Professional Development Offerings

Rio Grande City CISD Office of Curriculum and Instruction is committed to making a difference in the quality of education and learning of all students through research-based professional development. The Time Equivalent Program (TEP) requires staff to acquire twelve (12) professional clock hours during the school year. This summer, RGCCISD staff will have many opportunities to attend staff development during the months of June, July and August to facilitate the completion of the TEP requirements. Sessions will be available across grade levels for language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies, as well as, other sessions pertaining to the need of all learners. Participants are required to complete 12 TEP hours as per the TEP guidelines. We invite you to examine the sessions being offered and encourage you to sign up for the sessions of your choice. See you this summer!

Sexual Harassment

This half-day training will provide awareness on sexual harassment. Participants will learn and apply the important skills of handling sexual harassment issues and complaints. This workshop thoroughly addresses the elements of how to prevent unacceptable behavior. The session includes a detailed overview of what sexual harassment is, explains legal definitions, discusses prevention, and shows how to handle complaints and how to maintain a positive work environment.

Unlocking the Secrets

This workshop will introduce development of abstract cognitive processes and connections through the design and implementation of a concept-based curriculum, with instruction reflective of the use of conceptual lenses. This is a Level II workshop under TAGT category of Curriculum and Instruction and satisfies the mandatory annual update for teachers of gifted and talented learners.

Establishing Pathways for Effective Instruction

Teaching facts, principles, concepts and skills all require specific modes of instruction. This workshop will focus on “how” to effectively teach concepts, principles, and facts, by teaching formulaic construction of concise and complete learning objectives (developed by Dr. Sandra Kaplan) and segueing into the 5E Constructivist Model of Instruction for lesson planning and flexibility.

ELAR TEKS in Genre-Specific TEKS for the STAAR

Teachers will review the new and revised ELAR TEKS and will be provided with TEKS aligned activities for use with the reading adoption. ELAR standards for literary genres will include: Figure 19, vocabulary, theme and genre, character, plot, sensory details, and STAAR reading shield.

2016 State Accountability

The summary of Commissioner of Education final decisions regarding 2016 State Accountability was released informing districts and campuses of the key changes to the performance index framework for the 2016 State Accountability Rating System. The details of the changes to the indicators, measures and methodologies are critical for district and campus leadership to understand, interpret and articulate to all district stakeholders. A detailed description of the measures and methodologies that impact 2016 state accountability requirements will be provided. Participants are encouraged to bring 2016 campus summary data to review and analyze the impact of the data on state accountability ratings.

Hands-On Special Needs Training

The participants will know and understand his/her custodial responsibility in the safe transport of a child with special needs and mandate to follow the IEP and confidentiality of information. The participant will also know the physical and training requirements of the Driver Team when it comes to the use of various mobility aids like restraining harnesses, procedures to properly tie down a wheelchair, properly use the school bus lift (automatic/manual), how to conduct an emergency evacuation, the proper use of seat belt cutters, fire blankets and transfer boards.
