Joining the Company of Believers What will help you to believe? Today's scripture readings tell of faith
and doubt. They offer stories "recorded to help you believe," as the passage from John's Gospel (20:31) remarks today. There is an urgency about this. On this Second Sunday of Easter we are challenged to join the company of believers--countless men and women who witnessed the power of the apos-tles' faith.
There is no doubt that this power comes from Jesus Christ. The second reading, from the book of Revelation, reports John's mystical vision of the Son of Man, who proclaims, "Once I was dead, but now I live" (Revelation 1:18). The Gospel gathers everyone but Thomas to see the Risen Jesus and receive the Holy Spirit from him. Like Thomas, we who have come along later must have faith so that we can have life. Jubilee Year of Mercy, Sunday of Divine Mercy Last year on this Sunday, Pope Francis declared this year a Jubilee Year of Mercy. Saint John Paul II named the
Second Sunday of Easter "Sunday of Divine Mercy" in response to Saint Faustina Kowalska's Divine Mercy devotion, which offered spiritual comfort to hearts worldwide. But Francis challenges us to make that comfort we receive a gift we gladly share: "We are called to show mercy because mercy has first been shown to us." The clearest expression of merciful love, says Francis, is pardoning others. "At times how hard it seems to forgive!" he acknowledges. "And yet pardon is the instrument placed into our fragile hands to attain serenity of heart" (Misericordiae Vultus, 9). The neces-sary condition for living joyfully? "To let go of anger, wrath, violence, and revenge." TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION We return to our reflections on the rites of marriage with a brief con-
sideration of reforms from the Council of Trent. When the Protestant Ref-ormation took hold, the fairly recent achievements of the Church in regard to the sacrament of marriage were reviewed with a critical, reforming eye. In general, Protestants returned to an earlier view that marriage was a civil matter, although some said that the civil society had to be in harmony with Christian teaching. In the Catholic Church, the Council of Trent took the question up in 1563, and decided to shore up its teaching on the sacramen-tality of marriage. They identified many threats to this, including secret marriages and easy divorce. So they enacted laws that still govern our prac-tice today: to be valid, marriage consent must be exchanged in the presence of a priest and two witnesses. Ever since Trent, marriages must also be announced three weeks in advance to the community, and recorded in a register. In some places in the world, the "banns" are still posted in the public square. In the United States, parishes sometimes publish the "banns" in the bulletin.
Anyone who has ever watched a soap opera has seen the standard scene of a minister announcing gravely, "If there is anyone here present who sees any reason why these two should not be married . . ." This bit of drama has no place in the Catholic liturgy, but survives among Protestants who broke with us before Trent edited this cliff-hanger out of our public prayer. --Rev. An Easter Thanks
Each year as we plan for the Easter Trid‐uum, we on the Liturgy Committee try to anticipate everything that is needed for the different celebrations of Holy Week and Easter. Holy Thursday includes the washing of feet and the procession to the altar of repose in the Hall. Good Friday is not a Mass, so its elements are very different from what we do every day. The Easter Vigil has the lighting of the Easter candle, many Old Testament readings, baptisms and confirmation rites, and the celebration of the Eucharist. It takes many people working together.
I want to express my profound thanks to all who helped make Easter a grand cele‐bration. There were countless hours de‐voted to decorations, music, preparing texts, rehearsals, calling people, serving at liturgies, and making sure everyone could get in and out of the parking lots safely. From my point of view as pastor, a great burden was lifted off my shoulders as you and the parishioners who were involved in the Easter liturgies anticipated and fol‐lowed through on so many details.
I was so impressed by everyone work‐ing as a team that I think we should do this again next year.

San Juan Pablo II nombró al Segundo Domingo de Pascua "Domingo de la Divina Misericordia" en respuesta a la devoción de la Divina Misericordia de santa Faustina Kowalska que ofrece consuelo espiritual a los cora-zones en todo el mundo. Pero el Papa Francisco nos desafía a hacer que el con-suelo que recibimos como don lo compar-
tamos con alegría "se nos llama a mostrar misericordia porque la misericordia primero se nos mostró a nosotros". La expresión más clara del amor misericordioso, dice el Papa Francisco, es per-donando a quienes nos ofende. "¡Algunas veces parece difícil per-donar!" él lo reconoce. "Sin embargo, el perdón es el instrumento que está en nuestras manos frágiles para tener un corazón sereno". ¿Cuál es la condición necesaria de un amor ju-biloso? "Dejar de ir al rencor, la ira, el coraje, la violencia, la venganza." Que el Domingo de la Divina Misericordia este Año Jubilar de la Misericordia nos recuerde que Jesús hizo misericordioso nuestro ideal de vida y discernimiento para nuestra fe. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE La Iglesia católica es universal, extendida en diversas naciones y cultu-
ras. A través de los siglos estas culturas han enriquecido la Tradición de la Iglesia con muchas tradiciones y devociones que van más allá de su cultura de origen. La fiesta de la Divina Misericordia es un buen ejemplo. Viene de una devoción que nació en Polonia con la Hermana Faustina Kowalska (1905-1938) canonizada en el 2000.
La devoción a la Divina Misericordia se celebra el Segundo Domingo de Pascua y durante todo el año orando la Coronilla de la Divina Miseri-cordia. En latinoamérica se ha ido extendiendo esta devoción desde 1978 cuando fue aprobada por el Papa Paulo VI. En todas partes se puede encon-trar la imagen de la Divina Misericordia, Jesús de pie con rayos rojos y blanco-azules que brillan desde su corazón hacia el mundo. Lleva el lema: Jesús, confío en ti.
La finalidad de esta devoción es recordar al pecador que la miseri-cordia de Dios es infinita e inagotable. Es una misericordia que debemos imitar para que la paz pueda reinar en nuestros corazones y en nuestra tierra. --Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

“Si no lo veo, no lo creo”, se oye decir. Hay cosas que parecen tan fantásticas, que no se pueden creer; solo las creemos si nos las cuenta alguien de mucho fiar, alguien a quien le tenemos mucha con-fianza, porque sabemos que no miente. Tomás no cree ni siquiera a sus amigos, a la comunidad a la que pertenecía.; tiene que ver las lla-gas, es decir, la prueba de que es el mismo Jesús el que ha sufrido padecimientos horribles y que ahora está, según le cuentan, vivo.
Hoy día, para creer en la resurrección de Jesús, tenemos que re-currir a la fe y al testimonio de la comunidad eclesial que nos dice que es el misterio central de nuestra fe: que Cristo triunfa sobre la muerte; pero no es una fe que tengamos que aceptar sin ninguna prueba, por-que tenemos, ciertamente, pruebas de resurrección a nuestro alrede-dor: cada vez que vemos un triunfo de vida, es decir, del bien sobre el mal; cada vez que vemos que alguien, en nombre de Cristo, atiende al dolor de un necesitado, es decir, que ve sus llagas y reconoce en él el rostro de Cristo; cada vez que vemos en nosotros mismos que el bien y la generosidad vencen a nuestra tentación de egoísmo y comodidad; cada vez que alguien cercano nos ofrece un perdón espléndido que sabemos que no merecemos; cada vez que, superando nuestro impulso y nuestra ira, somos capaces de perdonar a quien nos hizo mal; cada vez que vemos, por todo el mundo, la labor de los misioneros afron-tando mil peligros y dificultades; cada vez que un joven de entre noso-tros decide entregar toda su vida al servicio de Dios.
En todo eso, está Jesús crucificado y resucitado. Nuestra fe tiene todas las pruebas de todas las llagas curadas y resucitadas. Como Tomás, cuando vemos tanto bien, podemos gritar conmocionados y agradecidos: “¡Señor mío, y Dios mío!”.
Para la reflexión ¿Qué bien he visto a mi alrededor en esta semana que es para mí, prueba de que Cristo vence sobre el mal y la muerte? ¿Qué bien he sido capaz de hacer que me prueba que la vida de Cristo también vive en mí por el Bautismo?
Reflexiones Sobre la Palabra...Un nuevo pueblo
Hechos 5:12-16 Todos los judíos creían que Dios hablaba a través de los profetas. Era fácil para ellos creer en los profetas del pasado después de que las auto-ridades religiosas los reconocían; pero era distinto tratar de reconocer a Jesús como el profeta que les había enviado el Señor y que ellos habían rechazado. El texto nos dice que creer en el Señor y unirse a una comu-nidad son cosas inseparables. Una persona no puede pertenecer a Jesús, sin pertenecer al nuevo pueblo que ha traído a la vida por el agua y el Espíritu. Apocalipsis 1:9-11A, 12-13 El libro del Apocalipsis (o Revelación) comienza y acaba como si fuera una carta; se considera como una profecía, aunque en realidad miraba al presente de la iglesia perseguida mucho más que a un futuro lejano. Los títulos que se dan a Jesús en esta introducción lo presentan como el glorioso triunfador de la muerte que asegura el triunfo de los cristianos perseguidos. Jesús es el Alfa y el Omega, la primera y última letras del alfabeto griego, porque lo abarca todo; nada se escapa a su acción y poder. Juan 20:19-31 En esta escena central de las apariciones, Jesús se revela a los discípu-los como el mismo que sufrió y murió, mostrándoles las llagas de su pasión. Cuando Jesús habla, se presenta como un ser divino que los bautiza en el Espíritu Santo haciéndolos una nueva creación y confián-doles su misión. Como Nataniel al comienzo del Evangelio, Tomás se niega a creer en el testimonio de sus amigos. Juan anuncia para el futu-ro que la presencia de Jesús se encontrará a través del testimonio de los creyentes y del evangelio escrito, que es la Palabra de Dios.
Nuestra cultura Escuchamos a veces a personas decir que no necesitan la Iglesia. Que ellos creen en Dios personalmente y que es una relación puramente individual; pero, como hispanos, sabemos que eso es difícilmente cier-to. Siempre nos entendemos como parte de una familia, una comunidad, y no como individuos aislados.
El primer lunes de cada mes, aquellas personas de edad avanzada, con una enferme-dad seria, salud en decadencia, o si van a te-ner una cirugía están invitados a asistir a la misa de las 7 p.m. en la Misión Sagrado Co-razón. Durante la misa podrán recibir el Sa-cramento de la Unción de los Enfermos. Este mes la Unción será el 4 de abril.
Olvídese de dejar algo, ¡simplemente dé! Para muchos católicos, la Cuaresma significa sacrificio y sacrificio significa dejar
de hacer algo; ¡pero, olvídese de dejar de hacer algo! En este Año de la Misericordia, la Iglesia nos invita a pensar sobre el sacrificio no como sufrimiento o una forma de casti-gar el cuerpo o la mente dejando de hacer algo, sino como una oportunidad para dar. Después de todo, San Francisco de Asís dijo que cuando damos es que recibimos.
Hay algo hermoso en el dar. Pensemos nada más en toda la gente que nos ha dado algo importante, detallista y bello. La vida cambia cuando esto nos pasa y los que nos dan se convierten en gente memorable; ellos se quedan en nuestras mentes y corazones para siempre. Más aun, su generosidad nos inspira a ser generosos; sus sacrificios nos hacen sacrificarnos. La alegría que nos dan nos anima a dar alegría a otros.
El problema es que a veces tomamos todo esto por merecido y esto hace nuestra cruz más pesada. Aquí hay unos ejemplos de los más grandes sacrificios que a veces damos por sentado: los sacrificios que nuestros padres hacen para que tengamos todo lo que necesitamos; la comida calientita que nos espera cuando regresamos del trabajo (que no cae del cielo, alguien la prepara con amor); el oído atento que nuestro mejor amigo nos da cuando queremos desahogarnos; la persona que decide poner sus necesidades a un lado para enfocarse en las nuestras y se muerde la lengua para no decir palabras que nos puedan lastimar. Como podemos ver, hay mucho sacrificio a nuestro alrededor.
Se nos ha dado mucho. Es nuestro turno de dar. Sería mejor (y más significativo), por ejemplo, hacer el gran sacrificio de prestar atención a toda la gente y las cosas bue-nas que nos rodean. Tal vez, en vez de dejar de comer dulces, podemos prestar atención a los gestos amorosos y sacrificios desapercibidos que nuestros padres, esposos, parien-tes y amigos hacen por nosotros. Tal vez, en vez de causar dolor al cuerpo, podemos sacar energía para agradecer a quienes nos han dado su amor y cuidado. Tal vez, en vez de fijarnos en nuestras limitaciones, fallas y pecados, nos podemos convertir en alguien memorable para otros e inspirarlos a ser generosos y mejores. Al hacer esto, redefinire-mos de qué el sacrificio realmente se trata: amor; y Dios sonreirá ya, que verá que su reino está llegando: ¡el reino en donde, más que dejar de hacer, simplemente damos!
