THE SAINT ROSE STORY OF $1,000“The year 1920 had opened the doors of opportunity for women across this vast nation, and so it seems only fitting that this same year should also be the time for thefounding of a Catholic women’s college in the capital area of New York State.

Earlier that year, Monsignor Joseph A. Delaney, vicar-general of the Roman CatholicDiocese of Albany, contacted Sr. Blanche Rooney of the Sisters of Saint

Joseph of Carondelet. . . . It was his conviction that the Sisters of SaintJoseph should formulate a strategy whereby a Catholic college forwomen be established in upper New York State.

Enthralled by the challenge, Sr. Blanche sought and received the permission from her superiors to pursue this matter. . . . Shortly thereafter, upon application to the New York State Education Department for the authority to establish such an institution, the Board of Regents, on June 28, 1920, granted a provisional charter

sanctioning The College of Saint Rose to issue bachelor degrees in arts, science and music.

The Sisters of Saint Joseph purchased the William Keeler estate for the site of thefledgling college. Located at 979 Madison Avenue in Albany’s Pine Hillssection, the estate was made up of a three-story building, a garageand a pine grove.

How was Sr. Blanche, armed with a grand total of $1,000, to transform this residential cluster into a dormitory, dining room, chapel, classrooms and auditorium, and all by an opening day already slated for September?

Unfazed and armed with determination, faith, gifts of various sorts from a growing listof benefactors and volunteer assistance, she andthe Sisters of Saint Joseph met the task. BetweenMarch 4, 1920, when they took possession of theMadison Avenue property, and September 22,1920, when the first freshman class crossed the threshold, the Keeler residence had virtuallydisappeared. In its place was The College of Saint Rose, named to honor the first Americancanonized saint - St. Rose of Lima.

The College of Saint Rose has come a long wayfrom its inception when Sr. Blanche dreamed dreams and when nineteen studentscame to the Madison Avenue location seeking academic excellence, vibrant challenges, intellectual satisfaction and an opportunity for growth.”

What has not changed at Saint Rose is the impact of determination, faith and the difference $1,000 can make. Your leadership gift of $1,000 or greater will makea significant impact in the lives of today’s Saint Rose students and will help

the College meet its most compelling needs of affordability and accessibility. Your gift isan investment in the Saint Rose of today andtomorrow. It will also, in a way, pay tribute to the pioneers of Saint Rose whose $1,000started it all. There is no doubt that thedreams and aspirations of one or a few canimpact the lives of thousands.

Kaitlyn Louise Hardman ’15 Accounting“If I did not receive alumni support to attend The College of Saint Rose, I honestlywould not be able to afford to be here. Donors to The Saint Rose Fund help in somany more ways than they may think; I know in my heart that students like mewould not be able to achieve their goals and dreams without the generous

commitment and loyalty of the Saint Rose family. I could never say thank you enoughfor what you have given me.”

Maire Cunningham ’14 History“I cannot thank you enough for providing me the opportunity to attend this institution. The people I have met and the experiences I have had here at Saint Rose have allowed me to reach my true potential. I am constantly striving to pushfurther and aim higher in my academic studies . The College of Saint Rose and the

generosity of our alumni donors have given me the gift of an education. Without suchan education, I genuinely believe I would not be as successful as I have been, and I would

not be able to pursue a career in doing something that I truly love.”

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

Emily Gydesen ’13, G’13 Business Administration (Dual Degree B.S./M.B.A.) “Saint Rose has expanded my ability to think critically, and given me the knowledgeand confidence to make good decisions academically. I was drawn to Saint Rose because I could see the investments that alumni and donors were making in theschool; the dedication to enhancing student experiences was tangible in the growth

of the campus, improvements to classroom technology, and the ever-expanding opportunities offered. With the financial support from our alumni and friends, I was been

able to focus entirely on my studies and having the fullest experience of campus life.”
