricken by the plague. Eventually, he fell sick himself, but a faithful dog brought him food daily to help him recover. Italian immigrants who settled in Chickahominy, East Port Chester (Byram) and Port Chester formed the “Societa Morresa di San Rocco” a mutual aid society. They gathered yearly in mid-August to celebrate the feast day of their patron saint, St. Roch.

The Catholics of Chickahominy walked to Sacred Heart Church in Byram for Mass, which during the winter months was a real hard-ship, especially for the children. Father Sullivan, pastor of Sacred Heart, and Angelo Roina, president of the Saint Roch Society, contacted the Bishop about building a church in the community.

The property was purchased in 1918, and most of the Morrese parishioners were masons and stonecutters but anyone and every-one from the community who desired to help were put to work. The foundation of the church was built, but because there was no more money, a roof was placed over the top and a chapel was furnished with an altar and pews. The chapel was dedicated on May 14, 1922.

Father Rice, assistant pastor of Sacred Heart, came every Saturday morning to instruct the children in religion, and to prepare them for the sacraments. Either Father Sullivan or Father Rice celebrated one Mass each Sunday in the chapel. Many societies in the parish did volunteer work and held fundraisers. The St. Roch Society, the St. John Society, the Society of Mount Carmel, the

Society of St. Gerard, the Children of Mary, the St. Anne Sodality, and the Holy Name Society each hosted celebrations and/or feasts for their particular saints. The largest of these was the St. Roch feast, held in August of each year. By 1928, $5,000 had been saved, and work was able to begin on the upper church.

By 1937, the new church was financially able to stand independent-ly of Sacred Heart. The first pastor of the newly incorporated church was Fr. Vincent Finn. He had to rent an apartment, for there was not yet a rectory. With much volunteer work, he built the rectory. Later a convent for the Sisters of St. John the Baptist was added through a purchase of the Thomas Monti house and, in 1952, a nursery school was started. Property was purchased for a school site and St. Roch School opened in 1958. Grigg Avenue was renamed “ST. ROCH AVENUE”.

Due to the diminished numbers in vocations, the Sisters of St. John were not able to remain at the school and no other orders of Sisters were available to take on the school. Sadly, the school closed in June, 1969, but was renamed the Christian Life Center, and today serves as the Religious Education Center. The first floor is used by the YMCA Magic Rainbow Nursery School.

Page 8: St. Roch Church Roch Book 2017.pdf · A SHORT HISTORY OF ST. ROCH CHURCH AND FEAST Before there was a St. Roch Catholic Church, there was a St. Roch Society and a St. Roch Feast.

St. Roch was born in Montpellier, at the French border of Italy in 1295. His father was governor of the city, but when both his parents died when he was 20 years old, Rocke (as his name was spelled) was named governor. But instead, he gave away all his earthly goods to the poor, and set out as a mendicant pilgrim for Rome.

At the time, Italy was experiencing an epidemic of plague, and Rocke was very dili-gent in tending the sick in the public hospitals in Acquapendente, Cesena, Remini, Novara, and Rome. As he prayed over people, making the sign of the cross on the forehead of the afflicted, it is said that many had miraculous cures from just the touch of his hand. It is said that Rocke was marked with a red mark in the shape of a cross on his breast when he was born. The mark grew as he did, and therefore it is believed that he was blessed by God from birth.

While ministering to the sick in Piacenza, Rocke himself finally fell ill. He was ex-pelled from the town, and withdrew into a forest. He fashioned a small shelter for himself and a fresh water spring miraculously sprang up. He would have perished if not for a dog who visited him, bringing him bread and licking his wounds. The owner of the dog, a nobleman named Gothard Palastrelli, followed his hunting dog, and discovered St. Roch and became his acolyte.

After his recovery, he returned to Montpellier where his uncle, who had taken over as governor, had him thrown in prison and charged as a spy. He never told anyone who he was, and languished in prison for five years before he died in 1327. After his death, some townspeople recognized who he was from his birthmark, and began to refer to him as a saint. Even though the Scuola Grande di San Rocco, and the adjacent Church of San Rocco in Venice, were named for him shortly after his death, Roch was not actually named a saint until January 5, 1577 by Pope Gregory XIV.

He also helped in parish ministry on weekends and directed spiritual seminars for laymen´s societ-ies.

He arrived to the Bridgeport Diocese in January 2007 and was named Pa-rochial Vicar of St. Mary Parish, Stamford. In September 2008 he became Administrator of the same parish. In June 2009 Bishop Lori received him formally into the diocese and appointed him Pastor of St. Mary Parish. In July of 2014 Most Rev. Frank Caggiano sent him to St. Paul Univer-sity, Ottawa, ON, Canada, to study for a Licentiate Degree in Canon Law. He completed his Licentiate Degree in Canon Law in June 2016. On June 30, 2016, Bishop Frank Caggiano appointed him as 9th Pastor of St. Roch Parish and Adjutant Judicial Vicar of the Diocesan Tribunal.
