Elaine Gardner, Editor 141 Cleveland Drive Kenmore, N.Y. 14223-1027 MARCH 2014 Vol. XXXIII No. II NEXT EVENT: Sunday, March 23 –– 4:00 PM at St. Joseph Cathedral, 50 Franklin Street, Buffalo Please note that there has been a change for our March event. In place of the originally planned Student Competition on March 9, it will be Houghton Organist’s Day at the Cathedral. Students of Dr. Judy Congdon, Professor of Organ and Harpsichord and College Organist at Houghton College, will play the 1876 Hook & Hastings organ at St. Joseph Cathedral, Buffalo in a free recital. The event venue remains the same, but the date has been changed to Sunday, March 23 at 4:00 PM. Dr. Congdon herself will demonstrate the large tonal palate of the organ, which was constructed as the principal instrument for America's Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia, purchased by the Catholic Diocese of Buffalo and shipped to and installed in the Cathedral in 1877. In the year 2000 the organ underwent a million dollar restoration by the Andover Organ Company, with several previously unplayable ranks restored to their former glory, and a number of complimentary ranks added. Eight of Dr. Congdon’s students will perform, and works presented will include Louis Vierne's Carillon de Westminster, Olivier Messiaen's L'Ascension (mvts. 1-3) and J.S. Bach's Prelude and Fugue in C minor (BWV 546) as well as Gigout’s Toccata, Reger’s Benedictus, and possibly the Bach Toccata & Fugue in D minor. An active performer, Dr. Congdon has played organ recitals in many parts of the United States, and during 1996 was featured as soloist in Poulenc’s Organ Concerto with the Buffalo Philharmonic orchestra. In addition to her duties at Houghton College, she served for eight years as Organist/Choirmaster at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Olean, NY. She has also served as Dean and Board Member of the Allegany Chapter AGO and member of the Music Commission for the Episcopal Diocese of Western New York. She served as presenter, recitalist, and service organist at the January 2006 Calvin Symposium on Worship. In recent years Dr. Congdon has presented workshops by invitation for several AGO chapters on topics of organ pedagogy and organ repertoire, and has served as adjudicator in numerous organ-playing competitions, both local and national. She is featured on two CD releases recorded on Houghton’s Wesley Chapel Holtkamp organ: With Heart and Hands and Voices: Hymns and Chorales for Organ (2005), and Love So Amazing: Organ Hymns for the Church Year. A third CD, Jesus Priceless Treasure, is a recording of her all-Bach recital presented during the inaugural series for the James Louder organ (Opus VIII, 2008) at Houghton Wesleyan Church. All CDs are available through the Houghton Campus Store or from www.apadrecordings.com. The Cathedral is located in downtown Buffalo at 50 Franklin Street, near the corner of Church and Franklin. There is free parking on Sundays in the lot just behind the adjacent police station (enter from Church Street), as well as ample on-street parking nearby. The Executive Committee of the Buffalo Chapter AGO has begun the initial stages of planning to create a proposal to host the 2019 AGO Northeast Regional Convention in the Buffalo/Niagara region. The summer of 2019 would coincide with the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Buffalo Chapter. There would be no better way to celebrate 100 years of the AGO in Buffalo than to have a week of concerts, workshops and events featuring our wonderful instruments and highlighting everything our area has to offer. The planning for this proposal is only in the very beginning stages and is being coordinated by our Sub-Dean, John Novak. If you have ideas, questions or comments please contact John. A formal vote of chapter members will be taken before any proposal is submitted to AGO Headquarters.

FROM THE DEAN . . . The spring thaw is just around the corner; but while we wait,

there are things happening for the Buffalo Chapter AGO. The participation and collaboration with the Church Musicians Guild for the Annual Post-Epiphany Dinner met with great success! All guests enjoyed a deliciously prepared meal at Rizzo’s along with socializing throughout the evening. Weather was cold, but festive!

Please mark your calendar for March 23, St. Joseph Cathedral at 4:00 PM. In place of the student competition that was scheduled for March 9, we are presenting a Houghton Organists Day at the Cathedral, hosted by Tim Socha. This will be a wonderful opportunity to meet and hear some new young, talented performers.

Also be aware that on April 4 and 5 Andrew Kotylo, formerly of St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral will perform (April 4) and conduct a master class (April 5) at First Presbyterian Church, Symphony Circle. This event is hosted by David Bond. For more information see the “Coming Event” article on this page.

Another point to think about is the 100th anniversary of our very own Buffalo Chapter in 2019!! Yes, we are busy! David Carmer, our historian, is beginning to gather information and materials for this upcoming celebration. He will be inviting others to join him in this project. Let’s look to the future and “Participate & Succeed” together. See you soon! Your Dean, Christina Shrewsbury CHAPTER ANNIVERSARY –– 2019

1919. . . the Treaty of Versailles officially ended the First World War, while planting the seeds for the Second. Baseball was rocked by the “Chicago Black Sox” scandal, and moviegoers were shocked at actress Theda Bara’s minimal costume in “Cleopatra.” Former baseball star Billy Sunday was the leading evangelist of the day, and the Buffalo Chapter of the American Guild of Organists was born.

Our centennial may be a few years away; but time flies, and some of us have begun to discuss how best to commemorate this milestone. Nothing is set in stone as of yet, but we will listen to suggestions. After all, it’s your chapter.

If you have suggestions, please send them to John Novak at [email protected], call him at 585-535-0135, or call David Carmer at 735-7362. – David Carmer, Historian NEW PROCESS FOR MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL

The AGO is implementing a new process for renewing your membership in the Guild starting this year. New memberships and renewals will now be handled through the national office instead of through local chapters. You should have already received, or will shortly be receiving an email from the national headquarters outlining all the changes and inviting you to go online to update your membership information including your address and email. They will then notify you when they are ready to start taking renewals on the AGO website. This process, called Online National Collection And Remittal of Dues (ONCARD), will be much more convenient for many of our members and will allow you to renew your membership online and pay with a credit card. Our chapter has already submitted all of the necessary information to the national website, and so when you renew online you will see several specific fields just for members of the Buffalo Chapter where you will be able to become a patron, contribute to the Haskin Fund and submit all your information to be on our substitute list. There will also be a process for members without internet access to still renew your membership by mail.

Houghton’s Organ Students to Perform for the American Guild of Organists . . .

From Houghton News & Media . . . A group of Houghton College organ students, along with Professor of Organ and Harpsichord, Judy Congdon, have been invited to perform a recital for the American Guild of Organists in Buffalo on Sunday, March 23 at 4:00 p.m at St. Joseph Cathedral, 50 Franklin Street, Buffalo. The event is free and open to the public. In past years the AGO has held organ competitions; this year, however, the AGO is inviting Houghton’s organ studio to come and present a recital. Eight of the ten students currently taking organ lessons with professor Congdon will perform in the recital. Each student “looks forward to this wonderful opportunity to perform on a powerful instrument in a resonant space,” states Congdon. “Our hope is that this recital will enlarge the circle of friends of Houghton in the Buffalo area and confirm the reputation of the Greatbatch School of Musicians as an artistic leader in the Western New York area.” states Congdon. – Christy Windhausen, Author 3
