“Did not our hearts burn within us while He talked to us on the road, while He opened to us the scriptures?” (Luke 24:32)
How often do we take the time to discern what Jesus wants from us? Are our prayers always petitions, asking Jesus to do things for us? If so, that’s a one-sided relationship. Living our faith means developing a personal relationship with Jesus. Just like any friendship, there is give and take, each side listening to each other and helping each other out. Take time in silence to listen to what Jesus is asking of you.
Weekly Prayer of the Faithful Petitions
That our daily actions reflect our goal of good discipleship.

Prayer for those affected by the Coronavirus
God of Mercy, be with the tens of thousands of people who have contracted the

Bring peace to those living with uncertainty after perhaps being exposed to the virus.
Give patience to those who are quarantined and unable to move freely in

WHAT'S HAPPENED . . . AND HASN'T HAPPENED
Our lives have been different the last few weeks, haven't they? And our parish has been different the last few
weeks, too. (Doesn't it seem longer than five weeks since we stopped having our parish Masses?) I'm looking at the parish
calendar and want to share with you a few things of what has happened . . . and hasn't.
The first thing that comes to mind as I begin thinking about what has happened is undoubtedly the most important:
we've had several parishioners pass away since mid-March. (None of them from the coronavirus.) Carole Bjugstad, who I
had as parishioner at St. Mary's in Sheldon when I was pastor there in the early 90's, had moved to Fargo and become a
member of my parish again; she was one of our choir members; her funeral Mass and burial will be later this summer when
we are able to have it as the family wishes.
Eve Fischer, a long-time member, who had been living the last few years at Pioneer House, died in March. We just
had a funeral Mass for her this past week - with less than 10! – in the Magnificat Chapel. She will be buried later.
Agnes Evenson passed away on March 20. There was a prayer service at Boulger Funeral Home – with less than
10! – on April 3. We will have a funeral Mass and burial for her later.
Leona Hammes died on March 31. She was a long-time parishioner and had been living at Bethany on 42nd for
many years now. Her funeral will be later.
Kate Thompson passed away – I have not heard anything from the family at this time about funeral plans.
Finally, William Orth died on April 12. He was to have moved back to New York (state) with his wife Zara to be
with their daughter. He passed away rather unexpectedly, and Zara has now left Fargo and is in New York with her
daughter. William's funeral will be out there later.
And lots of things haven't happened. Most of them you already know: our weekend Masses and the entirety of
Holy Week and the Sacred Triduum were celebrated in a quite unusual way this year in all the parishes. We also canceled
the rest of the Religious Education year, asking the parents to "finish it up" as best they could with their children. Our
parish's Lenten Reconciliation Service and Live Stations of the Cross were canceled during Lent. The RCIA classes were
canceled and our catechumens and candidates were not received into the Church on the Easter Vigil as they normally would
have been; we will do something with all of them in the future. I've only had one baptism during this time . . . Our
Confirmation/First Eucharist retreat was to have been this weekend, and that did not happen. And we just found out that
our May 8 date for Confirmation/First Eucharist has been canceled. Bishop Folda has not rescheduled that ceremony at this
time; when he does for our parish, we will let those families know - and you, too! We have some weddings coming up
beginning in May; a few have been rescheduled, but most are still going forward with their original dates, hoping . . .
I suppose all of you have "stories" to tell about what's happening/what's not happening in your lives during this
time. Someday, hopefully, we will be able to look back on this time as a time when much sacrifice, but also many graces,
were experienced. One thing never changes – as always – our God's presence and love in our lives. We are still living each
day as we always have: before Him. May our faith grow during this time to see that the most important things in life really
have not changed, nor should they: our faith, our Father's love for us, our family and friends, and our love and service to
our neighbor and those in need. No matter what may afflict our bodies, none of that can touch our souls.
Keep your prayers up – pray for others in our parish and for their needs – pray for the physical, spiritual, and
financial health of our parish and the members of our parish family. May your Easter season continue to be blessed!

First Saturday Devotions
Our Blessed Mother has asked us to make reparation for sins to her Immaculate Heart. She told the little children at Fatima that Jesus wants her to be known and loved and that we should have a special devotion to her Immaculate Heart. Our Blessed Mother also told the little Fatima children, “I promise to help at the hour of death, with the graces needed for salvation, whoever on the First Saturday of five consecutive months shall: go to confession, receive Holy Communion, recite five decades of the Rosary, and keep me company while meditating on the mysteries of the Rosary.” Although we are unable to receive communion at this time. We can continue our practice of keeping the Blessed mother company. Here are some points to ponder, a brief meditation and a prayer to help you in your devotional practice.
This month’s focus is on the Third Glorious Mystery, The Descent of the Holy Spirit " (Acts 2:1-4).
"When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly a sound came from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them tongues as of fire, distributed and resting on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance."
Meditation
Our God is a burning fire, inviting, inflaming, bestowing the charismatic countenance of the Spirit upon each of the Church’s members. The Spirit is the force of “ecclesia,” calling people out of themselves through baptism, confirmation, and the Eucharist to live united in faith, hope, and love. The Spirit frees us for self-giving. We share ourselves in the manner of the Trinity, giving and receiving in such manner that no one is diminished or dominated. We cling, but do not crush. We console, encourage, and challenge one another to deeper conversion, we do not overwhelm, alienate, or subjugate. The Spirit bestows a new identity upon us: we are adopted sons and daughters in Christ. The Spirit deals death to the parts of the soul that would suffocate itself. The Sprit inspires us to step beyond pretense and unswervingly to dedicate ourselves to God in the face of the distractions and dead ends the world poses to us. The Spirit does not diminish our uniqueness but raises individual responsibility in relief.
The Holy Spirit turned the apostles into world conquerors. He will transform us, too, if we will say “yes” and embrace His calling in our lives.
Pentecost reveals the face of the Church as a family gathered together with Mary, enlivened by the powerful outpouring of the Spirit and ready for the mission of evangelization.
“The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.” (Gal 5:22-23) Are these fruits found in our daily lives? Would others describe us as a person with these qualities? If not, why not?
Concluding prayer
Jesus, you fulfilled the promise that you had made to the apostles when the Holy Spirit came upon them in the form of tongues of fire. Help us to live the sevenfold gifts of the Holy Spirit so that, in every thought, desire, word, and action, our lives may witness to the power of God active in the world.
