PANDEMIC PRAYER From Catholic Theological Union in Chicago

May we who are merely inconvenienced remember those whose lives are at stake. May we who have no risk factors, remember those most vulnerable. May we who have the luxury of working from home remember those who must choose between preserving their health or making their rent. May we who have the flexibility to care for our children when their schools close, remember those who have no options. May we who have to cancel our trips, remember those that have no place to go. May we who are losing our margin money in the tumult of the economic market remember those who have no margin at all. May we who settle in for a quarantine at home remember those who have no home. During this time when we cannot physically wrap our arms around each other, let us yet find ways to be the loving embrace of God to our neighbors. We ask this through Christ the Healer. Amen.

We look forward to the day when we can gather together again and celebrate the Eucharist. During this dark time, we ask that you look to the light of Christ the Savior. On April 12, Easter Sunday at 8 pm we encourage everyone step just outside their home

with a candle and say the Lord’s Prayer in celebration of the hope and salvation that God our Father provides.

The gift of special Indulgences is granted to the faithful suffering from COVID-19 disease, commonly known as Coronavirus, as well as to health care workers, family members and all those who in any capacity, including through prayer, care for them. “Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer” (Rom 12: 12). The pre-sent moment in which the whole of humanity, threatened by an invisible and insidious disease, which for some time now has become part of all our lives, is marked day after day by anguished fears, new uncertainties and above all widespread physical and moral suffering. Pope Francis, too, in these recent days, has shown his paternal closeness and renewed his invitation to pray incessantly for those who are sick with the Coronavirus.

THE PLENARY INDULGENCE Granted to the faithful suffering from Coronavirus, who are subject to quaran-tine by order of the health authority in hospitals or in their own homes if, with a spirit detached from any sin: • They unite spiritually through the media to the celebration of Holy Mass,

the recitation of the Holy Rosary, to the pious practice of the Way of the Cross or other forms of devotion.

• If at least they will recite the Creed, the Lord's Prayer and a pious invocation to the Blessed Virgin Mary, offering this trial in a spirit of faith in God and charity towards their brothers and sisters. • With the will to fulfil the usual conditions (sacramental confession, Eucha-

ristic communion and prayer according to the Holy Father's intentions), as soon as possible.

This Apostolic Penitentiary also willingly grants a Plenary Indulgence under the same conditions on the occasion of the current world epidemic, also to those faithful who: • Offer a visit to the Blessed Sacrament, or Eucharistic adoration, reading the

Holy Scriptures for at least half an hour, or the recitation of the Holy Rosary, or the pious exercise of the Way of the Cross, or the recitation of the Chap let of Divine Mercy to implore from Almighty God the end of the epidemic, relief for those who are afflicted and eternal salvation for those whom the Lord has called to Himself.

The Church prays for those who find themselves unable to receive the Sacra-ment of the Anointing of the Sick and of the Viaticum, entrusting each and every one to divine Mercy by virtue of the communion of saints and granting the faithful a Plenary Indulgence on the point of death, provided that they are duly disposed and have recited a few prayers during their lifetime (in this case the Church makes up for the three usual conditions required). For the attainment of this indulgence the use of the crucifix or the cross is recom-mended (cf. Enchiridion indulgentiarum, no.12). May the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God and of the Church, Health of the Sick and Help of Christians, our Advocate, help suffering humanity, saving us from the evil of this pandemic and obtaining for us every good necessary for our salvation and sanctification.

Our Food Pantry needs some extra help from our Parish family. Normally, Our Mother of Mercy Food Pantry supplements food donations from the Parish by purchasing from grocery stores using monetary donations. However, our options have become severely limited. As of right now, grocery stores cannot sell food to non-profit organizations because they are already struggling to refill their empty shelves for the general public. Even the amount of food provided by the USDA has been significantly reduced. This means our only source for replenishing our food supply is from Parishioner donations. There are many people in our community that rely on the Food Pantry to help them through difficult times. Due to the current health crisis, the need for support has increased exponentially. Many have lost their jobs and are unable to purchase the necessities they need to provide for their families. If you are able and have supplies to spare, please leave your food donations in the designated bin under the church porti-co on Monday through Friday, between 8:00 am - 12:00 pm. Please keep in mind that we can not accept any expired cans of food or food with packaging concerns. We understand that this request comes at a time of unease and uncertainty, but every little bit helps. Our Food Pantry ministry and the community are very grateful for all that you do. God bless you and keep you safe!

UPDATE: IMPORTANT PARISH OFFICE CHANGES Starting April 1, 2020 the majority of the Parish Staff will be working remotely. We will only have a few members of our staff in the office Tuesdays and Thursdays only. This is in the best interest of our staff as well as maintaining the recommended guidelines set forth by the CDC. We are in the process of setting up a call forwarding system so that Parishioners can still contact a staff member. However, if this is not available we will be checking our voicemails throughout the day and will be sure to follow up during the hours of 8:00 am—3:00 pm Monday – Thursday and 8:00 am - 12:00 pm on Fridays. We will be happy to address your needs which include scheduling Mass Intentions, Funerals, Anointings, and any questions you may have. We appreciate your understanding and we ask for your patience. We continue to pray for the continued health of our community and keep you all in our hearts.

CDC RECOMMENDATIONS Protecting Yourself from COVID-19 CLEAN YOUR HANDS OFTEN Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds especially after you have been in a public place, or after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneez-ing. If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. AVOID TOUCHING YOUR EYES, NOSE, AND MOUTH WITH UNWASHED HANDS Put distance between yourself and other people if COVID-19 is spreading in your community. This is espe-cially important for people who are at higher risk of getting very sick. STAY HOME IF YOU'RE SICK Stay home if you are sick, except to get medical care. WEAR A FACEMASK IF YOU ARE SICK

• If you are sick: You should wear a facemask when you are around other people and before you enter a healthcare provider’s office. If you are not able to wear a facemask then you should do your best to cover your coughs and sneezes, and people who are caring for you should wear a facemask if they enter your room.

• If you are NOT sick: You do not need to wear a

facemask unless you are caring for someone who is sick (and they are not able to wear a facemask). Facemasks may be in short supply and they should be saved for caregivers.

CLEAN & DISINFECT Clean AND disinfect frequently touched surfaces daily. This includes tables, doorknobs, light switches, counter-tops, handles, desks, phones, keyboards, toilets, fau-cets, and sinks. If surfaces are dirty, clean them: Use

STAY IN TOUCH

MAKE SOME PHONE CALLS Reach out to others especially those who have no one to chat with. Many elder care facilities and hospitals are no longer accepting visitors. Reach out to those who may need it most. MAINTAIN A CONNECTION WITH THE PEOPLE YOU LOVE Social distance does not mean cutting off social contact. If pos-sible, make video calls to friends and family using Skype or Facetime. Schedule these occasions with them and have these “visits” regularly. Even 10 minute check-ins can make a world of difference. SPEND TIME OUTSIDE Research suggests that being in nature can increase well-being and produce a sense of social connectedness, even if you’re doing it alone. Some suggestions you can try are taking a walk on a trail to pray and meditate, sit outside on your lanai and listen to music or read a book, or do some yoga or exercises outside! FIND AN ENGAGING ACTIVITY In this situation, it’s important to keep your mind occupied. A good way would be to engage in a challenging but fun activity — like a puzzle or game that friends can join remotely. Also, perhaps this is a great time to start a creative endeavor such as drawing, knitting or sewing.
