Dear Brothers and Sisters,
This Lenten season finds us just like the people of Israel crossing the desert with Moses. The people felt hungry, thirsty, and, above all, insecure. They often panic, grumble, murmur, and even want to kill Moses because of the imminent dangers of death. However, Moses and Aaron trusted in God’s words every time they spoke with him. They trusted in God’s provisions to lead the people towards the Promised Land. God worked wonders in the desert, saving his people from death. We are preparing to celebrate these Passover events at the Easter Vigil. The people of God experienced this passage from death to life, from grumbling to blessings, and from famine to being full of the fruits of the land.
These sufferings and struggles are real today in our society. The coronavirus and its multiple side-effect precariousness invite us to assume the attitude of Moses and Aaron in the desert. We must focus on the essentials to survive in body and in spirit in the midst of these extremely difficult moments. Through the media, we may surely know by now what is best to stay physically healthy. Now, although we are not able to gather at our parish, we must also look for ways to stay spiritually fed and healthy. For this, we need trust and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ as Moses and Aaron had. Many of us may be feeling the extreme need to feed ourselves through the sacrament of the Eucharist. Others may struggle in not being able to receive other sacraments. Others may struggle not being able to join in fellowship our brothers and sisters in Christ. All these struggles may deeply affect our spiritual health. However, we can feed our spirit in this season of Lent with different spiritual exercises. For instance, prayer at home with our family is one of the most important forms of relationship with God. Spiritual reading through the sacred scripture, the life of a saint, or a spiritual meditation book are different ways to search for the source of nourishment for our spirit. Through the media, we can also watch and listen to the Mass or different reflections on the Mass. Let us remember that whatever our eyes see and our ears hear directly affect our soul. So, let us search for spiritual nourishment in these spiritual sources through the different Catholic channels that our Church provides. These may strengthen our faith and trust in our Lord Jesus Christ in the midst of these challenging moments.
Let us be the living presence of our Church of St. Rose of Lima wherever we may find ourselves confined. Our church building may be closed, but our faith can still be alive through the living witnesses of our faithful parishioners.
Queridos hermanos y hermanas,
Este tiempo de Cuaresma nos encontramos como el pueblo de Israel cruzando el desierto con Moisés. El pueblo de Israel se sentía hambrienta, sedienta y, sobre todo, insegura. A menudo entraban en pánico, se quejaban, murmuraban e incluso a veces querían matar a Moisés debido a los inminentes peligros de muerte. Sin embargo, Moisés y Aarón confiaron en las palabras de Dios cada vez que hablaban con él. Confiaron en las provisiones de Dios para guiar a la gente hacia la Tierra Prometida. Dios hizo maravillas en el desierto salvando a su pueblo de la muerte. Nos estamos preparando para celebrar estos acontecimientos de salvación en la Vigilia Pascual. El pueblo de Dios experimentó este pasaje de la muerte a la vida, de las quejas a las bendiciones, y de la hambruna a estar lleno de los frutos de la tierra.
Estos sufrimientos y estas luchas son reales hoy en nuestra sociedad. El coronavirus y sus efectos secundarios de mucha precariedad nos invitan a asumir la actitud de Moisés y Aarón en el desierto. Debemos centrarnos en lo esencial para sobrevivir en cuerpo y espíritu en medio de estos momentos extremadamente difíciles. A través de los medios, seguramente ya sabremos qué es lo mejor para mantenernos físicamente saludables. Ahora, aunque no podemos reunirnos en nuestra parroquia, debemos buscar formas de mantenernos espiritualmente alimentados y saludables. Para esto, necesitamos confianza y fe en nuestro Señor Jesucristo como lo hicieron Moisés y Aarón. Muchos de nosotros podemos sentir la extrema necesidad de alimentarnos a través del sacramento de la Eucaristía. Otros pueden tener dificultades por no poder recibir otros sacramentos. Otros pueden tener dificultades por no poder reunirse en comunión con nuestros hermanos y hermanas en Cristo. Todas estas dificultades pueden afectar profundamente nuestra salud espiritual. Sin embargo, podemos alimentar nuestro espíritu en este tiempo de Cuaresma con diferentes ejercicios espirituales. Por ejemplo, la oración en casa con nuestra familia es una de las formas más importantes de relación con Dios. La lectura espiritual a través de las Sagradas Escrituras, la vida de un santo o un libro de meditación espiritual son diferentes maneras de buscar la fuente de alimento para nuestro espíritu. A través de los medios de comunicación, también podemos ver y escuchar la Misa o diferentes reflexiones sobre la Misa. Recordemos que lo que ven nuestros ojos y nuestros oídos afectan directamente nuestra alma. Entonces, busquemos alimentos espirituales en estas fuentes espirituales a través de los diferentes canales católicos que ofrece nuestra Iglesia Católica. Estos pueden fortalecer nuestra fe y confianza en nuestro Señor Jesucristo en medio de estos momentos desafiantes.
Seamos la presencia viva de nuestra Iglesia de Santa Rosa de Lima donde sea que nos encontremos confinados. El edificio de nuestra iglesia puede estar cerrado, pero nuestra fe aún puede estar viva a través del testimonio de nuestros feligreses.
