We just started Lent 4 days ago, and Spring Break is already here! The good news for many students and families is that they get a reprieve from school and all the surrounding activities. Some like to travel to the beach or the mountains, some prefer to stay home and “chill.” The bad news is that Spring Break breaks the season of Lent, and many Lenten resolutions fall apart and seem to never return.
Remember what we just heard on Ash Wednesday when Jesus talked about prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Is it still possible to pray during Spring Break? Yes, but quiet times may be far and few between; but grab a few moments of silence when you can and talk to the Lord early in the morning or late at night before bed. Better yet, if you are on a family vacation, gather for a little family prayer time.
Among all the excesses of Spring Break, is it still possible to fast? Yes, you could still give up a little something or make a sacrifice for somebody. But true fasting is fasting from sin—that’s still possible.
Is it still possible to give alms? Almsgiving is generosity we give to those in need. It may be a gift of money. It may be a smile, a compliment, a good word, an act of kindness, maybe to a waitress at a restaurant, a generous tip to a valet who parks our car, a friendly conversation with a clerk who waits on us. Think generosity and kindness during Spring Break, and they will come out in surprising ways.
Think Lent, and it will happen.
Next weekend, March 11-12, we begin Daylight Savings Time. Don’t forget to “spring forward”: on Saturday night set your clocks forward 1 hour. That means that we lose an hour of sleep. Oh, I know, I hate it, too. But, please do it, or you will arrive for Sunday Mass at the wrong time!
Hace 4 días iniciamos la Cuaresma, y las vacaciones de primavera ¡ya casi están aquí! La buena noticia para muchos estudiantes y familias es que consiguen un respiro de la escuela y de todas las actividades diarias. A algunas personas les gusta viajar a la playa o a la montaña, otros prefieren quedarse en casa y relajarse. La mala noticia es que las vacaciones de primavera cortan el tiempo de Cuaresma y muchos propósitos cuaresmales se desmoronan o abandonan y parece que no se vuelven a retomar.
Recordemos lo que hemos escuchado el miércoles de ceniza cuando Jesús habló de la oración, el ayuno y la limosna. ¿Es todavía posible orar durante las vacaciones de primavera? Sí, pero los momentos de tranquilidad y silencio a veces pueden ser muy pocos y lejanos entre sí; pero pueden tomar unos momentos de silencio para hablar con el Señor temprano en la mañana, en la tarde o en la noche antes de acostarse. Mejor aún, si usted está en unas vacaciones familiares pueden reunir a la familia para tener un pequeño tiempo para la oración familiar.
Entre todos los excesos de las vacaciones de primavera, ¿es todavía posible ayunar? Sí, aún se puede renunciar a un poco de algo o hacer un sacrificio por alguien. Pero el verdadero ayuno es el ayuno del pecado--que todavía es posible.
¿Es todavía posible dar limosna? La limosna es la generosidad que le damos a los necesitados. Puede ser económica, una sonrisa, un elogio, una buena palabra, un acto bondadoso a una mesera en un restaurante, tal vez darle una generosa propina al que les ayude a estacionar el coche, una conversación amistosa con una recepcionista quien nos recibe. Piense en generosidad y amabilidad durante las vacaciones de primavera, y sorprendentemente las verá ocurrir.
Piense en Cuaresma, y ¡vivirá la Cuaresma! El próximo fin de semana, en la noche del día 11 al 12 de marzo, comenzamos el Horario de Verano. No se olviden de "adelantar el tiempo": el sábado por la noche adelanten el reloj una hora. Eso significa que perdemos una hora de sueño. ¡Si, lo sé, también odio perder este tiempo! Pero, por favor, hágalo o usted llegará tarde a la Misa Dominical.

Cena de Discernimiento Vocacional 9 de marzo a las 6:00 pm La Oficina de Vocaciones está organizando una cena de discernimiento para los jóvenes varones que van en secundaria (High school). La cena será la tarde de jueves 9 de marzo del 2017 en la Iglesia Católica de San José en Richardson. El evento comenzará con la Misa a las 6:00 pm. continúa con la Comunión, la cena, las presentaciones y discusión con respecto a una Vocación al Sacerdocio Diocesano con los sacerdotes y seminaristas de nuestra Diócesis. Me gustaría aclarar que no es un pecado el no asistir a Misa si usted está enfermo - el Señor lo entiende. Si usted tiene una enfermedad contagiosa, por favor no venga a Misa. ¡Permítame ser atrevido y decir que es un “pecado” venir a Misa con una enfermedad contagiosa y contagiar a otra persona! El fin de semana del 18 y 19 de febrero, alguna o algunas personas contagiaron a los sacerdotes. Yo me enfermé el miércoles por la noche del 22 de febrero, el Padre Artemio el viernes, y el Padre Paul el sábado. Fue difícil celebrar las Misas del sábado y domingo del fin de semana del 25 y 26 de febrero. El sábado casi no se casaban tres parejas ya que los sacerdotes estábamos enfermos. Por lo tanto, especialmente durante esta temporada de gripe e influenza, por favor, quédese en casa si usted está enfermo de algo contagioso. Fr. Larry Pichard

Flu Season is Here!I just want to clarify that it is not a sin to miss Mass if you are sick—the Lord understands. If you are sick with an infectious disease, please do not come to Mass. Let me be bold and say that it’s a sin to come to Mass with an infectious disease and infect somebody or somebodies else!
On the weekend of February 18-19, somebody or somebodies infected us priests. I got sick Wednesday night the 22nd, Fr. Artemio Friday, and Fr. Paul Saturday. We barely got through Masses on Sunday. Three couples on Saturday almost didn’t get married since we priests were sick. So, especially during this flu and cold season, please stay home if you are infectious.

St Francis of Assisi is offering a study, biblically based and from the Catholic perspective entitled “Entertaining Angels.” The study includes a guide containing written commentaries for 10 lessons and study questions for contemplation. Columbian Squires InvestitureMarch 16The Columbian Squires will be hosting an Investiture for our Circle 5450 on March 16th and would like to invite young men from our Parish ages 10-18 if they are interested in becoming part of our group. The Squires involve young men in programs that benefit the Church, the community, as well as in recreational and social activities. At our Parish, we host the monthly Pancake Breakfast, Breakfast with St. Nick, participate in Taste of St. Francis, help out with the Knights of Columbus with the Fish Fry, host the Vatican tent at the Annual Mexican Dinner and Cultural Day, help during the Ladies Bazaar and much more. We donate to St Vincent De Paul and AIDS Supper Club. We also promote spiritual growth and have socials, camping and movie nights to name a few. Discernment DinnerMarch 9 6:00 pmThe Office of Vocations is hosting a discernment dinner for high school age men the evening of Thursday, March 9, 2017 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Richardson. The evening will begin with Mass at 6:00 pm and continue with fellowship, dinner, and presentations and discussion regarding a vocation to the diocesan priesthood with priests and seminarians of our diocese. There will be a Come and See weekend at Holy Trinity Seminary for men 17+ years old on March 31-April 2, 2017. This is an opportunity for men who wish to discern their vocation more seriously by experiencing the daily life of a seminarian. They will experience the seminary’s routine of prayer, classes, meals and brotherhood with other men seeking after the Lord’s will in their life.
