A MESSAGE FROM YOUR EXALTED RULER BOBBI SAVAUSK The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the United States of America THE ELKS HORN Edgewater - New Smyrna Beach Elks Lodge #1557 820 West Park Avenue, Edgewater, FL 32132 ELKS LADIES Shirleen Donald, President Thank you, Elks Ladies for electing me as your 2016-2017 president. Congratulations to the following ladies on their appointments: Jane Crocker, VP, Marge Cyr, Treasurer, and Hedy Lohr, our new Correspondence Secretary. We have a vacancy for Secretary. If you are interested in this position, please contact me. I will chair the Ways and Means. We will continue to meet the first Thursday of every month. As we enter 2016-2017, your suggestions for fundraisers, are always welcomed. Hope everyone had a wonderful Easter celebration with your families Our next meeting will be on Thursday, April 7th at 11:30 am. Please come out and support the Elks Ladies. Members All, April is here, and so is the new Elk year….and a new Exalted Ruler. I’m proud that you have chosen me to lead the membership this year, and I will do my very best, not to disappoint you. I’m looking forward to a very successful year…to increase our membership, and to increase our financial situation. In order do that, we will have to pull on every resource we can, to think of ways to earn money for the lodge. Our summer months are our slow time, but the bills still come in; so in order for us to survive, to do our charitable work, which is what we are all about, and why I joined, we have to really get busy. Our Officer Training Seminar in Orlando was attended by Mary Ann Bucci, Secretary Elect, David Reichenberg, three year Trustee, Rick Phelps, PER, Treasurer Elect, and myself. We each learned a lot about our new positions…it was very informative For those that didn’t attend, there will be more opportunities. One of the things, I want to see happen to our lodge, is for it to go back to being the happy place it was when I first joined. We all need to put our happy faces on and hope it becomes contagious to those around us. Life is too short and every minute we spend being miserable, shortens it even more. It may sound like a clique, but our organization is built on brotherly love, loyalty, and fidelity… please think about it. SECRETARY’S MESSAGE

Lodge email address:[email protected] Office Phone: (386) 427-2512 Office Hours: 9 am–2 pm M-T-W-Th

I would like to take this opportunity to thank our outgoing Lodge Secretary, Lorraine Cevasco for her support in helping me become acquainted with the duties of this office. Loraine will continue as my office assistant. Please take note of the new Secretary hours and days I will be available. These hours will be posted on the office door. At our March 16th lodge meeting, we initiated and welcomed Ken Morris, Harry Dow, Cynthia Halcrow, Branden Smith, Joseph Landerville and Eiizabeth Landerville. We received an application for new membership from Shane Voss, proposed by John Buchanan and Bill Summa, proposed by Marci Skates. Balloting on these new applicants will be Wednesday, April 6th; orientation on Wednesday, April 13th and initiation on Wednesday, April 20th. We still have some members who have not paid their 2016-2017 dues; a list of names is posted in the lounge. If you know anyone on the list, please contact them and remind them they have not paid their current dues. If you haven’t been receiving our email blasts or the electronic Horn, several things could prevent you from getting them: your email address is incorrect, items are going to your spam or junk mail folders, or your inbox is full. If your email address has changed, please notify the office. Just a reminder, campership applications, to send a child to camp, this summer, are available in the office or you can go online at: http://floridaelks.org/enriching-the-lives-of-children; once there, click on “camper application.” This is all on the Florida State website. I look forward to working with our new Exalted Ruler, her staff and officers, and most of all, you, the members. May our lodge continue to prosper financially and in membership growth. Mary Ann J. Bucci Lodge Secretary

APRIL BIRTHDAYS

Our special needs kids came to the lodge for a very special occasion—to help celebrate the 21st birthday of Heather, with her friends McGinnis, Lynn, Brittany Walker, Brittany Bolli, Amanda Hershberger. Kim Hershberger, Beth Outlaw,

Career Experience, Vocational Skills Training. FAPE Program. This is the group of young people from New Smyrna Beach High School that help in the dining room. Beth Outlaw, their teacher, is an Elk, and we have sort of adopted the group.

TUESDAY—BAR BINGO

Come for lunch … play fun

bingo. Games start at 1:00 pm

in the Social Quarters, with Rick

"Chicken Legs" Phelps, PER

calling. The cost is a minimum

of $11, certainly an inexpensive

afternoon of fun. For only $1 more you can buy a

"Hot Ball" ticket for the chance of BIG money!

Recently, Dottie Rowe and Shirley Wiefling split

the accumulated pot of $1,72! Nice haul for a

dollar, right? So, come, have lunch, have some

fun, and maybe, win some money.

Spring Easter Eggs for Harry-Anna.

Marci Skates, wife of Larry Skates,

DDGER, started a campaign to raise

funds to support the Florida Elks

Youth Camp and the Children's

Therapy Services; it turned out to be

highly successful. The many Elks

and friends who bought golden

eggs for $10 and smaller multi-colored eggs for $5 and even tiny

eggs for $1 were able to raise a grand total of $430. The children

who will go to camp. thank you, and the children who receive free

therapy. thank you….AND I THANK EVERYONE who participated. I

could not have done it without all of you!!!

Outing to Orlando to see a

Magic game. To honor

those who served in our

military in the Korean War,

Bob Pomfret and Russell

Smith, both Korean War

veterans and members of

the lodge, were chosen to

go to a Magic game in

Orlando. Bob and Russell

were a part of a group of twenty-five veterans; that were chosen to go.

While at the game, they got to sit in Pat Williams’ sky box with former

Magic player, Nick Anderson, who stopped by for a photo opportunity.

Needless to say, the men were thrilled. Also present, were Mike Phillips,

PSP, PGESQ and Jim Hurst, PSP. Bob has been a member of the lodge for

28 years; he enlisted in the US Air Force in 1951 with an honorable dis-

charge in 1955 as Staff Sargent; he also served at US Air Base k13 Suwon

Korea with the 319th Fighter Interceptor Squadron as an aircraft armament

technician.

Caps of Love

As Elks, we thrive on helping others! Here is an opportunity to help special-needs children

receive medical equipment (like wheelchairs) by simply saving your water, milk jug and soda

bottle plastic caps and bringing them to the Edgewater/New Smyrna Beach lodge 1557.

Dave Reichenberg, one of our trustees, will gather them together and get them to the collection

site in Orlando, Florida. To read more about this charity, check out www.CapsOfLove.com.

THANK YOU

Co-Chair Rick Orr and I would like to extend our thanks to everyone who

participated in this year’s CASH BASH, it was a great success. We had a gross

receipt of approximately $11,975.00 out of which we requested (on the floor)

$5,254.00 be set aside for improvements to the banquet hall and the member’s

lounge. Again, this could not have been achieved without your participation.

Looking toward the future we expect to surpass this next year. If anyone has

any suggestions as to how we could better improve this Charity Fund Raiser

you can respond in confidence to [email protected]. Again thank you for

your support.
