Souper Bowl Lunch &
Annual Meeting
Please mark your calendars for Starmount’s 2015 Annual Meeting. It will take
place with a simple soup lunch immediately following worship on February 7, in
honor of Super Bowl Sunday. It will be a wonderful way to celebrate the
wonderful ways God is working through the Holy Spirit at Starmount Presbyterian
Church! Registration for the lunch is underway – please check the Sunday bulle-
tin for more information. We simply ask that you consider making an offering for
Greensboro Urban Ministry - Starmount’s 2016 Souper Bowl of Caring ministry
partner of choice to help end hunger.
During lunch we will also conduct the Annual Meeting of the
congregation by hearing ministry highlights of 2015, receiving
the 2016 budget and voting on the proposed changes of call
for our pastoral staff.
More Highlights Inside:
Rev. Ray Mims begins his call as Starmount’s Transitional
Minister effective March 1, 2016.

Lillian Steele Ministry Update
2 Starmount Presbyterian Church
“I don’t want to bother you, since you have
so much on your plate…”
So begins many conversations I have had
with parishioners and other church
professionals in the last few months. Since
John Odom’s departure at the end of
October, I have had a lot on my plate. But
there are two truths that I know:
The session and staff of Starmount have a
lot on their plates as well. Together, we all
work hard to continue to lead this
congregation through its journeys of faith,
both individual and collective.
I was called to Starmount to be one of
your pastors. That has not changed. I will
never be “bothered” if you are wanting to
talk to me. Might I need to wrap up a
thought on something or ask to set a time
to meet with you? Perhaps. But I will have
time for you – “you” are not a bother.
I have been called to many things since
officially being called to Starmount as your
associate pastor in 2009: wife, friend, mother,
and daughter, just to name a few. While all of
those are of the utmost importance in my life,
there is a reason why I was also called as
pastor – to be there to care for you as well.
So, thanks for caring for me during this time of
transition. I look forward to learning more of
how I can continue to care for you as we
move forward in this transitional time
together.
Blessings,
Pastor Kathryn

Get to Know our New Starmount Members
Andrew and Megan are
both from North Carolina
(Hudson-near Hickory- and
Asheboro). They met at East
Carolina University. After
graduation Megan
obtained a Masters degree
in Child Development.
They moved to Asheboro
where they lived for about
five years before coming
to Colfax in February 2015.
Andrew is now employed at BNSF Logistics in Kernersville.
Megan works at UNCG where she is engaged in different
research projects to determine how cognitive and emotional
development correlates with academic achievement in
preschool to 1st grade students.
When not involved with their two young children, Eleanor
(Ellie) who is three years old and Henry who is seven months
old, Andrew enjoys watching sports- football and basketball,
and playing golf. Megan likes to spend time on photography
and crafts.
Marti is a native of Greensboro.
She attended public school here
and then went to Greensboro
College where she majored in
Special Education. After obtaining
her degree in 1974 she was
employed by Rockingham County
where for her first three years she
set up several Learning Disabilities
(LD) programs. The remainder of
her career was spent in Wentworth
where she taught in a self-
contained class for Emotionally Disturbed (ED) students. Martha
retired in 2005 and then lived in Lake Waccamaw, NC until 2011
when she came back to Greensboro.
Martha has a married daughter and a son and two married step-
daughters and six grandchildren ranging in age from two to
thirteen. Everyone lives relatively nearby except her son who is in
Colorado.
Reading, working out at the gym and, “junkin” are some of Marti’s
fun things to do. Also, when a friend needs assistance to get to
an appointment she is there.

Martha “Marti” Floyd
February 2016 5
George was “born and raised in Indianapolis”
and Frances is from Evanston, Illinois (a
suburb of Chicago). He is a graduate of
Indiana University where he majored in
business. Fran graduated from the
Harrington College of Design in Chicago.
Since college, George’s career has been
spent in sales, sales management and now
as a manufacturer’s representative in hard-
ware and lawn/garden in The Carolinas and
Virginia. He said that early on he had a job
that he particularly enjoyed—working for the
Fisher Body Div. of GM presenting their
Craftsman’s Guild program to junior and
senior high schools across the country. The
Guild’s program was about creativity and
how one idea begets another. The program
was also a competition for scholarships, as
high as $5000.00, by designing and building
scale model cars. (Who remembers this?)
George and Fran moved to Greensboro in
the early 70’s for a new job opportunity.
During her career Fran has worked some in
the area of her major but of course for much
of the time was busy taking care of their two
daughters. She now is employed at Gate
City Pharmacy.
George and Fran have two daughters,
Samantha Wallace and Kelly Owen, both of
whom live in Reidsville. They have three
grandchildren- ages three, almost two and
three months so it’s pretty lively when every-
one is together. In his scarce free time, George enjoys sports
and he is especially interested in open
wheel auto racing—IndyCar (not a big fan
of NASCAR, though)! He said he goes to the
Indy 500 every year and for more years than
he can remember. Fran enjoys gardening,
interior design and, now, the grandkids.

6 Starmount Presbyterian Church
Leadership
Introducing Reverend Ray Mims
The Session and
Transition Team
are pleased to
announce that
Reverend Ray
Mims has
accepted our
call and will join
our staff on
March 1, 2016,
serving as our
transitional
minister.
Ray requests that we use the title
“Transitional Minister” and not “interim”,
since “Transitional” implies a movement
forward, whereas “interim” can imply “just”
filling a gap.
Five facts about Ray:
Ray is a second-career minister. He
received his Master of Divinity degree at
Duke in 1999, and was ordained in 2000
as a teaching elder in the Presbyterian
Church (USA). Prior to being ordained,
Ray had a twenty-year career in non-
profit administration. This prior
experience in the business world has
given Ray a unique perspective in
helping churches successfully navigate
periods of change and transition.
Ray is an “intentional” interim. His calling
is to help churches during periods of
transition. As a result, we are the eighth
church Ray has served in this capacity in
the past 16 years. On his resume’, Ray
said the following: “My training and
experience in interim ministry has
equipped me to lead congregations
through a period of self-assessment,
conflict resolution, needs analysis and
the visioning of possibilities for the future.”
Ray and his wife, Dr. Sharon Sims
(Assistant Professor, UNC-G), are the
parents of four children. The youngest
just graduated from UNC-Wilmington.
They also have two grandchildren. They
live in Julian, NC (Guilford County), so the
Greensboro area is “home.”
Ray is active in Salem Presbytery. He
currently serves on the Committee on
Ministry and is extremely well-respected
in our area. After the vote in which the
Committee on Ministry approved Ray’s
call to Starmount, many members of the
committee expressed how great a “fit”
they felt that Ray would be to our
congregation during this period.
Ray is a “servant leader”. In his resume’,
he expressed the following: “My
leadership style is as a servant-leader,
focused on facilitating and assisting
individuals in discovering and utilizing
their own skills for ministry….In my ministry,
I seek to follow the advice of Dietrich
Bonheoffer: “when we come among a
new people, we must honor the Christ
who is already present among them.” I
lead by articulating a vision of what it
means to be children of God, working
together in building Christ’s kingdom of
love, justice and grace.”
The Transition Team has appreciated your
prayers, comments, introductions made to
others, advice and kind words during this
period of transition. We have felt the hand
of God leading us through this process.
One evidence is that all of the votes to call
Ray (Transition Team, Committee on
Ministry, Session) were unanimous. We
definitely believe that Ray is the right
person to lead us through this next phase
in the life of our church. Please continue
to pray for us as we begin work on the
mission study that will serve as the guide for
the future Pastoral Nominating Committee.
Grace and Peace,
The Transition Team

Lillian Steele Ministry Grant Update
The session and staff have been hard at
work discerning the next steps of how to
responsibly spend the generous bequest of
longtime Starmount member Lillian Steele.
Following the Ad Hoc committee's
recommendation, session voted to split the
approximate $1.45 million dollar request in
the following ways:
10% is a community tithe to a local
organization which targets combating
hunger in the area.
Eleven invitations were extended to vetted
organizations, seeking interest in applying
for this grant. Seven letters of intent were
received and are currently being
evaluated by the Ad Hoc Committee.
More information about next steps will be
available in the spring.
60% allows for the Lillian Steele bequest to
provide a generous $40,000 perpetual
pledge which will be added to the annual
operating budget.
More information will be available when
the 2016 budget is discussed at Starmount's
Annual Meeting on Sunday, February 7,
immediately following worship in the
Fellowship Hall.
30% has been allocated to be spent over
the next five years to provide funding for
new and existing ministries that further
Starmount's mission and vision.
Session approved the Finance Committee's
recommendation for distribution of funds
for 2016 grants. More information in the
upcoming months will be provided as
construction and other measures begin.
The eleven funded grants are:
Renovation of the Fellowship Hall kitchen.
Construction of a multipurpose building
and shelter out by the community
garden. This structure will provide shelter
to Starmount's bus, a place to store tools for
the community garden, and, because of
the electricity and water at the structure,
will be able to be used for future outdoor
events.
New flooring for the 400 level of the
church, including the library, choir room,
and staff offices.
Installation of motorized shades in the
narthex, which will decrease the amount of
shadows and visual disruptions in the
sanctuary, particularly during this time of
year.
Photography services for future publications
and Starmount's new website, which is
anticipated to launch by the end of this
month.
Additional funding of the Susan White
Helping Hands Fund, providing financial
aid to families in need of long-term
funding.
Installation of shade structures on the
Preschool playgrounds, providing respite
to the students and teachers during
recess.
Installation of equipment and software to
provide live streaming of sanctuary
events throughout the church.
Partial funding for an additional video
monitor in the sanctuary, allowing the
choir and worship leadership to also see
visual aids during sanctuary events.
Provide funding for Starmount to become
a Winter Emergency shelter for the 2016-
2017 season, provided the space and facility
would sufficiently meet the requirements
of a WE shelter.
To hire a full-time, one-year seminary
intern who would serve as staff, splitting
time equally at Starmount and UKirk
Greensboro.
Starmount has so much to be excited
about in 2016! More information will
continue to come out regarding these
thrilling projects in the Star Press, in worship,
and more. It is wonderful to see God at
work!

LENTEN PRACTICES AND
WEATHER ALERTS
Starmount Utilizes Technology for Lent and
Weather
Winter is upon us! As a reminder, Starmount utilizes WFMY’s church closing alerts, as well as posting information about worship, meetings, and event cancellations on our website and Facebook page. However, Starmount is able to provide one more way to be in touch with those who utilize their phones for texting alerts: Remind.
The “Remind” application is one that is used by many schools, teachers, and organizations to get the word out about important events, assignments, and notices. UKirk Greensboro has been using it for a couple of years now; Starmount Preschool has been using it since the beginning of the school year. Starmount Presbyterian Church will now offer it for a couple of things: weather-related alerts and daily Lenten reminders. If you’d like to “opt-in” to receive text messages about weather-related alerts regarding the church, please text @spcweather to 81010. You will receive information should the church be closed because of weather on a day or evening when meetings, classes, rehearsals, or worship is scheduled. As we begin to journey through Lent, you are encouraged to sign up for a daily Lenten phrase or word to reflect on. By texting @gh373 to 81010, you will opt-in to join UKirk Greensboro’s Daily Lenten texts. In either case, you will ONLY receive text messages for whichever alerts you would like to receive. Therefore, if you would like to subscribe to both, then you have to text each list title (complete with the @) to the appropriate numbers. We look forward to getting creative with this service in the future, including using it for specific groups and other contemplative times of the year, like the Lenten season.

Thank You from Triad Health Project
Triad Health Project extends sincere thanks to Starmount for generously providing Christmas gifts for children of their clients this past year. For every family participating in the Angel Tree program, the gifts purchased and shared with them helps bring the true spirit of Christmas alive. Most of the adults would otherwise be unable to provide a gift for their children. Thank you for choosing the path of selflessness to brighten the holiday for someone you have never had the opportunity to meet. You have brought hope and encouragement through your kindness.
May your 2016 be filled with happiness and good health!
YWCA Shelter for Homeless Families
New Starmount Church Initiative
Starmount Church has a long history of helping homeless families in our community. Beginning on February 1, 2016 our church will start serving dinner once a month to approximately thirty men, women and children at the YWCA Family Shelter located at 1807 E. Wendover Ave. We need individuals and groups to provide and serve these meals every month on the first Monday at 6:30 p.m.
Meals can be homemade or store bought. Volunteers are also needed at the YWCA from 5:00-7:00 p.m. to greet families and hand out supplies; and from 6:30-8:30 p.m. to help with homework and play games with the children. Training and orientation are provided and encouraged by the YWCA.
If you would like to help with this project you can sign up at the YWCA’s website at http://www.ywca.org/site/c.6nICIOOoG5IOE/b.8720779/k.860B/Family_Shelter.htm
There is also a sign-up sheet in the lobby at the church or you can email or call Cilie Sutton: [email protected]; 336-299-1372.

single member of society: the "Receiver." While receiving the memories, Jonas learns a different and better way to live and realizes what he and the Community have been missing. He decides that something must be done to change the current conditions and enlighten his community.” Review from Amazon.com Call no. F Low 2013
