Connolly Middle School’s mission is to prepare students for college and success in a global society through rigorous coursework and critical thinking. Connolly Middle School is

recognized as an Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) National Certifi ed School and is proud to be 1 of 118 AVID National Demonstration School Sites. Research vali-dates that the AVID college-readiness system works for all students.

AVID’s proven methodologies implemented throughout each subject increase rigor and pro-mote academic achievement for general, gift ed, and special education students. It is driven by the WICR (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Reading) method, Costa’s Levels of Questioning, Cornell notes, Socratic seminars, and philosophical chairs.

Honors and Advanced Placement classes are available in Language Arts, Geometry, Algebra, Science, and Social Studies. Connolly is pleased to announce the implementation of the Connolly Gift ed Academy for eighth-grade gift ed students. To be eligible for the Connolly Gift ed Academy, students must score in the 95th percentile or higher on the honors/gift ed placement exam. Th e curriculum is designed in collaboration with McClintock High School’s Payne Academy. We plan to expand this program to all grades in the future.

Connolly strives to provide levels of acceleration and challenge in all sections of required courses, as well as elective programs and music. Th e fi ne arts music program at Connolly off ers outstanding opportunities to expose middle school-age students to symphony orchestra, jazz band, and a variety of typical vocal and instrumental performance classes.

Connolly Middle School off ers a college-going culture that is evident throughout the campus where students are encouraged to take rigorous coursework and are held accountable to the highest standards.

Fees College Preparatory Middle School’s mission is to develop a college-bound mindset in each student by having conversations about college in every classroom every day. To

prepare students for college, we aspire to maintain and support the following:

• A comprehensive and school-wide organization and note-taking system • Weekly academic goal-setting focused on improvement and refl ection• Research-based vocabulary instruction that prepares students for greater aca-

demic rigor • An expectation that students will do their work, failure is not an option, and

the requirement that students do their very best work at all times

Preparation for high school and college includes a strong emphasis on reading and writing skills in a focused, organized and orderly learning environment. Each of the past three years we have seen our academic achievement increase, particularly in the critical area of literacy. Fees instills a “failure is not an option” mindset in which students are continually encouraged to strive for excellence.

Fees Preparatory also off ers a comprehensive honors program for the most ambitious stu-dents. Students participating in at least one honors class will be invited to apply to the Fees Honors Team, an extracurricular opportunity. If accepted into the program, students commit to taking one fi ne arts elective every year, maintain at least a B average in all of their classes, attend monthly workshops designed to enhance and further their learning, and participate in quarterly fi eld trips during the school day. In addition, Honors Team students are placed in mentoring relationships with honors faculty members throughout the school year.

Gililland Middle School“T.E.A.M. - Together Everyone Achieves More”

Gililland Middle School’s mission is to create opportunities for students to be successful through high expectations for academics and behavior. By ensuring that our programs

are well planned and aligned to state standards, we provide students with knowledge, under-standing, and skills needed for further success. Teachers, parents, administrators, and sup-port staff work together to create a challenging environment, in which students can make a successful transition from middle school to the demands of high school and beyond. Gililland Middle School is dedicated to meeting individual student needs as evidenced by improved academic achievement, vast technological resources, and a variety of elective opportunities.

Technology integration in the classroom is a core feature at Gililland Middle School. Th rough a 21st Century Grant, Gililland received a 1:1 ratio of computers to students in all Language Arts classrooms. Every classroom in Gililland is equipped with technology. Every day, stu-dents have access to laptops, SMART Boards, document cameras, and student response clickers that support our rigorous curriculum.

Elective courses are essential components of Gililland Middle School. Our Service Learning course is unique in the Tempe Elementary School District, and focuses on conservation, envi-ronmental sustainability, and the idea of “Going Green.”

Gililland Middle School has a tradition of earning top awards at state competitions. Phoenix Magazine recognized the Band and Orchestra programs as “Tops in the Valley.” Th ere are also plenty of opportunities for students aft er the school day with a variety of clubs such as MESAclub, No Excuses Academy, Technology Club, Tempe Athletic Conference Athletics, and more!

Tempe Elementary School District provides exceptional learning opportunities for gift ed students. At the middle school level, gift ed students are served through honors and advanced courses in the core areas of lan-guage arts, math, science, and social studies.

Placement in honors and advanced classes is determined by established criteria such as gift ed identifi cation, high achievement scores, and teacher evaluation of performance.

Students who take honors math courses at the middle school level are eligible to earn math credit at any high school in the Tempe Union High School District. Additional criteria may apply.

6th Grade Core CoursesListed below are the course off erings for 6th grade students in the Tempe Elementary School District. Middle School students participate in four core classes: Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies. In addition, non-core electives are also available at each site.

Language Arts

Language ArtsTh is course emphasizes reading, writing, and lan-guage skills in an integrated block format for a full school year. In this standards-based curriculum, students will learn to apply reading comprehension strategies and build new vocabulary through diff erent genres of literature, including both fi ction and nonfi c-tion. Students will practice a variety of writing appli-cations by concentrating on the writing process and using the 6 Traits to continually enhance their work. Th e instructional block also focuses on improving language abilities: grammar, usage, mechanics, and oral presentation skills. Teachers practice diff eren-tiating instruction to ensure the learning of all stu-dents in an engaging and rigorous environment.

Language Arts* HONORS In addition to grade level expectations, this course will incorporate higher academic rigor through pacing, depth, and complexity. Students will recognize and explore universal themes occurring in literature through higher-level thinking and inquiry. Th e blocked honors language arts course challenges students to critically examine topics through communication, writing, language, and literary analysis. Students will be provided an accelerated and enriched curriculum that includes creative activities and projects.

English Language Development*

English Writing & Grammar*Th is course is designed to provide students instruc-tion in aspects of English writing. Students in this course receive instruction in grammar, spelling, sen-tence expansion and writing forms (paragraphs, essay descriptive, narrative, and fi rst person). Students will practice a variety of writing applications by concen-trating on the writing process and using the 6 Traits to continually enhance their work.

English Reading*Th is is an English reading course for students whose fi rst language is not English. Students will extend pro-fi ciency of reading skills in four areas: word analysis, fl uency and vocabulary, comprehension, and literary analysis and response. Students receive instruction to expand development of sight word vocabulary, and improve reading fl uency and decoding skills. Students will continue to use reading instructional materials at their language level to further their development in content areas and narrative text.

Structured English Immersion (SEI)Language Arts (Reading & Writing)*Th is is an intermediate English reading course for students whose fi rst language is not English. Th e course goal is to develop the student’s English pro-fi ciency by utilizing the English Language Arts Standards. Students will extend their profi ciency of reading skills in numerous areas: phonics, word anal-ysis, fl uency and vocabulary, comprehension, and lit-erary analysis and response. Students will continue to use reading instructional materials at their language level to further their development in content areas and narrative text.

English Grammar*Th is is a grammar course for students whose fi rst lan-guage is not English. Th e course introduces students to the foundation of English language, grammar, and structure. Students will study basic syntactic elements of English (nouns, verbs, modifi ers, etc.) along with phonetic and semantic aspects of language. Word construction is also taught as well as how to produce the four kinds of sentences in English (declarative, imperative, interrogative and exclamatory). Students are expected to study and be able to identify all eight parts of speech.

Math

6th Grade MathTh is course introduces students to the concepts as identifi ed in the Arizona State Standards that include: number sense, numerical operations (i.e., fractions, decimals and two step equations), statistics, prob-ability, discrete math, geometric properties, problem solving strategies and basic algebra concepts. Th is course is designed to prepare students for 7th Grade Math.

6th Grade Advanced Math*Th is course teaches above grade level skills as iden-tifi ed in the Arizona State Standards that include: number sense, numerical operations (i.e., operations using integers, multi-step equations), statistics, prob-ability, discrete math, geometric properties, problem solving strategies and basic algebra concepts. Th is course is designed to prepare students for pre-algebra.

6th Grade Pre-Algebra* HONORSTh is course introduces students to solving linear equations with one variable, absolute value, integers, exponents, rational numbers, problem solving strat-egies, solving inequalities, ratios and proportions, percents, statistics, basic geometry concepts and graphing. Th is course is designed to prepare students for Algebra.

Science

ScienceTh is course teaches Life Science, Physical Science and Earth Science. Th e inquiry process, history and nature of science, and science in personal and social perspectives is applied to all units as students will cover relationships between structures and func-tions of plants and animals in their environment, how energy can be generated, stored, and transferred, and the description of composition and interactions of the Earth, its atmosphere, and the Earth’s systems. Health units include understanding relationships and human reproduction, disease prevention, drug pre-vention, personal protection strategies, and nutrition.

Science* HONORSTh is course includes the same curriculum as 6th grade science but off ers more in-depth exploration of chal-lenging activities that involve higher-level thinking skills and communication skills, real-life application, and more complex lab experiences.

Social Studies

Social StudiesTh e fi ve social studies disciplines of American History, World History, Civics/Government, Geography, and Economics form the foundation for understanding the human experience and developing related knowl-edge and skills for all Tempe Elementary School District students. Th e strands at this level empha-size World History from its earliest cultures through Enlightenment, including the early cultures of the Americas.

Social Studies* HONORSHonors social studies courses are designed to address the fi ve disciplines of American History, World History, Civics/Government, Geography, and Economics in more depth and complexity, and at an accelerated pace. Because the course is designed for high-ability learners, there is a strong emphasis on higher-level thinking skills and concept devel-opment. In addition, opportunities for independent research exist.

*Enrollment in this course is based on placement criteria.

Computer Technology9-week courseTh is introductory course will focus on the funda-mentals of computer use. Keyboarding skills will be taught. In addition, computer ethics, copyright, fair use topics and Internet safety will be explored.

Family and Consumer Science (Connolly and Fees)9-week courseTh is course is an interdisciplinary study that applies academic learning to everyday life. Students will work individually and in small groups to learn about food and nutrition, sewing, and life skills.

Physical Education9-week, Semester Middle school physical education classes provide learning experiences that meet students’ developmental needs. Th is assists in improving mental alertness, aca-demic performance, a readiness and enthusiasm for learning along with the knowledge, skills and con-fi dence to enjoy a lifetime of health related physical activity. Students participate in a wide variety of activi-ties that develop a balance of skills, concepts, game activities, rhythms and dance experiences designed to enhance the cognitive, motor, aff ective and physical development of every student. Language Arts

Language ArtsTh is course continues to build higher levels of reading, writing, and language skills in an integrated block format for a full school year. In this standards-based curriculum, students will apply reading comprehen-sion strategies and build new vocabulary through dif-ferent genres of literature, including both fi ction and nonfi ction. Students will extend their writing skills through a variety of writing applications by concen-trating on the writing process and using the 6 Traits to continually enhance their work. Th e instructional block also focuses on expanding language abilities: grammar, usage, mechanics, and oral presentation skills. Teachers practice diff erentiating instruction to ensure the learning of all students in an engaging and rigorous environment.

Language Arts* HONORS In addition to grade level expectations, this course will incorporate higher academic rigor through pacing, depth, and complexity. Students will recog-nize and explore universal themes occurring in lit-erature through higher-level thinking and inquiry. Th e blocked honors language arts course challenges students to critically examine topics through com-munication, writing, language, and literary analysis. Students will be provided an accelerated and enriched curriculum that includes creative activities and projects.

English Language Development*

English Writing & Grammar*Th is course is designed to provide students instruc-tion in aspects of English writing. Students in this course receive instruction in grammar, spelling, sen-tence expansion and writing forms (paragraphs, essay descriptive, narrative, and fi rst person). Students will practice a variety of writing applications by concen-

trating on the writing process and using the 6 Traits to continually enhance their work.

English Reading*Th is is an English reading course for students whose fi rst language is not English. Students will extend pro-fi ciency of reading skills in four areas: word analysis, fl uency and vocabulary, comprehension, and literary analysis and response. Students receive instruction to expand development of sight word vocabulary, and improve reading fl uency and decoding skills. Students will continue to use reading instructional materials at their language level to further their development in content areas and narrative text.

Structured English Immersion (SEI)Language Arts (Reading & Writing)*Th is is an English reading course for students whose fi rst language is not English. Th e course goal is to develop the student’s English profi ciency by utilizing the English Language Arts Standards. Students will extend their profi ciency of reading skills in numerous areas: phonics, word analysis, fl uency and vocabulary, comprehension, and literary analysis and response. Students will continue to use reading instructional materials at their language level to further their devel-opment in content areas and narrative text.

English Grammar*Th is is a grammar course for students whose fi rst lan-guage is not English. Th e course introduces students to the foundation of English language, grammar, and structure. Students will study basic syntactic elements of English (nouns, verbs, modifi ers, etc.) along with phonetic and semantic aspects of language. Word construction is also taught as well as how to produce the four kinds of sentences in English (declarative, imperative, interrogative and exclamatory). Students are expected to study and be able to identify all eight parts of speech.

7th Grade MathTh is course introduces students to the concepts as identifi ed in the Arizona State Standards that include: number sense, numerical operations (i.e., operations using integers, multi-step equations), statistics, prob-ability, discrete math, geometric properties, problem solving strategies and basic algebra concepts. Th is course is designed to prepare students for Pre-Algebra.

7th Grade Advanced Pre-Algebra*Th e course introduces students to solving linear equations with one variable, absolute value, integers, exponents, rational numbers, problem solving strat-egies, solving inequalities, ratios and proportions, percents, statistics, basic geometry concepts and graphing. Th is course is designed to prepare students for Algebra.

7th Grade Algebra* HONORSTh e course introduces students to the basic struc-ture of Algebra through the use and application of real numbers, inequalities, factoring, polynomials, linear and quadratic equations, and graphs. Th is course is designed to prepare students to take Honors Geometry as described in the Articulation Agreement with Tempe Union High School District.

Science

ScienceTh is course teaches Life Science and Earth Science. Th e inquiry process, history and nature of science, and science in personal and social perspectives is applied to all units as students will analyze the rela-tionships of various organisms and their environ-ments, describe the composition and interactions between the structure of the Earth and its atmo-sphere, understand the processes acting on Earth and their interactions with Earth systems, and the rela-tionships of the Earth and other objects in the solar system. Health units include understanding human reproduction, disease prevention, personal protection strategies, and developing decision-making skills.

Science* HONORSTh is course includes the same curriculum as 7th grade science but off ers more in-depth exploration of chal-lenging activities that involve higher-level thinking skills and communication skills, real-life application, and more complex lab experiences.

Social Studies

Social StudiesTh e fi ve social studies disciplines of American History, World History, Civics/Government, Geography and Economics form the foundation for understanding the human experience and developing related knowl-edge and skills for all Tempe Elementary School District students. Th e strands at this level emphasize American history from the Civil War through the Great Depression. In addition, students study the impact of the Industrial Revolution and imperialism on world events.

Social Studies* HONORSHonors social studies courses are designed to address the fi ve disciplines of American History, World History, Civics/Government, Geography, and Economics in more depth and complexity, and at an accelerated pace. Because the course is designed for high-ability learners, there is a strong emphasis on higher-level thinking skills and concept devel-opment. Language ArtsTh is course advances reading, writing, and language skills in an integrated block format for a full school year. In this standards-based curriculum, students will apply reading comprehension strategies and build new vocabulary through diff erent genres of litera-ture, including both fi ction and nonfi ction. Students will increase their writing skills through a variety of more complex writing applications by concen-trating on the writing process and using the 6 Traits to continually enhance their work. Th e instructional block also focuses on extending language abilities: grammar, usage, mechanics, and oral presentation skills. Teachers practice diff erentiating instruction to ensure the learning of all students in an engaging and rigorous environment.

Language Arts* HONORS In addition to grade level expectations, this course will incorporate higher academic rigor through pacing, depth, and complexity. Students will recog-nize and explore universal themes occurring in lit-erature through higher-level thinking and inquiry. Th e blocked honors language arts course challenges students to critically examine topics through com-munication, writing, language, and literary anal-ysis. Students will be provided an accelerated and enriched curriculum that includes creative activities and projects.

English Language Development*

English Writing & Grammar*Th is course is designed to provide students instruc-tion in aspects of English writing. Students in this course receive instruction in grammar, spelling, sen-tence expansion and writing forms (paragraphs, essay descriptive, narrative, and fi rst person). Students will practice a variety of writing applications by concen-

English Grammar*Th is is a grammar course for students whose fi rst lan-guage is not English. Th e course introduces students to the foundation of English language, grammar, and structure. Students will study basic syntactic elements of English (nouns, verbs, modifi ers, etc.) along with phonetic and semantic aspects of language. Word construction is also taught as well as how to produce the four kinds of sentences in English (declarative, imperative, interrogative, and exclamatory). Students are expected to study and be able to identify all eight parts of speech.

8th Grade Pre-AlgebraTh e course introduces students to solving linear equa-tions in one variable, absolute value, integers, expo-nents, rational numbers, problem solving strategies, solving inequalities, ratios and proportions, percents, statistics, basic geometry concepts and graphing. Th is course is designed to prepare students for Algebra.

8th Grade Algebra Advanced Math*Th e course introduces the student to the basic struc-ture of Algebra through the use and application of real numbers, inequalities, factoring, polynomials, linear and quadratic equations, and graphs. Th is course is designed to prepare students to take Geometry or Honors Geometry as described in the Articulation Agreement with Tempe Union High School District.

8th Grade Geometry* HONORSTh is course introduces the student to the deduc-tive method of proof with the use of points, lines, and planes. Solid geometry is integrated with plane geometry to lead the student to consideration of two-and three-dimensional fi gures and to develop the ability to visualize space relationships. Th is course is designed to prepare students to take Algebra 3-4 or Honors Algebra 3-4 as described in the articulation agreement with Tempe Union High School District.

Science

ScienceTh is course teaches Life Science and Physical Science. Th e inquiry process, history and nature of science, and science in personal and social perspectives is applied to all units as students will understand phys-ical and chemical properties of matter, know the rela-tionship between force and motion, and explain the purposes of cell division and the basic principles of heredity and dominant and recessive traits. Health units include understanding the human reproductive system, disease prevention, and facing peer pressure.

Science HONORS*Th is course includes the same curriculum as 8th grade science but off ers more in-depth exploration of challenging activities that involve higher-level thinking skills and communication skills, real-life application, investigations of self-selected topics, and more complex lab experiences.

Social Studies

Social StudiesTh e fi ve social studies disciplines of American History, World History, Civics/Government, Geography and Economics form the foundation for understanding the human experience and developing related knowl-edge and skills for all Tempe Elementary School District students. Physical EducationSemester courseMiddle school physical education classes provide learning experiences that meet students’ developmental needs. Students with a current IEP with pull-out as a placement would enroll in this class.

Middle School Resource – InclusionLocations: All Middle SchoolsTh e Middle School Resource Program is a cross-cat-egorical program providing instruction for students with a special education eligibility which impacts the ability to learn. AthleticsTempe Middle School AthleticsTempe Middle Schools off er two diff erent programs for your child to participate in athletics. Th e Tempe Athletic Conference (TAC) and the All City Athletic Conference (ACAC) each provide a variety of opportuni-ties for student athletes of all skill levels.

Tempe Athletic Conference –TACTh e TAC believes that competition should be fun and a signifi cant part of a sound educational program. Students try out for all teams, promoting a level of athletic competition that demonstrates high standards of ethics and sportsmanship. We believe the highest potential of sports is achieved when participants are com-mitted to pursuing victory with honor according to the six core principles:

1. Trustworthiness 4. Fairness 2. Respect 5. Caring 3. Responsibility 6. Good Citizenship

Prior to trying out for a TAC sport, students must fi ll out an Athletic Participation card. In addition, a physical examination summary must be fi lled out and signed by a physician.

All City Athletic Conference – ACACTh e ACAC is a program of the City of Tempe Recreation Department, developed through a partnership with the Tempe Elementary School District.

Th e goal of the ACAC is to increase the number of athletic and competitive opportunities for the young student athletes of TD3 and the community. Th ere are no tryouts for these teams, and all games are played aft er school. Th e total time commitment for each athlete is approximately fi ve hours per week.

General Information and Frequently Asked Questions

Class Schedules

How do the middle school schedules work?All students in grades 6-8 take core classes to include Language Arts (Reading/Writing), Math, Social Studies, and Science. In addition, students will have opportunities to participate in electives. Students may take up to two electives daily. Electives include: vocal music, band, orchestra, physical education, Spanish, family and consumer science, art, and computers.

Factors in creating students’ schedules include not only student choice, but course availability as well as a student’s academic needs. Th erefore, school admin-istrators may place students into math and/or reading intervention classes in lieu of electives as needed.

When will my child and I know what his/her schedule is?Schedules will be available in early August. Parents will receive information in the mail regarding the details of schedule pick-up. Please contact the middle school if your address changes so information mailed to your home is deliverable.

Schedules will not be provided to students who are not current with immunizations.

Homework

How much homework should my child expect to bring home daily?Homework is an integral part of education and is used to reinforce skills learned in the classroom. Th e amount of homework given in middle school will increase from what your child brought home in elementary school. Homework is assigned four days

each week and ranges from 45 minutes minimum assigned to sixth-graders to 80 minutes maximum assigned to eighth-graders. In addition to home-work, middle school students are assigned a required amount of minutes to be spent reading each night.

Supplies

Which supplies will my child need on the fi rst day of school?Th e list of supplies varies according to your child’s teacher or team. Students should bring pens, pen-cils and paper for the fi rst day of school. Teachers will inform the students of all other needed supplies. Th ere are programs set up that allow for students to receive free school supplies if necessary. Many of the schools provide supplies to the students on a yearly basis.

Uniforms and IDs

Which middle schools have a uniform dress code?Connolly Middle School and Fees College Preparatory Middle School require a uniform. Please visit each school’s website to read a description of each uniform policy. Th e website addresses are listed on pages 2-4.

Is my child required to wear an ID badge?Students are responsible for keeping their school ID on them at all times. Having students wear ID badges helps facilitate campus safety. At some schools, these cards are also used as library cards and for lunch pay-ment. Students’ fi rst ID badge, lanyard and plastic case are supplied for free. If lost, students must replace their ID badge at a nominal charge.

Breakfast and Lunch

Can my child buy breakfast and lunch at school?Providing healthy meals is a top priority of the Tempe Elementary School District. Our dedicated staff pre-pares nutritional breakfasts and lunches at our schools every school day. We also provide nutritious snacks at several aft er-school programs. You can fi nd more information about school breakfasts and lunches including cost on the district website at www.tempe-schools.org/menus. You can also put money on your child’s account from home. Free and Reduced MealsMeals are also available free or at a reduced price. A child may be eligible for free or reduced-price meals if their household income falls within cer-tain limits. You can fi nd the Free and Reduced Meal Application form on the district website at www.tempeschools.org/NutritionalServices. Th e approval process may take up to 10 days; however we do make every eff ort to process your application as soon as possible.
