Stewardship “I will be their God and they shall be my people.” - Jerimiah 31:33

What does it mean to be God’s people? It means we recognize that everything we have and everything we are belongs to God. We aren’t “owners” of anything, we are merely “stewards” of the gifts God has given us. It means we are willing to use our gifts and our lives to care for our neighbors and the world, just as God cares for us.

March 25th is Palm Sunday, the beginning of Holy Week. Make time to join us in prayer and sacrament as we prepare for the Resurrection of our Lord.

From Our Pastor

Page 3 March 18, 2018

“The enemy is fear. We think it is hate; but, it is fear.” Gandhi

I am, by nature, an introvert. I can remember worrying before the first time I preached: Would I be good enough? Would I talk too quickly? Would I preach on the wrong Gospel? “Lord, let your words come from my mouth; let your

Spirit reveal your great love and mercy.” Since then, in one form or another, this has been my prayer before every Mass.

We can all relate to being nervous and hesitant. Fear can stop us from reaching out to a lonely classmate (What will others think of me?); it can prevent us from serving those less fortunate than us (I would but the homeless scare me a little); it can withhold understanding (They don’t look/sound/act like me). How can we break these bonds?

We can’t. Not by ourselves.

We know that Christ knew fear. He knew that he would literally have to die to win our eternal life. In today’s Gospel, he tells his disciples and some visiting Greeks, “I am troubled now. Yet what should I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’?” (John 12:27)

Then the crowd hears God’s reassuring voice encouraging Jesus, and others, to trust Him.

It is this same voice which calls us to trust today; to go beyond our comfort zone; to be strong in the face of illness, loss or sadness. God calls us, most importantly, to love and to allow others to love us. “There is no fear in love. …perfect love drives out fear.” (1 John 4:18)

Next week we begin the ultimate journey of love. Let us love equally at the foot of the Cross as we do along the streets of Jerusalem.

~Fr. Posey

Weekly Reflection Readings: Jeremiah 31:31-34; Psalm 51; Hebrews 5:7-9; John 12:20-33 http://usccb.org/bible/readings/ 031818-year-b.cfm

Reflection Question: What death to yourself is God calling you to, and what fear holds you back?

Mary, Undoer of Knots

Pray for us Mother of fair love, I look to you.

Take into your hands the ribbon of my life and see the snare of knots that keeps me bound to sin, anxiety, and hopelessness.

I beg you, Mother, by your powerful intercession and long fingers of love and grace, undo the knots in my heart and in my life. Free me to love as Christ loves.

Ponder the Theme: Are the knots in your life born of fear or of faith?

THE HOLY TRIDUUM We have come to the threshold of The Holy Triduum—The Three Days. These are the days when God moves most profoundly among us, the days when we enter most deeply into God’s action in our lives. In word and symbol and gesture, we celebrate the mysteries of life, death and resurrection in company with the Risen Christ who shows us the way.

HOLY THURSDAY Mass of the Lord’s Supper

7:30 pm The Gospel leaves no room for doubt—the most humble service given in love surrounds the gift of Christ’s Body and Blood. Feet are washed—a demanding gesture, at once a little messy and awkward, like many of love’s demands. Wine and bread are consecrated—enough bread for tomorrow when even sacraments are silent. Procession with the Eucharist from the church building to the altar of repose in Heller Hall, accompanied by the Hispanic community. Adoration through the last hours of the day, until midnight, when Friday’s fast begins.

GOOD FRIDAY Stations of the Cross 3:00 pm English

Living Stations of the Cross 5:00 pm Spanish

Celebration of the Lord’s Passion 7:30 pm – Church

We come to stand with the women and the beloved disciple to listen to the Passion according to St. John. We pray with every man and woman and child in whom Christ is still suffering. We eat the Bread of Remembrance. A single cross is lifted high for our veneration together, then placed at the altar steps. Individual veneration of the cross takes place when the celebration of the Lord’s Passion is over. We leave an empty church in silence.

EASTER VIGIL 8:30 pm – Church

“Mother of all vigils.” This is St. Augustine’s name for tonight, a name that conveys how the church cherishes this night that is different from any other. A vigil is a night watch: people who would normally be home resting are awake, gathered in expectation, waiting for news. We wait in a great company, as Christians around the world keep watch. Nothing is ordinary about this evening we spend together. The Vigil is long and full.

It begins outside with Fire, kindled in the presence of our elect, our candidates and those who accompany them. The Paschal Candle is ignited from that fire and carried into the darkened church where all our candles are lit from that flame.

We hear the EXSULTET – THE EASTER PROCLAMATION. This is the night when Christ broke the prison-bars of death

and rose victorious from the grave.

In the light of the Easter candle, we listen to God’s Word, the story of our salvation. Women and men from our assembly come, one after another, to proclaim the Word. Readings announce how God saves His people throughout history, pursuing us with unrelenting affection. These stories take time to tell and to savor, and call us to respond in psalm and in prayer. The Gloria sounds again after Lenten silence, and the Alleluia. Lights are thrown on. Bells ring.

Led to faith by God's Word and by God's people, our elect come to be baptized. Water is blessed and poured over Sitthidol Doysrieiam, Huy Hoang Le, Robin Moser, Matthew Nellor and Amy White. They are wrapped in the white garment of Christ's life and are given the new light of Christ.

Called to remember and renew our own baptism, we stand to embrace the saving waters. We acclaim our candidates Laine Bowen-Watson, Jeremy Lowry and Lyndon Diaz as they reaffirm their baptism and, with the newly baptized, are sealed and confirmed with the oil of chrism.

Together we taste and savor the Bread of Life—Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of the Risen Lord.

The Mother of all Vigils enfolds the Christian people, nourishes our Christianity, sends us out to embody Christ to the world.

EASTER SUNDAY Masses at 7:30am, 9:00am, 10:30am, 12:00pm, 7:00 pm

Spanish Mass at 2:30 pm

The Great Sunday, the Feast of Fifty Days begins! The fifty days from Easter to Pentecost are celebrated as one feast day, The Great Sunday. The Easter candle is lit and God’s people may feel the waters of life throughout this season. New Catholics join their brothers and sisters at the Table of the Lord. A time of grace for our whole parish.

PENTECOST May 20 — The Birthday of the Church! The celebration of all God’s people!

Easter Basket Blessing March 31 9:00am In the Church Bring your Easter Baskets to church on Holy Saturday at 9:00am for a blessing of the “first foods” of Easter. This blessing—a long tradition of Christians in Poland and the Slavic countries to thank God for the gifts of creation and grace—marks the end of the Lenten fast when eggs were among the foods that could not be eaten. The blessed foods, including eggs and perhaps Easter bread, cheese, bacon, ham, butter, salt, and even a few jellybeans, are then taken home to be shared on Easter morning.
