The desire to "be the best" goes beyond hobbies and into politics, the corporate world, and parenting comparisons at the park. This desire is as old as the human race, and it surely arose in Jesus' day. While Biblical society was significantly less open and upwardly mobile than our own, power was attractive. From what we know, many of Jesus' disciples had come from lowly backgrounds. Now they followed an increasingly popular rabbi who seemed primed to do something big. Jesus does his best to dissuade their high hopes by prophesying his own defeat. "The Son of Man is to be handed over ? and they will kill him." Internalizing the message proves challenging for the disciples, and their attention remains fixed on earthly glory. "They ? [discuss] among themselves on the way who was the greatest." True to style, Jesus flips their pretensions on their heads. "'If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all.'" We have heard these Biblical principles before. Do we believe them? In our professional lives, do we do whatever we can to get ahead, or are we concerned with the entire team succeeding? In the lives of our children, are we more concerned with victory or with building character? Jesus doesn't condemn success, but he reframes it. "'Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me.'" Today's Gospel is a reality check. In God's eyes, our success will not be measured by worldly output alone but by how much love and service we offer to others in the process.

REFLECTION

The Oscars. The Super Bowl. TV talent shows. Your son's

Little League championship. We live in a culture set on

competition. The desire to "be the best" goes beyond

hobbies and into politics, the corporate world, and

parenting comparisons at the park. This desire is as old as

the human race, and it surely arose in Jesus' day. While

Biblical society was significantly less open and upwardly

mobile than our own, power was attractive. From what we

know, many of Jesus' disciples had come from lowly

backgrounds. Now they followed an increasingly popular

rabbi who seemed primed to do something big.

Jesus does his best to dissuade their high hopes by

prophesying his own defeat. "The Son of Man is to be

handed over ? and they will kill him." Internalizing the

message proves challenging for the disciples, and their

attention remains fixed on earthly glory. "They ? [discuss]

among themselves on the way who was the greatest." True

to style, Jesus flips their pretensions on their heads. "'If

anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the

servant of all.'"

We have heard these Biblical principles before. Do we

believe them? In our professional lives, do we do whatever

we can to get ahead, or are we concerned with the entire

team succeeding? In the lives of our children, are we more

concerned with victory or with building character? Jesus

doesn't condemn success, but he reframes it. "'Whoever

receives one child such as this in my name, receives me.'"

Today's Gospel is a reality check. In God's eyes, our success

will not be measured by worldly output alone but by how

much love and service we offer to others in the process.

Sacrifice is not a word that many people like to hear. We think it means that we must give up something that we want. However, the litereal meaning of sacrifice is “to make holy,” from the words “sacer” = sacred and “facere” = to make. In other words, we make our lives holy by sharing our gifts in the service of God. ~Office of Stewardship & Annual Catholic Appeal

Born to a southern Italian farm family, the son of Grazio, a shepherd. At age 15 he entered the novitiate of the Capuchin friars in Morcone, and joined the order at age 19. Suffered several health problems, and at one point his family thought he had tuberculosis. Ordained at age 22 on August 10, 1910. While praying before a cross, he received the stigmata on September 20, 1918, the first priest ever to be so blessed. As word spread, especially after American soldiers brought home stories of Padre Pio following WWII, the priest himself became a point of pilgrimage for both the pious and the curious. He would hear confessions by the hour, reportedly able to read the consciences of those who held back. Reportedly able to bilocate, levitate,

and heal by touch. Founded the House for the Relief of Suffering in 1956, a hospital that serves 60,000 a year. In the 1920's he started a series of prayer groups that continue today with over 400,000 members worldwide. His canonization miracle involved the cure of Matteo Pio Colella, age 7, the son of a doctor who works in the House for Relief of Suffering, the hospital in San Giovanni Rotondo founded by Padre Pio. On the night of 20 June 2000, Matteo was admitted to the intensive care unit of the hospital with meningitis. By morning doctors had lost hope for him as nine of the boy´s internal organs had ceased to give signs of life. That night, during a prayer vigil attended by Matteo´s mother and some Capuchin friars of Padre Pio´s monastery, the child's condition improved suddenly. When he awoke from the coma, Matteo said that he had seen an elderly man with a white beard and a long, brown habit, who said to him: "Don´t worry, you will soon be cured." The miracle was approved by the Congregation and Pope John Paul II on 20 December 2001. St. Padre Pio was born May 25, 1887, at Pietrelcina, Benevento, Italy as Francesco Forgione. He died on September 23,1968, of natural causes. ~aquinasandmore.com

ALL ARE WELCOME!

FEAST DAY

SEPTEMBER 27 St. Vincent de Paul is much

more than a patron saint of thrift

shops! Young Vincent became a

priest hoping to advance and

rise above his modest

upbringing. His early ambition

amounted to little when he was

assigned to a poor rural parish.

Here he experienced a new joy

in his vocation. Hearing the profound deathbed confession of a

dying servant, Vincent became more convinced of the special

attention that must be given to the poor. In 1625, Vincent founded

the Congregation of the Mission for the purpose of caring for the

poor. Originally priests only, the mission expanded to include

groups of laity who provided for spiritual and material needs of

the poor in each parish. Nearly 400 hundred years later, his

legacy lives on!
