WEEK OF PRAYER FOR HEALING & REPARATION
This week we have the second of three "Week(s) of Prayer for Healing and Reparation" for this year. This is something
our parish began a few years ago as a simple but powerful response to all the sin and scandal that has erupted in the life of the
Church through the latest exposure of crimes of sexual abuse and its cover up by the clergy (priests and bishops) in the Church. I
intend to continue these "weeks of prayer" three times each year for years to come.
The primary effort for this week of prayer will be taking place during our parish's time of Eucharistic
Adoration, which begins this Monday at 7:30 a.m. and runs continuously through Friday at 7:00 a.m. During this
week I am asking that all of our adorers offer in a particular way their time of prayer for that healing and reparation
that is so needed right now in our Church's life. Prayer for healing – for the healing of the victims of the abuse, and
prayer for the healing of the torn-open Body of Christ, the Church. Prayer for reparation – for reparation before
Our Lord Jesus Christ for the sins committed in the Church against the "least ones" of His, the children, and anyone
abused by the clergy of the Church.
I invite ALL to come and spend some time before Our Lord during this week – this week is not just for the usual
adorers. Make some time and come – 15 minutes, a half-hour, or perhaps even a full Holy Hour – as your part in this time of
prayer for healing and reparation for the entire Body of Christ, the Church. (With our Adoration worship area being the
Magnificat Chapel to allow for more spacing, there is plenty of room for more adorers to stop by at any of the hours.)
I ask that each Holy Hour during this week of Adoration begin with those present praying the Chaplet of Divine
Mercy. There will be prayer cards available in the chapel if needed. However, you will learn the prayers for the Chaplet quickly –
it is a simple but powerful prayer to Our Father through His Son for mercy in our Church and in our world. Whether there is only
one person at that Hour, or two or three or more, I ask that each Hour begin with the public offering of the Chaplet.
The other opportunity this week will come on Friday evening at 6:00 p.m. when we close out this special week of prayer
with a Mass of Reparation. I also encourage you all, if you can, to fast on this Friday and offer that as a penance of
reparation. And you'll notice I deliberately put the time for this Mass of Reparation in the middle of the dinner hour; if you wish
to fast that day, you may as well come to the Mass also – and vice versa – as you won't be eating at that time anyway!
I hope you will take part in this week of prayer for healing and reparation in this effort of what "we can do." We will not
see the fruits of our offerings when we do these things, but the living God will see our efforts, and that's all that matters.

This Friday, January 22, is also the 48th observance of the Roe vs. Wade Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion in our country and has led to over 60 million children slaughtered "legally" in our land. What I find so ironic – and tragic – is that so many in this country are still befuddled by what "ails" America at this time. Legalized abortion is a scourge that tears the moral fiber of our nation apart. If we as a nation are willing to do this, what else should we be surprised by that is coming to pass?
The national observances of this day will be changed a bit, due to Covid concerns. The following is from the U.S. Catholic Conference of Bishops and relates some of what will be happening:
Catholics across the country are encouraged to observe a nationwide prayer vigil from Thursday, January 28 to Friday, January 29, 2021 marking the 48th anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court’s 1973 Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton decisions legalizing abortion through nine months of pregnancy. Since those decisions, over 60 million abortions have been performed legally in the United States.
The vigil will begin with a live broadcast at 7:00 PM on Thursday, January 28 from the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington D.C. with a rosary, followed by Mass opening the National Prayer Vigil for Life. The principal celebrant and homilist for the opening Mass will be Archbishop Joseph F. Naumann of Kansas City in Kansas, who is chairman of the Committee on Pro-Life Activities for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). After the Mass and throughout the night, holy hours led by bishops from various dioceses around the country will be broadcast on the USCCB’s website. The

vigil concludes at 7:00 AM on Friday, January 29 with Mass celebrated by Archbishop William E. Lori of Baltimore.
“Now, more than ever, our nation is in need of prayer for the protection of the unborn and the dignity of all human life,” said Archbishop Naumann. “I am happy to be joined by bishops in dioceses across the country who are hosting pro-life prayer events, including during the overnight hours of Eucharistic adoration. I invite all Catholics to spend time with Our Lord and join in this nationwide vigil for life.”
The schedule of the 2021 National Prayer Vigil for Life is listed below.
Thursday, January 28:
7:00 PM National Rosary for Life
7:30 PM Opening Mass with Archbishop Naumann
8:45 PM Holy Hour for Life
10:00 PM Live-stream of holy hours throughout the night
Friday, January 29:
7:00 AM Closing Mass with Archbishop Lori
The live television broadcasts on January 28 from 7:00-10:00 PM and on January 29 from 7:00-8:00 AM will be provided by the Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN) and will also be available via live-stream on the Basilica’s website. Live-streaming information for the overnight bishop-led holy hours from various dioceses will be provided on the USCCB’s website.
Our country is so sorely wounded these days – and this has been preceded by almost a half-century of us killing ourselves. We need a "culture of life" in this nation as Pope St. John Paul II always cried out for. Let us never cease praying for this.
Fr. Duchschere
