MASS INTENTIONS FOR THE WEEK

Page 3: Saint Rose of Lima Catholic Church

Q&A Q: Does the directive from the Archdiocese of St.

Louis mean that I will no longer be able to receive Holy Communion on the tongue and that I will HAVE to receive Holy Communion in my hand? A: Absolutely not. No one can make you receive Holy Com-

munion in the hand. Receiving Holy Communion in the hand is an option - nothing more, nothing less. In addition, the ink on the directive wasn't even dry yet when reports began circulating indicating that receiving Holy Communion on the tongue is no more unsanitary than receiving Holy Communion in your hand. In fact, some claim that your hands come into many more germs than your tongue does. Most indications are that it is a wash (no pun intended!) - that the chances of spreading germs or viruses are equal in both circumstances. Some people are wondering whether we should stop the distribution of Holy Com-munion altogether. Again - absolutely not! People who are in-fected with the coronavirus shouldn't be at Mass. The chances of contracting the virus are more pronounced by an infected person just being around, not by the distribution of Holy Com-munion. That's why infected people should isolate themselves. As in all things common sense should prevail. Again, if the cir-cumstances worsen, we'll take the appropriate steps. [Fr. Anderson]

THIS WEEK'S Q.U.O.T.E “Right is right even if no one is doing it; wrong is wrong

even if everyone is doing it.” St Augustine

SRLS 25th ANNUAL SCHOOL AUCTION SATURDAY, MARCH 7, 2020 I KNIGHTS of COLUMBUS HALL

What a blessing it is to be able to give you the following preliminary Auction report. Even the initial announcement that the Auction had raised a minimum of $105,000 was a blessing. As soon as all of the bills are in and all the payments made we'll have a definite dollar amount. I'm guessing the fact that St. Rose has now raised more than $2 million over the years in Auction proceeds is the most significant accomplishment this year. Although most of those funds have been spent over the years, remember that the "School Reserve Fund" (currently at $250,000) mostly came from the net proceeds of previous Auctions. Having such an abundant nest-egg is surely heartening! May we hang on to that bundle for a long time to come! Of course, no event on the scale of our annual Auction is without a headache or two. This year one of those headaches was leaving the SMCI full-page sponsor ad out of the Auction book. Mea culpa! Thanks, SMCI, for being so understanding! Likewise, so many wonderful things happen at the Auction, that a list of them all is impossible. But here are some high-lights: Dave Thomas won the 50/50 drawing and its $2,190 prize - and he donated it back to the Auction! God bless you, Dave, for your wonderful generosity! Likewise for Chloe DeClue who won the Heads-or-Tails raffle and donated back her $250 prize. God love ya! Special recognition was given to the founders of the SRLS Auction who, way back in 1996, started the Auctions with a determination and enthusiasm which continues even to today! God bless Amy Choate, Connie Tolbert, Kimberly Rotter, Diane Gibson, Donna Reando, Theresa Wilkinson, Julia Ott, and Kimberly Brown. In addition, special apprecia-tion was extended to Gladys Drummond for the thousands of Auction dinners she has prepared over the years, and to Bob Roth who says "Yes!" first and then asks "What do you need?" when setting up for the Auction at the KC Hall. A full financial report should be available by next week's bulletin. Please remember that 50% of the proceeds go into the general school subsidy; 25% go into the School Reserve Fund; 15% go into our most-generous Adopt-An-Angel program; and 10% go into a school fix-up project which, at the present time, is the painting of the school cafeteria kitchen ceiling.

With Sympathy All of us at St. Rose extend our heartfelt sym-pathy to the family and friends of David Blum

who was buried from St. Rose this past Tuesday. May he rest in peace and may his family and friends find hope and consolation in the loving arms of the Lord.

We received the wonderful news that when he died, Paul Portell left a $5,000 bequest to St. Rose of Lima Parish, $5,000 to St. Rose of Lima School, and $2,000 to St. Rose's Calva-

ry Cemetery. What a fitting tribute to such a kind and generous St. Rose Parishioner! After discussing the gift with our School Principal, Kathey Compton, we agreed that both the Parish and the School will apply the grant to our school window project - a lasting indication of Paul's generosity and love for our Parish and School.

LENTEN REGULATIONS

for ALL CATHOLICS Ash Wednesday (February 26, 2020), all Fridays of Lent and Good Friday (April 10, 2020) are days of abstinence (refraining from meat) for all Catholics from age 14 onwards. On these two days, fast, as well as abstinence, is also obligatory for those from the ages of 18-59. Abstinence means refraining from meat. Fast means one full meal a day, with two smaller meals and nothing between meals (liquids are permitted). No Catholic will lightly excuse himself or herself from this obligation. We should strive to make all days of Lent a time of prayer and pen-ance.

CONFESS NOW & AVOID THE

EASTER RUSH!

The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass . . . a L e n t e n B u l l e t i n S e r i e s -

part 3 The Catechism of the Catholic Church continues to speak of the Mass in this way: [CCC #1364] In the New Testament, the memorial takes on new meaning. When the Church celebrates the Eucharist, she commemorates Christ's Passover, and it is made present. The sacrifice Christ offered once for all on the cross remains ever present. "As often as the sacrifice of the Cross by which 'Christ our Pasch has been sacrificed' is cele-brated on the altar, the work of our redemption is carried out." [CCC #1365] Because it is the memorial of Christ's Passo-ver, the Eucharist is also a sacrifice. The sacrificial character of the Eucharist is manifested in the very words of institution: "This is my body which is given for you" and "This cup which is poured out for you is the New Covenant in my blood." In the Eucharist Christ gives us the very body which He gave up for us on the cross, the very blood which He "poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins." [CCC #1366] The Eucharist is thus a sacrifice because it re-presents (makes present) the sacrifice of the cross, because it is its memorial and because it applies its fruit: [Christ], our Lord and God, was once and for all to offer Himself to God the Father by His death on the altar of the cross, to accomplish there an everlasting redemption. But be-cause His priesthood was not to end with His death, at the Last Supper "on the night when He was betrayed," [He wanted] to leave to His beloved spouse the Church a visible sacrifice (as the nature of man demands) by which the bloody sacrifice which he was to accomplish once for all on the cross would be re-presented, its memory perpetuated until the end of the world, and its salutary power be applied to the forgiveness of the sins we daily commit. [ . . . to be continued next week]

As more reservations come in asking to use St. Rose Hall, I thought I would remind everyone that one of the requirements for using the Hall for an event - as determined by our St. Rose Parish Council - is that you must be a registered, contributing member of St. Rose Parish. For this purpose it means that you must be regularly using your Sunday envelope. Also, no one may reserve the Hall for someone else's use. Privileges carry with them responsibilities. It is a blessing to have a facility like our Parish Hall available for use, but the responsibility of finan-cially supporting the upkeep of our Parish is part of the agree-ment. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

HOLINESS 9 Therapeutic Benefits of Fasting

More and more people are discovering that fasting, especially during Lent, isn‟t just good for the body, but for the mind and spirit as well. During the season of Lent, the Church invites Christians to renounce over-indulgence. Abstaining from food has been the preferred expression of this spirit of repentance over the centuries. Today many Christians reject or have given up on fasting, but they‟re missing out. If you think Lenten fasting isn‟t for you, here are nine reasons to consider it… 1) IT'S A FACE-LIFT FOR THE SOUL - At the start of Lent, the Church gives a clarion call to “convert and believe in the Gospel” (see Mk 1:15). While conversion is firstly the work of the Holy Spirit, it also requires our collaboration. The holy Curé of Ars, who himself endlessly fasted, once said, “One confession well-made is worth more than three weeks on bread and water”! According to Mt 6:1-18, three methods are traditionally recognized to help us participate in this miracu-lous conversion of heart: prayer, alms, and fasting. 2) IT'S A PATH TO JOY - By depriving ourselves of a pleas-ure we‟re attached to, we allow a deeper craving to rise up within us: a hunger for God. Sin is about turning ourselves away from our Creator and toward the idols we‟ve created. Fasting helps to whet that original appetite, that is, to turn back to God and our love of creation through him. “Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied” (see Mt 5:6): that‟s the blessedness promised to those who crave to be attuned to the heart of God and savor the joy of his presence. 3) IT HELPS ATTUNE US TO GOD - It‟s Christ who sets the tone by asking us to make our desires chime with his (Phil 2:5:11). This gradual attunement is the conquest of true liber-ation from the slavery of worldly things, from selfishness and possessive love. We need to establish harmony in relation-ship to every aspect of our lives. In this way, we refocus our relationship to God through prayer, and our relationship to others through material but also spiritual almsgiving: by in-structing the ignorant, counseling the hesitant, consoling the afflicted, correcting sinners, forgiving those who offend, bear-ing with difficult people, smiling at everyone, and praying for all. 4) IT HELPS US GROW IN THE VIRTUE OF TEMPERANCE - Fasting serves to acquire the virtue of temperance. Temper-ance ensures mastery of the will over our instincts and so allows the legitimate pleasure procured by material goods. But asceticism isn‟t a virtue in itself. While you might not be-come a saint without it, asceticism doesn‟t make you a saint! Pride is always on the prowl! So it‟s important to accompany fasting with acts of humility, thoughtfulness, and charity. [. . . to be continued next week I from Father Nicolas Buttet in Aleteia]

THIS WEEK'S POINT Belgium killed almost 3,000 people by euthanasia in 2019, including one child

March 6, 2020 (Society for the Protection of Unborn Children) - Earlier this week, Belgium‟s Euthanasia Commission an-nounced that 2,655 Belgians were killed by euthanasia in 2019, which was an increase of 12.5% compared to the previ-ous year. One child is confirmed to have been killed. This figure exposes a significant increase in the num-ber of Belgians killed by euthanasia since the death laws were introduced in 2002. In 2010, 954 Belgians were killed by eu-thanasia, showing a huge increase in deaths over the past nine years. Belgium has some of the world‟s most lax euthanasia laws which are not restricted to the terminally ill or to adults as children and people with psychiatric conditions are also eligi-ble to be killed there. Despite the lax laws already in place, lawmakers are currently inquiring into how to further expand legislation in order to permit euthanasia based on having a „completed life.‟ „Completed life‟ euthanasia would allow peo-ple to be killed if they feel their life is complete, regardless of age or any physical suffering. John Deighan, CEO of Society for the Protection of Unborn Children in Scotland, said: “The worsening situation in Belgium is an example of the „slippery slope‟ in operation. “Here in the UK, we cannot make the same mistake. We must oppose every move to legalize euthanasia and assisted sui-cide. That would be a tragic step towards creating a culture where people feel their best option in life is to die. There is no such thing as a „safe‟ law on assisted suicide. And we cannot hide behind the idea that it is always a „voluntary‟ act. Once assisted suicide is legal, disabled, sick and elderly people can easily be made to feel that they ought to choose death." The same is true for our own Country. For example in 2018 in Washington State, where assisted suicide is legal, 51% of people who were killed by assisted suicide said that being a burden on family, friends and caregivers was a reason to end their lives. And in Oregon in 2018, 54.2% of people killed by assisted suicide said that being a burden on family, friends and caregivers was a reason to end their lives. tion of Unborn Children]
