St. Paul, in the second reading today, talks about know-ing how to live with abundance and knowing how to live in humble circumstances as well. Many people these days are having to make that shift from living with abundance to living more humbly. One day you have huge wealth in the stock market or some other fund, and the next day you have none or greatly

reduced assets. That is a very scary thing for people who are counting on those resources to retire or live. St. Paul continues, “I have learned the secret of being well fed and of going hun-gry, of living in abundance and of being in need. I can do all things in him who strengthens me.” That is his secret for coping with the volatility of life. Is it ours?

I remember when my Mom and Dad were going through the great depression (I was too young to remember it my-self). But I do remember them talking about it. Their secret was the same as St. Paul’s; they were rooted and grounded in their faith. They learned to do without. That may be a lesson we will need to learn again in our own culture and time. It has always been part of Christian spirituality and as-ceticism to learn to do without, to be selfless and sacrificial. We live in a culture that does not teach that. We are very much absorbed by our culture and so the counter-cultural message of Christianity has never been very well received, except among the poor. They have always re-joiced in the good news of Jesus as St. Paul does today. Maybe these difficult days can be a time of learning to assimilate the counter-cultural message of Christianity into our lives, by learning to do without so that we and oth-ers may live. It seems that if we do not learn the lessons of our faith, that our culture of conspicuous consumerism and materialism will teach us when it collapses, to live humbly just as we have lived with abun-dance. St. Paul also says, “Still, it was kind of you to share in my distress.” In our compassion for one another and the poor in our common distress we will find the power of Christ of which St. Paul speaks. We express the faith of St. Paul with his words even as we pray for healing at all the masses this weekend: “My God will fully supply whatever you need, in accord with his glorious riches in Christ Jesus. To our God and Father, glory forever and ever. Amen!”

In Jesus, in solidarity and compassion with all the poor,

Dear Friends,

“One day you have huge wealth... and the next day you have none.“

Guests and Visitors!

St. Thomas is here to compan-ion you on your faith journey. Come with us as we grow in closeness to Christ through liturgy, music, faith formation, special events, and countless ways to make a difference.

Would you like to become a Parishioner? Join us this weekend, October 19, at Wel-come Sunday after the 9:00 and 10:45 a.m. Masses, in the gym with Donuts.

Welcome...

Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time

To the wedding feast of your Son, good and gracious God, you have invited all the peoples of the world.

Open our community to all who seek you, and adorn it with that rich diversity which is your Spirit’s special gift. Let our assembly on each Lord’s Day bear witness as a living sign to the banquet of eternal life where all are welcome.

We ask this in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. Amen. From: Prayers for Sundays and Seasons, Liturgy Training Publications. www.ltp.org

C.A.R.E. CORNER

At any given time, we all struggle with physical ailments, with emotional turmoil, with spiritual voids or with difficult relationships. We know such struggles are universal and timeless. Scrip-ture gives us numerous examples of people who were sick or struggling. The Gospels are filled with stories of the blind, the lame, the deaf and those afflicted with leprosy. We don’t have to look far for stories of people shunned by their families and communities because of their sin. For all of these people, their afflictions were dev-astating. They were unable to move unaided, unable to work, unable to be a contributing mem-ber of their family and most likely seen as a drain on the resources of the larger community. For all these people, their primary focus was their affliction and their primary goal was to be healed. Their brokenness propelled them to seek restoration, wholeness and healing. And they believed such restoration required the assistance of God. Do we still believe this today?

STA Staff Teams Step Out for S.T.E.P. … and they need your support on October 26, 1:30 p.m. at All Saints Academy for our annual S.T.E.P. Walk. There are three components to S.T.E.P. There is a prayer service before the walk, enlightening exhibits (including cultural food) for all ages related to global poverty and its eradication, and, of course, the walk! Four St. Thomas staff teams are making the walk and praying for your support.

There are three ways to support your favorite team … and only one of them involves money!

Communication from the Bishop Dear Friends in Christ, As Catholics we are called to share our faith as missionaries. World Mission Sunday gathers sup-port for the pastoral and evangelizing programs and needs of more than 1,150 mission dioceses in Af-rica, Asia, the Pacific Islands, and remote regions of Latin America. The funds gathered on World Mission Sunday are distributed in the Pope’s name by the Society for the Propagation of the Faith—a Pontifical Mission Society. The Society for the Propagation of the Faith was founded in Lyons, France, in 1822 by a young French laywoman, Pauline Jaricot. Inspired by sto-ries she heard about missionary work in China, she felt called by the Lord to help the Catholic Church's worldwide missionary work. Pauline herself never traveled to the Missions, which, during her lifetime, consisted of the Missions in China and young dio-ceses in the United States. Pauline gathered friends and workers in a family silk mill into "circles of ten," asking each person to pray daily for the Mis-sions and sacrifice a penny-a-week (at that time, quite a large sacrifice!). From this idea emerged the Propagation of the Faith. In 1926, Pope Pius XI instituted Mission Sunday for the whole Church, and the first Worldwide Mis-sion Sunday collection was taken up in October, 1927. The next to last Sunday of October is cele-brated in all dioceses around the world as a feast of our Catholicity and our solidarity with Christians the world over. World Mission Sunday is one way Catholics can recognize our common responsibility for evangelization, spreading the good news of Je-sus Christ. A concept that originated in Pauline Jaricot’s desire to help all the world's missions in the 19th century is now the basic means of support for the Catholic Church's worldwide Missions! Again this year, I invite you to be generous to the special col-lection for World Mission Sunday. God bless you and your loved ones! Sincerely in Christ, J. Peter Sartain Bishop of Joliet

A panoramic picture of the whole school was taken outside on Friday, October 3. We held the pinwheels that we made for Peace Day. The kindergarten classes are learning about being good citizens, shapes, coins and numbers. We will be taking a field trip to Johansen’s farm this month. The first grade classes are saying the Rosary together every Friday. We gather in McSherry Hall and the Star of the Week leads one decade. In the classroom, we are learning to tell time, count coins, and the components of soils. Our second graders responded to the question “Describe what you would tell someone who didn’t attend All Saints Catholic Academy what second grade is like.” Some of the responses were as follows: lots of reading and writing paragraphs, we have lockers, we play games in math, we have Mass on Wednesday morning, we pray for people, we have computers and specials, we play games to learn, we learned about voting and voted on our class mascot.
