Overview

What is Cloud computing?

Private Cloud Cloud Computing with

company resources

On-demand delivery of applications as standardized IT services

Public Cloud Cloud Computing with

globally shared resources

Elastic Dynamic Self-Service

Page 9: Support you Microsoft cloud with Microsoft services By Anis Chebbi)

What is a Private Cloud?

Operating System

Virtualization

A Private Cloud presents the OS

and virtualization resources as a

pool of shared resource

The resource pool is created

through management, based on

business rules and executed

through automation.

Management

You no longer think about

numbers of VMs, server ratios,

memory or storage but instead

on how much compute resources

you have access to

Your focus now shifts to the

applications, where you rely on

the pool of resources to supply

the right capacity and capabilities

Page 10: Support you Microsoft cloud with Microsoft services By Anis Chebbi)

Benefits of a Private Cloud

Beyond Large-Scale Virtualization

Operating System

Virtualization

Management The Applications can be turned

on, off, moved & scaled

Elasticity

The Applications use as much or

as little of the resource pool as

needed

Dynamic The Applications can be

provisioned by end-users based

on business requirements

Self-service

The ability to scale is now based on the

application’s needs, not limited by the underlying

resources;

Server, VM, or even the datacenter

Virtual Machines make up more than 55% of our total Windows Server

population in MSIT, as of today

About 1600 physical servers of differing configurations host about

7000 Virtual Machines

Highest VM concentrations are in enterprise datacenters

Page 26: Support you Microsoft cloud with Microsoft services By Anis Chebbi)

What Is Microsoft Server Virtualization?

Virtualization enables a single physical server to host multiple "guest servers",

while each guest server perceives itself to be a fully distinct and independent

server

Each virtual machine has their own representation of hardware, an isolated OS and

application environment, and a unique network and security identity

How Does MSIT Implement Hyper-V?

35 2/8/2012

The preferred infrastructure platform is the

MSIT “Scale Unit”

Hyper-V R2 deployments on the Scale

Unit utilize 16 node clusters to

minimize sunk capacity and maximize

flexibility

All server consolidation hosts run Windows

Server 2008 Enterprise Server Core, with R2

the current standard

All virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) hosts

run Hyper-V Server R2

Virtual machine configurations and

resource allocations are very similar to

those of the same workload on a physical

machine

How Does MSIT Operate Hyper-V?

All virtualization hosts are managed centrally, by a full compliment of

tools that are appropriate for the environment and platform

System Center Configuration Manager, Operations Manager, and Virtual Machine

Manager agents are deployed and provide central administration

Hardware support agents, antivirus, and other tools provide additional functions

What did MSIT learn from its experience with

Virtualization?

Always strive to “virtualize appropriately”

Apply best practices for optimizing performance

Provision and manage VMs similarly to physical

machines

Ensure you maintain capacity slightly ahead of the

demand

Simplify and standardize the host computer and

virtual machine configuration, as much as possible

Conclusions

Machine virtualization continues to increase Microsoft IT’s

operational efficiency in the server space

Use of virtualization has reduced MSIT’s space and power

consumption significantly

Proper use of virtualization has allowed Microsoft to avoid millions

of dollars of capital spend

MSIT has been able to pass-along cost savings

Machine virtualization and complimentary technologies are critical

parts of MSIT’s business strategies and meeting their priorities
