SCRIPTURE CORNER CALLED TO ACT IN GOD’S NAME “Let all the nations praise you!” (Psalm 67:4) today’s psalm response exclaims. In the psalms and other Hebrew scriptures, this kind of invocation is actually an invitation to God to act, to intervene in hu-man lives in a manner that will cause everyone—not just the Chosen People—to give praise. Stated a bit more strongly, it is something of a “put up or shut up” challenge to God, the sort of strong statement the psalmists of Israel, trusting in their intimate and loving relationship with God, were not afraid to make. The Gospel has its own exclamation, announcing the appearance of the Canaanite woman with “Behold!” (Matthew 15:22) “Behold!” is a scriptural flag that tells us that God is about to act or announce something through an individual or a situation. In the case of Jesus, God was going to act through this woman, whom nobody among Jesus’ followers would have believed to be an agent of the divine will. Like the psalmists, we might passively inform or perhaps even actively challenge God to do something so that everyone will come to belief, but God will always turn the tables on us. It becomes our calling, our duty (as it was for Jesus) to behold the situations and persons of our daily lives so that God can act through us, so the Kingdom can be announced through our living. LIVING AS MISSIONARY DISCIPLES This year, the Church will celebrate Catechetical Sunday on September 17, 2017. The 2017 theme will be "Living as Missionary Disciples." Those who the Community has designated to serve as catechists will be called forth to be commissioned for their ministry. Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful op-portunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical Sun-day is an opportunity for all to rededicate themselves to this mission as a community of faith. We will have a special commissioning service for all catechists at the 9:00 am and 5:30 pm Mass on September 17. THANK YOU to our catechists for their dedication and leadership to the faith for-mation of our children & teens here at St. Thomas.

Parents have the first responsibility for the education of their children. Parents have a grave responsibility to give good example to their children. Through the grace of the Sacrament of Matrimony, parents receive the responsibility and privilege of evangelizing their children. Parents have the mission of teaching their children to pray and to discover their vocation as children of God.

(Catechism of the Catholic Church #2223, #2225, and #2226, on the Role of the Parent). As parents, you have the primary role in the sacramental preparation process for your children. You will help your children grow in the faith as you prepare them for the re-ception of the sacraments. Your attendance at required events and Sunday Mass is important. In addition, your willingness, example, witness, and prayers make a differ-ence in your child’s faith formation.

FALL SCRIPTURE STUDY Isaiah - The View From Babylon “Wake up! Wake up! Arise Jerusalem.” (Is 51:17) More than 500 years before Jesus was born, the Jewish people lived in exile. Removed from their land, they questioned God and despaired of returning home. In these few chapters written during the Babylonian exile, Isaiah exhorts his people to see God at work among them. God is at work through the grand sweeps of history, but also in the hearts of His people. “For I, the Lord, am your God, the Holy One of Israel, your savior. I give Egypt as ransom for you, Ethio-pia and Seba in exchange for you. Because you are pre-cious in my eyes, and honored, and I love you.” (Is 43:3,4) How does someone feeling lost get reconnected with God? Join us in this study from the Book of Isaiah as we see how Isaiah addressed the fears and doubts of a peo-ple feeling apart and separated from a God mightily at work to draw them back to Him.
